Pirates of the Caribbean: Community Prequel Script

So we left off at the jungle scene. Weren't we just arriving, and were still discussing things with that scene? I think I submitted a small rough draft.

Well, this was the last post we had on the subject <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?s=&showtopic=10925&view=findpost&p=272632" target="_blank">here.</a> We were discussing the jungle scene. If you have a rough draft, Mercer, could you post it again?

There is a rough draft of the jungle scene in this thread. I think it was gunsmith's though.
We hadn't decided on the village scene, but we had some interesting brainstorming on French pirates, assaults and intrigue. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

Here's everything leading up to the jungle scene, and my draft for it as well:

INT. CAPTAINS CABIN, WICKED WENCH - DAY

JACK IS SEEN STANDING WITH HIS BACK TO THE DOOR, LOOKING OUT
THE STERN WINDOWS. FOOTSTEPS ARE HEARD AND JACK TURNS HIS
HEAD SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE DOOR, THE DOOR IS OPENED QUICKLY
AS MERCER ENTERS.

MERCER
(COLDLY)
Mr. Sparrow, are we running late?
AGAIN?!

19.

JACK
Of course not! CAPTAIN Jack
Sparrow is always due where he is
prompt! Er, prompt where he is
due. Ahem...

MERCER
Oh, well we were PROMPTLY due at
Turtle Rock several days ago if my
Lord Becketts calculations are
correct.

JACK
(TURNING HEAD
TOWARDS MERCER)
Well, your 'lord' knows nothing of
sailing a ship then, does he?
Navigation, or the act of moving
one self from point 'a' to point
'b' is not an exact science. There
is a multitude of variables that
can delay one. Wind, currents,
weather conditions, ABSENCE OF
RUM.

MERCER
(BECOMING SWIFTLY
IRRITATED)
Really now? Then I suggest you
change that!

JACK
(CHEERFULLY)
Right! I will get the rum. Drinks
for all!

MERCER
(BRINGS OUT HIS
PISTOL, HE IS
ANGERED, BUT
REMAINS CALM)
Mr. Sparrow, would you like to be
shot?

JACK
(SMILES WEAKLY)
I'd rather get the rum.

MERCER
(COCKS PISTOL)

20.

JACK
(HOLDS UP HIS
FINGER)
Right then, I will summon some
land for you straight away, for
apparently I am Poseidon.

SAILOR
(ENTERS THE CABIN
SWIFTLY)
Cap'n, we have reached land!

MERCER
(GIVES JACK A
STERN LOOK)

JACK
(SMILES)
King of the sea, mate. Its a gift.

MERCER
(HOLSTERS GUN)
I hope you never lose it, your
highness.

EXT. WICKED WENCH, MAIN DECK - DAY

JACK AND MERCER WALK ONTO THE DECK. EDWARDS IS LOOKING
THROUGH A SPYGLASS, JACK ALSO DOES THIS.

JACK
(HANDS SPYGLASS TO
MERCER)
There's your Turtle Rock.

MERCER GIVES JACK A COLD LOOK, HE IS CLEARLY DISAPPOINTED.

JACK
Quite impressive, Mr. Edwards,
impeccable timing.
(TO THE SAILORS)
All hands prepare the boats for
landing!

BOATS ARE LOWERED INTO WATER. SCENE JUMPS TO CLOSE TO THE
SHORE, CAMERA ANGLE IS SET TO THAT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON'S
CROSSING THE DELAWARE. JACK IS STANDING HEROICALLY LIKE
WASHINGTON. (DESCRIPTION HERE). THEY ARRIVE ON THE BEACH AND
PROCEED INTO THE JUNGLE.

21.

EXT. IVORY COAST JUNGLE - DAY

MERCER, NATHANIEL, JACK, AND A DETACHMENT OF SAILORS AND
MARINES CUT THROUGH THE FOREST.

JACK
(SLIGHTLY WORRIED)
So, there arent any of those cat
types around here? The big,
massive, striped ones, eh?

MERCER
(SARCASTICALLY)
Mr. Sparrow, if any tiger wants to
make his way and attack this
contingent, he will have to deal
with me, and a wall of lead.

JACK
I think he wouldn't stay around
too long with the first option
against him.

A ROAR IS HEARD NEARBY. MERCER AND EVERYONE PULLS THEIR
WEAPONS AND PREPARES TO FIGHT. MERCER LOOKS INTO THE WOODS
THEN TOWARDS JACK, LOOKS SLIGHTLY AWAY THEN LOOKS AT JACK
AGAIN WHO IS MISSING. HE APPEARS AT THE END OF THE LINE
HIDING BEHIND A MARINE.

JACK
Sorry there chap, I was just
protecting our rear.

MERCER ROLLS HIS EYES. THE GROUP MAKES IT TO THE VILLAGE.
MERCER STOPS AND ALLOWS THE GROUP TO GO FORWARD, HE GLANCES
BEHIND AND YOU SEE SEVERAL PIECES OF FOLIAGE SHAKE. HE LOOKS
FORWARD AND CONTINUES.

EXT. IVORY COAST VILLAGE - DAY

NATHANIEL
Mr. Sparrow, we will make our way
to the village leader, Mercer and
the marines will begin to set up
camp.

JACK
Right ho!

