Overgunned ships?

Should be tuned down the number of cannons and their calibers?

Anybody feels as me that the ship are a little bit overgunned?

I mean, a corvette with 32 guns it's too much... and with 24 pdr!!!?

Only superfrigates (old two-deckers removed one of them, or frigates built when originally was expected a two decker - as USS Constitution) and SOLs had 24 pdrs.

32 pdrs were reserved for the lower decks of 74's, 2nd rates and 1rst rates.

In Napoleonic period, a good frigate was expected to have round 38 18 pdrs guns, or even just 12 pdrs.

And what about a Xebec with 18 pdrs?!


Just my opinion.
 
I can live with the number of guns on existing ships, after all there's a whole lotta work to change that, however, I definitely agree that the max calibre for most ships should be reduced to realistic levels.

If there is a strong majority in support of this then I think we should get a consensus of what would be realistic for each ship type.

almost all of the ships are overgunned, but it is fun to se all those guns poking out of the side of your ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />
but there are a few undegunned ships as well [ the battleship should be 74, not 70] but as jack davidson said, it would be very difficult to change.
the only ship with the right amount of guns is the Man of War, but they are too close together and i think they should be spread out a bit [the equivelent of 3-5 metres of exposed hull without guns is a bit much! especially considering that the guns on the ship are 1-2 metres apart where they are present!]
also if we find an easy way to add guns to the hull, then we should make ships of the line with different amounts of guns, like the H.M.S Caledonia, which had 120 guns, and the absulutely enormous U.S.S Pennsylvania, which had 140 guns!]
 
Adding/removing guns from ships is harder than just changing a value in ships_init.c. You have to add/remove the gun locators from the ships. And if the skins are made for a certain number of guns, you need to change that as well. That is a lot of work and I don't think it's worth the effort. There are more important things that could be done. As far as I'm concerned anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
 
I don't know... I get used to those settings - but it's probably true. However I agree with Pieter - those changes would require a lot of work and in my opinion isn't worth of effort.

I think the max caliber for War Tartane should be lowered - it's only a boat but 9lbs guns are too heavy, I think.

Not sure it's necessary to remove the number of guns on the ships already in the game, but certainly the max calibers should be ammended to be more realistic. At present the number of ships with huge 24 and 32lb guns makes it impossible to play in a more 'piratey' vessel with small 4, 6 or 9lb guns. However wouldn't it be necessary to reduce the fort guns so they can still be damaged in assaults?
