Pirates of the Caribbean: Community Prequel Script

<!--quoteo(post=226133:date=Dec 15 2007, 09:10 PM:name=Commodore John Paul Jones)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Commodore John Paul Jones @ Dec 15 2007, 09:10 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Make good use of helicopter shots. Show Jack measuring out a course with his dividers. The camera moves in and starts to "fly" along over the map. We see a series of islands on the map that become the real thing as the shot morphs into a flying shot over them. The lines of laditude and longitude against parchment giving way to sparkling water rushing past gives the audience a sense of momentum and keeps things moving. We could also really use some good Hans Zimmer/Klaus Baldet music to help out.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
NIIIIICEEE!!!! I forgot about that approach. Good Save Commodore!!!

I dont think that would go with pirates, lets just see jack pinpointing different locations at different times and we see him do this, so we can see the progressing voyage. Because if we do the indiana jones thing the critics are going to have a field day.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Agreed, especially with a new Indiana Jones movie coming out soon. I was just using that as an example. The Commodore's idea sounds like it has some promise. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I was just thinking of a scene where Mercer keeps entering the captain's cabin (without invitation, I might add) and asking if they're there yet (in different words, of course - it shouldn't become TOO obvious). Jack would then point to their latest plotted position, allowing the audience to follow along on the journey. An Indiana Jones style map indeed wasn't what I was thinking. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

The Commodore's idea sounds brilliant, as per usual. I am thinking we can use that one for the much longer voyage to Indonesia, for example, to give the idea of a really long voyage without it feeling too long for the audience. We've got several voyages in the movie and I think it would be interesting if we could come up with a different way of showing each new part of the journey to clearly demonstrate the difference between each journey and the progression of the story.

So, for example, on the first journey to Africa the voyage montage can be the "Are we there yet?" scene I proposed, showing only the captain's cabin from the inside and not much from the actual journey outside, then on the voyage from Africa to the Caribbean we could show different shots of sailors at work, then from Mexico to Indonesia we could use the Commodore's idea. That way each voyage montage will be grander in scale than the previous one as the movie progresses and Jack sails into legend. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

As an aside: Has anyone seen The Mummy Returns? The <i>sandcastle montage</i> there is also a nice voyage montage and sounds somewhat similar to what the Commodore proposes. Just to give a possible idea. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Those are interesting ideas. I think they can work, especially if they are changed up constantly as you suggest. I like the Mercer angle, because you wouldn't expect a serious character like that to be part of that, albeit in a subtle way.

Indeed. We don't want him to literally say "are we there yet" over and over again. That'd be too obvious and quite out of character. But a montage of him being impatient about arriving could work and still be amusing in the same kind of way. Also the "land ho" scene could be the last part of this montage. Mercer again comes butting in for the umpteenth time on the journey and Jack is quite clearly fed up with him. Mercer sees on the chart that they're almost there and asks why he hasn't been notified. You then get the conversation scene that is then interrupted with the "land ho" from deck. Or something like that anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

(angry)
We should have seen land two days ago!

SPARROW
How did you figure that? Navigation is not an exact science. There's plenty of variables that can delay one. Wind, current, weather conditions, absence of rum.

MERCER
(frustrated)
You better do something about that.

JACK
Right, I'll get the rum.

MERCER
(draws his pistol)
Mr. Sparrow, would you like to be shot?

JACK
(smiles weakly)
I'd rather get the rum.

A tension filled moment passes, Mercer cocks his gun.

JACK
(holds a finger up)
Right. I'll get some land for you straight away.

SAILOR
(Heard form the deck)
Land ho!!!

JACK
(to Mercer)
There's your land.

MERCER
(Grumbles. Clearly he is disappointed.)
I so wanted to shoot you.

JACK
(Smirks, not really sure if Mercer is serious or not)
Set a course along the shore, if you please, Mr Edwards.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Just wondering Mercer if we are including these changes to the script?

I think we should use that scene in one form or another. It's just too amusing to leave out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Ahoy....

I'm not online most of the sundays and saturdays so srry for that.

I like Pieters idea about showing diferent voyages on a diferent ways.

btw... we will probably change much in a script by rewriting it a couple of times so... keep that in mind too.

I just like when Jack says:

Right, I'll get the rum.

The scene is just too good.

Offtopic:
I'd like to make a model of a ship (pirate one...ofcourse). Anybody know a good webpage that can help me?

I personally can't help you with the latter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Of course old salt we will use those. I just have to fill in any missing scenes in the middle. Thats what i am looking for: the possible arranging of the scenes.

<!--QuoteBegin-Morgan Terror+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Morgan Terror)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->talk to the commodore for that. he KNOWS.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have all of these and found them to be excellent projects to undertake. I modified the Captain Kidd one to look like the cursed <i>Black Pearl</i> and the Jolly Roger to look like the <i>Endinburgh Trader</i>.

You want to merge the two scenes?

that's the USS constitution model i've got. the captain kidd one looks really nice. i think i'll buy one someday. i HAVE made a fully wooden dinghy once. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I would remove the I would really like to shoot you line and would you like to get shot, Mercer wants it, but he doesn't say it.

I agree with Thomas. Partly. The "Would you like to get shot?" "No, I'd rather get the rum." interchange is really funny though.
