Pirates in Outer Space?

DirtyDog

Landlubber
Spent enough time on the high seas? Now be a pirate in outer space with `X-2` The Threat. Just released in North America and coming to Europe in Feb. A slow paced space sim with some really beautiful graphics and `open-ended` game play. Hunt pirates or be one or be a trader or just follow the missions. A very good game so far.

sorry mate, prob better off in the alt games area
and yeah sounds like freelancer ( what a dissapointment that was )

I own X: Beyond the Frontier, and `X-Tension`.

Whereas I loved both of these - the one thing that pissed me off was the fact you NEVER left your ship. Great gameplay, and love it that much. But for quests, and missions, and things you would think would also generate OUT of the cockpit, was not something implemented. It's all space combat and trading.

From the screenshots of X2, I believe it's the same thing, no?

Oh well, will wind up buying it anyway...

Yes it's the next in the X series with updated grahpics and such. You can leave you ship (sort of) to enter other ships you own. But you're not able to wander around on planets or spacestations. Flying, trading, fighting, building factories and chasing babes in outer space. Ok, no babes so far but maybe later.

Is communications still flat - or have they improved that? Before you really had no need to use it.

Yeah, I remember exiting a ship to get into another one. Like the Carrier! Woohoo!
You could take anyone on in that thing!!!!

I've been playing X2 for a week or so now and I love the game. It's dumps all over Freelancer. The sky is the limit in this game (actually, that's a bad analogy). Although people compare this game to Freelancer, Privateer and those kinds of games, it is much more like a space simulator version of Port Royale. It’s a bit difficult to first get into (rather slow moving) but if you hang in there you should definitely get to like it if you’re into this style of game.

With respect to the “never leaving your ship” deal, I have to agree. Even a lame screen where you go into a space station bar would be cool (there are numerous cut scenes where you wander about planets and stations, but you can’t do it manually).

I never played X so I can’t compare, but as far as communications go, sometimes the storyline requires you to hail certain people in stations or ships, also it helps to ask friendly merchants for directions when you first start out, but it’s far from an integral part of the game.

I always liked flying into the space stations and plants. That was totally cool. I didn't mind so much the trading screen - but I just wished their was some character involvement in the game.

X and X:Tension started out the same way - slow to start and then things would pick up. My favorite past time in X:Tension would be to hijack pirate vessels, because they usually always had those massive 25mw shields on 'em. You could either make a lot of money selling them off.

Can you purchase a large transport in X2? That was fun. Just load all your ships in the transport ... maximum cargo space....It ruled!

Alrighty Dirty Dog and Rival - I bought it.

Think I'll pop it in this Friday on my next lonely day off and see what mischief I can conjur.

Are they serious about a ship you can get over a mile long!?

I got the game today (12/01/04 GTM+02:00) and i wanna as can some body make a small list of the controlls becouse i cant figure out how to bring up the map and to put my waypoints.

freelancer ( what a dissapointment that was )
how can u say that about freelancer? :cheeky: just...just how was freelancer a disapointment it was classe and if u think its so bad have u played it online now thats fun and if u dont like that go to www.lancersreactor.com and download some dam good mods for it. i dont see how u can not like that.

P.S.
sorry for putting it like that, people do have diffrent oppions and i respect that. 8):

I played Freelancer online for a while and it was good fun. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than X2. Actually X2 has turned out to be extremely boring for me and I've long since uninstalled it. X2 has all these features but it boils down to the gameplay sucks. Freelancer was a rush job and a lot of intended elements were never implemented (a lot like POTC) but the gameplay was great!

I have to confess that I was flying in multiplayer Freelancer in a hacked Battleship (the Orion I think it was called) and was telling players that they could get a battleship if they killed 1000 aliens. I think that might also have something to do with why I found it so much fun. :cheeky

Ravenheart, don't you have a manual? :cheers

`X-2` was fun for a while, but the game really boiled down to how much patience you had. And my patience with games lately has been very low. If I'm not entertained right away and from start to finnish I won't play.

Ravenheart, if you check out http://www.lancersreactor.com you should get the info you need. There's a file there somewhere to decompress the script files and then you can just edit them to change whatever you want to use. There's also a lot of already made mods you can apply. Basically that site is to Freelancer like this site is to POTC. Those guys are still creating mods right up to now!

Offline you can do anything at all but online you can't change the properties of what you have (like increasing your energy and such) since the server monitors that, but you can tell the server what you have, like which guns or which ship.

I actually put something like 27 lasers on my ship once, I was surprised that no one noticed that I could obliterate them in one shot!

X2 is currently o the very very verge of boring the crap outta me, if you want space piracy, you need IWAR2 edge of chaos, now that's a great game, amazing graphics, great story (that you can wonder off from) fantastic characters, nice script realistic physics (very rare in space games). just rocks too hard!!!!

Totally Sucky, but I just got a joystick to be able to play this game ... I've only had it on the shelf for ... oohhhh ... EVER! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Very fun if not a little `time-consuming` at the beginning if you go the merchant route to start. Outside of that, kick ass!
