Pirates of the Caribbean: Community Prequel Script

Well I think its the best that we just ''kick out'' word LAND and put in DESTINATION.

MERCER
(angry)
Mr. Sparrow... Are we running late? Again ?!

JACK
...Of course not. CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow is never late.

MERCER
Oh really? We should have reached our destination two days ago!
(pointing at him)

Ill try to think up with something the next couple of days.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->We don't have it actually written, but we did have some ideas:
- Jack standing in the front of his boat when being rowed ashore, only to fall into the water when the boat bumps onto the sand
- Jack holding the map upside down, turning to the sea, saying "this can't be right", turning 180 degrees and walking into the jungle

<!--quoteo(post=245902:date=Mar 17 2008, 08:03 PM:name=gunsmith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (gunsmith @ Mar 17 2008, 08:03 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=245902"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Well I think its the best that we just ''kick out'' word LAND and put in DESTINATION.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's the least we need to do. But how does Mercer know they should've reached their destination two days ago? There's two options for that. Either Beckett told Mercer how long the journey would take and Mercer took that voyage length a bit too literal or Edwards has been keeping Mercer up-to-date on the ship's exact progress. Perhaps that second thing would be one of the very reasons why Edwards is aboard. But that doesn't work very well with my idea of Jack trying to impress Mercer with is exact knowledge of when they'd reach their destination. Unless Edwards' loyalties have shifted since the beginning of the voyage and is no longer giving Mercer accurate information.

I think first option is quite good....with Mercer taking it litteral. Mercer has no knowledge of navigating and ships so he took that litteral. We colud put it 3 or 4 days... not 2.

The amount of days doesn't really matter; just shows how quickly Mercer gets angry. If it's one day, Mercer gets angry real easy; if it's four days, Mercer can take a fair bit more. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

So you mean that Jack is already aware of when they will finally see land and that he timed it so that when Mercer draws his gun he's able to "produce" it on the spot? Or rather produce the "destination" since Pieter rightfully points out that land would always be in our sight.
Unless of course we have them stop somewhere before then, maybe at some island first. That can go in with Pieter's piratey land mark. Maybe the island has a landmark like that. Does that sound like its feasible?

I really like that, Pieter, the repetition, we could make it real funny.

When sailing along the coast, a navigator would always be pretty much aware of his current position. Of course old-day charts aren't as accurate as they are now, but I dare say with a capable navigation officer like Edwards in charge, they know pretty accurately where they are. And if the navigation officer knows, the captain would also know. The question is then: Does Mercer know? I think he doesn't. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/user_comment.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="user_comment.gif" />

Yes, I mean make a stop before they get to the village. Really, if we want to keep that Land Ho scene viable, we should have them preparing to stop somewhere else first where it would be viable. An island stop (we can come up with a reason) would keep that scene intact.

Yes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

OMG! We have to use the " Mr. Sparrow would you like to be shot?" That sounds so funny! I can see that being said. I cant comment much right now, i will later this evening. Glad to see the script is back in business!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'm glad Pieter bought that back up, that is a good scene. Like I had suggested before, maybe we can have them head somewhere else before going to the Ivory Coast, for whatever reason, so we could work that scene in the way it is.

I think the best way is that we have some kind of a mark and when sailors see it...they tell it to Jack.

<b>''Capt'n, we have reached our destination!''</b>

Old Salts idea isn't bad at all. They stop by at some island where they pick up a man who knows the location to he village. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

It could be along those lines. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

But I'm still for the idea Pieter wrote earlyer.
For that marking thing.

We can slightly rewrite our "land ho" scene so that it does make sense. It'd probably as easy as doing changing "land ho" in "destination ho". We've got plenty to tell as it is and I do think we should try to fit it in one 2,5 hour film. It shouldn't become tiresomely long and neither should we skip from scene to scene without giving the audience the chance to enjoy the scene they're watching.
Not to mention that eliminates the reason for having the "confused Jack with upside down chart" scene. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

One of the things I noted with the PotC sequels is that they're so packed with cool stuff that most of it doesn't ever register with the audience. Also it seems that each scene exists to bring us to the next scene, rather than each scene existing to be enjoyed. I think we should make sure that all scenes actually contribute to the movie-going experience and not have them exist for the purpose of getting us to the next scene. I think it's important to come up with a film that isn't really in a hurry, but does keep a good pace and doesn't become boring. This'll probably be the biggest challenge of all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Mercer: We should have <b><i>been there</i></b> two days ago!
Jack: How did you figure that? Navigation is not an exact science. There's plenty of variables that can delay one. Wind, current, weather conditions, absence of rum.
Mercer: You better do something about that.
Jack: right, i'll get the rum.

MERCER
(draws his pistol)
Mr. Sparrow, would you like to be shot?

JACK
(smiles weakly)
I'd rather get the rum.
Can we really afford to NOT use that? It's friggin' brilliant!

JACK
(holds a finger up)
Right. I'll get <b><i>the Ivory Coast for you</i></b> straight away.

SAILOR
(Heard form the deck)
<b><i>Destination</i></b> ho!!!

JACK
(to Mercer)
There's your <i><b>Ivory Coast.</b></i>

Changes in italics.
-----------------------------

This is an academic fix on it of course. Pieter did inject some clarity into the discussion when he reasoned that we can't keep heaping added scenes on to explain other scenes. I guess that's why Keith left him in charge. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I think these need changing.

Maybe:

JACK

Right. I'll get us there in a second.

SAILOR
(entering Jacks office)
Capt'n we have reached our destination.

Mercer looks angry at Jack.

Jack:
(smiles)
It's a gift mate.

Of course it does need changing, no doubt. I was just trying out what it would like like without the "land ho" angle. Because that is how we are going to craft it while keeping the humor of the original scene intact.