JACK WALKS THROUGH THE VILLAGE, MERCER AND NATHANIEL FOLLOW
BEHIND TO FIND A FREE SPACE TO SET UP TENTS. CHILDREN THROW
FLOWERS AROUND MERCER AT HIS FEET. HE CAREFULLY WATCHES EACH

CHILD. AS JACK AND NATHANIEL CONTINUE ON, THERE ARE SEVERAL
MORE CHILDREN PLAYING ON A WATER WHEEL. (EMPHASIS ON THIS).
THEY MAKE IT TO THE VILLAGE LEADER'S HUT.

INT. VILLAGE LEADER'S HUT - DAY

THE ROOM IS FILLED WITH SMOKE AND ODDITIES. JARS, BELLS, AND
OTHER THINGS. JACK AND NATHANIEL ENTER AND SEE THE LEADER IS
A WOMAN.

TIA DALMA
(SMILING)
Ah, Jack Sparrow and Nathaniel
Edwards. I am Tia Dalma, the
shaman of this village, and I have
foreseen your coming.

JACK
(CAREFULLY
MANEUVERS AROUND
A HANGING JAR
WITH A FINGER IN
IT, EYEING IT
SURPRISEDLY)
Tia Dalma, a pleasure.

TIA DALMA
So, you come to make camp here for
the night?

NATHANIEL
That and for some supplies.

TIA DALMA
Those you may have. But, I need
something in return.

NATHANIEL
We have brought some items that
may be to your liking.

JACK
Yes, of course. We will come to
that later. So, what is it you do?

TIA DALMA
(LAUGHS)
I said I am a shaman, I foretell
things. Jack Sparrow, you have a
destiny about you.

JACK
Do I now? A destiny...What might
this be?

TIA DALMA
(QUICKLY)
I still haven't received payment
for the first.

JACK
(SMILING)
My apologies.

TIA DALMA
Although, I would like to know
more about you, Jack.

Very good, Mercer. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Is that the most recent draft we have of the scene leading up to the jungle?

Si. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Yeps. But there is some stuff in older drafts that might also be worthwhile to use.
Also I think there's some subsequent comments on the latest draft in this thread somewhere.

Yes there are, Pieter, back on page 82 there is an earlier draft with some comments. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Well, lets continue shall we? I got a little stumped inside Tia's hut. I couldnt think of what should be said or done, so I tried something, but it stinks. Any ideas?

It's better than nothing, Gunsmith.
However, the conversation reminds me rather a lot of the one in DMC.
I'd rather see something rather different.
Most notably I would prefer to keep the "destiny about you" thing out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />
Perhaps we should have a village chief with whom Edwards and Mercer can talk and then Jack is just standing there.
Then Tia Dalma takes Jack alone and they have a bit of a foreshadowing off-the-record conversation?
But not too much; and definitly not to such an extent that Tia appears magical in any way.

You meant Mercer, right Pieter?

Sorry I haven't commented but I've been busy painting here the past week.

I like the village chief idea being separate from Tia and that she appears silently and pulls Jack off for a private chat. We could go places with that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I do mean Mercer; sorry.
I thought Gunsmith had originally written the hut scene. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I like the idea of Tia appearing silently instead of having a grand entrance if she spoke for the village. it kind of lets a major character like her slip in to the movie unannounced as it were. All the focus would be on the chief talking with Edwards and Mercer and Jack kind of hanging back, maybe looking around at the water wheel or other aspects of the village and that's when Tia can appear either behind him or beside him.

Ah! I see now. She walks up beside him and says something. Something along those lines while Mercer and Edwards are speaking with the chief. Good idea. I will have to brainstorm on this one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think it has possibilities. The scene can open up again with the water wheel and the children playing on it. The group can walk in and the village chief surrounded by his acolytes can meet them. Maybe as the camera pans around we can see the little girl with the flowers in her hand that she later tries to give Mercer. We can see some others looking at the group (Mercer, Edwards and Jack) with suspicion. Jack will not really be engaged in the conversation and his mind will likely be wandering as he gazes around at the sights (water wheel) and sounds of the village and at an unsuspecting moment Tia can silently show up. Maybe Jack can be following the progress of the flower girl as she walks by the group looking at them and then as he turns and looks back the other way, there is Tia. Or maybe we can see a woman walking up from behind him with her head down and when she reaches him she lifts her head and its Tia. Something like that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

That sounds pretty good. I like the idea of not drawing attention to Tia.
Actually, if possible it would be great if at the end of the movie, you'd hardly remember her.
Until you see her again in DMC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

You mean a scene like this at the end of the movie?

I like the idea of Tia not having attention drawn to her too when she first appears. But she does have a part to play in our script both in the village and later on the ship when Jack takes over. How could we keep her in the background so to speak?

I didn't mean anything about a scene at the end of the movie.
Actually, if we want to keep her presence a bit low-key, a scene with her at the end of the movie is something we definitly wouldn't want.
It would indeed be a bit of a challenge to keep her inconspicuous, but we can always try.
The least we can do is to make what she says and does to be not obviously magical, so no clear fortune-telling.
She gives Jack his compass halfway during the movie, but he doesn't find out what it does until much later in the movie.
Hopefully most people have forgotten who had given that compass by that time.
In any case, what I'm trying to say is let's not try to draw more attention to her magical abilities than necessary.

Oh, okay. Misunderstood that sentence of yours. You meant that you'd hope she hadn't made much of an impression on people so that by the end of the movie she was pretty much forgotten about.

I agree about keeping her magic low-key. It would be foolish to have her flaunting it. And we have so much else going on we wouldn't want to overburden the script with it. I think we can have her low-key when she is in and Jack can find out later towards the end of the movie about the real power of the compass like you suggested.
