Finding originals of Dutch ships is rather hard compared to the English & French. This drawing is of a Dutch 1st rate from 1691.

It doesn´t look that big, for a 1st rate, and counting the gun ports only gives a nuber of about 40 cannons. I´ve seen pictures of bigger Dutch ships, from the pictures of the Anglo-Dutch wars.

True it is a bit small, i only counted around 30 guns then, but I thought the Dutch didnt make the huge MOW type ships

Becouse the dutch never build the ships from drawings, but they used long.. very long lists with numbres.
I dont know why <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> , but they did. pretty amazing how we did that those days. i'll stop by at a specialist about it soon and ask him.

The numerical lists represent board and seam lengths, as well as corresponding areas of attachment along the keel. Using these numbers, the Dutch can recreate exact patterns, or alter the patterns with minor adjustments as improvements were discovered. It is the art of mathmetics and engineering.

Unfortunately, it leaves those enthusiasts like us with very few maps to hang up at home. Lists of numbers are less decorative.

Sigh. I want more drawings.
