Old Ironsides

Commodore John Paul Jones

Commodore in the Continental Navy
Storm Modder
I am pleased to reveal to the board my debut ship building project! I have begun construction on a 44 gun heavy frigate yesterday, following the lines of the design drafted by Joshua Humphreys in 1794 for the "Original Six" frigates of the United States Navy. I have done my best to keep the model as low-poly as possible with the utmost accuracy and precision.

<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/USS_Constitution_Larboard.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/USS_Constitution_Top.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/USS_Constitution_Bow.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/USS_Constitution_Stern.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I still have to do the following:
Install fore, main, and mizzen channels.
Install rungs down side of hull for entry port.
Install all pinrails, shot and flag lockers, and skylights.
Install spardeck armament (still cannot decide between carronades or long guns).
Install anchor.
Install gratings and ship's wheel.

Once I have finished these tasks I will copy everything and mirror it, thus completing both halves of the hull instantly. After this I will probably model the masts and yards, though that may depend on whether the masts (and rigging) are actually modeled or added via the Inez's Tool.

Once I'm finished I can export the model as a .3DS and upload it to the FTP for download... I'll need someone who knows how to add the sails and rigging and someone who can "paint" her.

Looks pretty good! I hope someone will be able to help you get her ingame. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

i've done quite a bit of sketchup work myself, so i must say that that does indeed look good. but how did you get all those extra tools? i've only managed to extend it to the advanced tool set.

All these tools came with the program. I installed it just before Christmas and have updated it once since then... perhaps I have a different version? I don't know.

Ahoy again lads! I've progressed a good bit since my last update and am pleased to say that all I have to do now is add the deck furniture before my hull is completed. I even cut out my old guns and replaced them with better ones, actually including a gun deck that you can see from the waist and through the gunports! I also added the anchors and carronades, which look pretty cool to me! I included two colored versions to help you all imagine what it should look like when skinned, though of course that will be a lot better and include textures.

Excellent Commodore.
Are you making a detailed cabin interior for it ?

damski.

Possibly. I'll have to finish the hull first and look at the poly-count. It would be fun to make one! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />) And I do have interior blueprints, so it will be exactly like the real <i>Constitution's</i> great cabin.

Pretty! Since you're making the Constitution, you might want to install the demo of <a href="http://ww.avsim.com/vs" target="_blank">Virtual Sailor</a> and add Alan Winter's <a href="http://millenniumdock.bravepages.com/VS-Add-Ons/USS-Constitution.exe" target="_blank">USS Constitution</a> to it so that you can see how somebody else modeled her.

i admire your persistence in making it, as i know how much work it is. looking very critically at it, i noticed two things:

1: there seems to be a dent in the hull near the bow which runs along the entire width.

2: the very front part of the bow (the hull, not the keel) seems a little too flat. maybe the poly's at the front should be split into two sections?

i am still making the steam engine of my airship in sketchup. the engine alone is as much work as the rest of the ship, but it looks amazing. have you thought of hiding the lines of the poly's to improve the look? also, you might have noticed that you sometimes get a white line along a place where a poly touches another while the rest is coloured. this is because it goes through the other poly a little. solve this by painting the inside as well.

That's why I left the lines there, because of those little white lines. Thanks for the tip!

And I did notice that little dent at the bow... there's another one exactly like it at about the same disance from the stern, so I don't know what caused it. I hope that the ship's skin and the fact that its underwater will hide it ingame.

The bow may look a little flat, but I have it at a pretty good angle and its pretty much impossible to tell unless you look at it head-on without textures. I actually did split it in two, which is why the triangles alternate directions, and you could see the split if I removed the keel and head of the bow.

Are there photos of this <i>Constitution</i> model that Mr. Winter built? Just wondering... the demo may take up too much space on my PC (I'm really running low. :p)

The demo isn't that big, I think. It's not going to be bigger than 50 MB, I think. If you really want to, I could see about making some screenshots myself. But I do recommend having a look yourself instead. A picture says more than a thousand words, but a model says more than a thousand pictures. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

i think you'll only notice the dent when the lighting is at a specific angle. i think it was caused by clicking in the wrong spot while setting the main line for the hull. sometimes there's this little millimeter of distance between two points and the program selects the wrong one. this gets fixed when you zoom in and select the right one. this can also be the reason why some faces don't close. the balloon of my airship has a bit of a wierd issue there where two faces refused to close while all the others where fine. a cross-line fixed it. i started on one of the main driveshaft conical cogwheels. i'm not sure if i'll make teeth on it. that's going to be hell.

hmm. this is odd. i would have sworn i had a load of pics of the airship. they seem to have dissapeared. meh. they where outdated anyway.

Update! I hope you all enjoy the pics! Now I have to finish the masts and yards.

Hi Commodore,
It's certainly coming togeather now. Turning out to be a real masterpiece Sir. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
damski.

WOW! VERY impressive! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
Is it just me or is there something weird with the mast seen on the 6th picture?
I really hope somebody will help you getting her ingame. This is too good not to have. However, I expect she'll cause quite a frame-rate hit, seeing that you modeled her deck as well... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

seems like you got it nailed allright. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> i can't quite see it on the pic, but are those fighting tops round? are you sure that they're not supposed to be half-round? that's how i know them on the 19th century ships. are you going to model the ropes too? i did that on my airship by simply pulling a few lines.

If the ship is to be used ingame, I don't recommend to model ropes, since they're supposed to be generated by the program based on the rope locators.

ture, but it's easier to do it in sketchup first to have the positions on hand and so others can correct them before the locators are placed. i don't think single lines would show up in the game anyway.

Yes, those screenshots look weird... don't worry, the masts are fine in the model.

And I hope the framerate for this beauty is about the same as Inzane's <i>Surprise</i>, as I modeled about the same level of detail. The gun deck is pretty simple, I didn't even give it a thickness, its just a plane with textures on it for the guns to rest on. And if its necessary, I can delete the guns and carronades so low-poly stock game armaments can be added. And if things still look high-poly, I can give the model a shakedown and try to get her to a comfortable poly-count.

And those fighting tops are half round, they look better up close, so I'll be sure to take pics of them when I model some more of the masts.

And I think I'll draw lines where rigging should go, they can be deleted when the locators are added. But I might actually model some of the standing rigging to allow for more running rigging ingame. I'll also draw planes to show where sails should go, I'll even create two groups so I can hide one to show battle sail.

What would you say to two versions of this model... one with a standard sail plan and one with studding sail booms run out? This could be our first ship to use studding sails!
