Pirates of the Caribbean: Community Prequel Script

Sounds good to me.
So how about continuing our script-writing?
I'm back home again and won't start schoolwork until February,
so I'll actually have some time for a change.

Okay, then. I think we have the landing (land ho scene) and the jungle scene pretty much nailed down. I think that we should rework the village scene starting when they emerge from the jungle and then add in the changes we have been tossing back and forth and see how it looks.

Yep; village scene is next. I'll post something later... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<i>I reworked the scene a bit. Just tossing out an idea. I tried to have Tia show up unexpectedly. We can debate whether she should offer up right away that she is the village shaman and has foreseen Jack, Mercer and Edwards coming like Mercer had written in his version.</i>

JACK WALKS THROUGH THE VILLAGE, MERCER AND NATHANIEL FOLLOW
BEHIND TO FIND A FREE SPACE TO SET UP TENTS. CHILDREN THROW
FLOWERS AROUND MERCER AT HIS FEET. HE CAREFULLY WATCHES EACH

CHILD. AS JACK AND NATHANIEL CONTINUE ON, THERE ARE SEVERAL
MORE CHILDREN PLAYING ON A WATER WHEEL. (EMPHASIS ON THIS).

JACK
(Looks at the water wheel in fascination)
That's interestin'.

MERCER
(Looks around)
We need to find the village chief.
(He nods to the marines, who begin to fan out among the natives.)

JACK
There was a woman here, I believe, who spoke for the village.....
(His voice trails off as an elderly man emerges from a hut across from them and walks forward with a few more men flanking him on either side.)

CHIEF
(Spreads out his arm in a welcoming gesture)
Welcome.

(Jack, Edwards and Mercer step toward the three men)

JACK
(Carefully maneuvers around a hanging
jar on a pole with a finger in it, eyeing
it in a surprised manner)
A pleasure, gentlemen.

CHIEF
(Eyeing the soldiers)
You have come to make camp here for the night?

NATHANIEL
That and for some supplies.

CHIEF
Those you may have. But, I need
something in return.

NATHANIEL
We have brought some items that
may be to your liking.

MERCER
(A bit impatiently)
We also have some need of your services (he looks around) as well as the villagers.

(A little girl walks up to Mercer and holds out a white flower to him. He pretends not to notice her and the chief seems a little disturbed by this.)

JACK
(Observing the unsettled situation, he steps forward)
I'm Captain...

TIA DALMA
(Appears out of nowhere)
... Jack Sparrow.

I like it. I also can see the chief look at the little girl, and then back at Mercer in a little odd way. I think that would be a nice addition. Good work Old Salt. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

(BTW, Did anyone see Valkyrie? They have 4 Pirates of the Caribbean actors in there: Gibbs, Mercer, Beckett, and Davy Jones. I know only 3 of their real names, David Schofield, Tom Hollander, Bill Nighy. I dont know Gibbs' real name. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> )

Kevin R. McNally. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
Looks pretty good, Old Salt!
Might need a bit further work, but definitly a good start. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->JACK
There was a woman here, I believe, who spoke for the village.....<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Has Jack been there before after all?

I think so. Since Jack knows the exact location of the village then it would make sense that he had visited once before. Of course, he could also have heard about it through word of mouth from the assorted shady characters he deals with, but maybe it would be better to have had him here once and maybe either having met Tia at that time or heard rumor of her.

Where'd Jacks chart leading there come from? Did he draw it?
An officer of his? A shady friend, perhaps?
Why was Jack there before? What impact will that have on our story?
[Just trying to create some interesting discussion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

How about an officer of his drew the map to the village? Why? I haven't figured it out yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> I like that though.

I don't know if Jack being there will have to have an impact on the story. Do we need to explain it? Would it come up later after Jack frees Tia? If we do decide it has relevance then I guess we'd better work on a bit of a backstory to this.

Always like an interesting discussion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Sometimes questions like that do generate interesting responses that can be used. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I'm thinking IF Jack has been there before, it should have some impact on the story.
Otherwise he might as well not have been there before. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Okay. That makes sense. And I don't think there is any way around it. We need Jack to know the location of this village so he can bring Mercer there, correct? Now there are three ways Jack could know the location:

1 - He visited there before.

2 - A shady officer told him about the village sometime in the past and drew him a map.

3 - Of course, there could also be a combination of the first two. The shady officer told him of the village and he visited there straightaway, which
probably would make more sense now that I think about it. Why wouldn't Jack have checked it out?

It doesn't have to be too elaborate. But it we do go this route we will have to fill it in. Why was Jack there before? In fact, we can have Mercer ask him this question and have Jack give his usual flippant answer, but one that answers Mercer's question.

Some ideas:

A - The shady officer gave Jack the location because he didn't have the means of getting to the village himself.
B - There was some treasure in the village that the shady officer had heard of and Jack agreed to go after it but after having met Tia the first time he decided to forgo going after it, or possibly Tia gave it to him after meeting him. Can we go anywhere with this?

If Jack has been there before, indeed there must've been a reason for it.
That reason NOT being Tia, preferrably.
Treasure might be an option, though I would prefer something more interesting.
Possibly something that actually has something to do with our story.
After all, if it WERE treasure, Jack would've gotten it already and it wouldn't really be of any interest anymore.
Would a valuable tradable commodity work?
After all, what story DOES Beckett feed Jack to go to the village?

Well, the treasure could be anything. It doesn't have to be a pot of gold.
I was toying around with the idea of the compass. That the shady officer told Jack about it and that it resided in this village. Now for whatever reason we come up with, Tia doesn't give it to him when he visited the village previously, but she does give it to him now when he frees her. And she says something like....

"For what you've done I'll give you what you've been after."

Perhaps she told him the last time they met he wasn't ready for such an item but now he is.

I don't believe we ever nailed down exactly what Beckett told Jack to make him WANT to go to the village, have we? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Not really.
As for the compass, that's an interesting thought.
I'd personally prefer if Jack got it from Tia without knowing what it does though.
Or that was my original thought anyway.
Reason being, that way we can downplay the magic and have Jack discover it's use later.
Imagine getting a compass that points to what you want most and you do not know it's power.
How would you find out what it does?

It may be a way though to get Jack to go back to that village, if Beckett told him that the compass would be given to him through a deal he had worked out with the village shaman. Although that would then seem to suggest that Beckett knows where the village is also, unless he met or had a representative meet with one of the village elders some place else, maybe the French port.

Maybe Jack is just told by his shady friend that the compass does something special besides point north, but that he is not sure what. That would leave it murky and not really bring magic into the script, at least not full force.

We could have a lot of fun with that, I suppose. Maybe have the compass keep pointing at some wench later on in the script when Jack is at a tavern or something and then having him figure it out. Or someone else figure it out.

GODVERDOMME! It seems the forum crash deleted all my recent bloody script-writing work!
And I didn't save it on my HD either. Does anyone still have it? *IS VERY ANGRY RIGHT NOW!*

I'm sorry, Pieter. As I said in another thread, I wish I would have saved it as well. All that hard work down the drain. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

It really is too bad, but it was a quick first draft anyway.
Do you happen to have any comments on what you remember?
If you do, it wouldn't be in vain after all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

No I don't. I didn't really have the time to do anything other than give it a quick scan. I was going to read it last weekend. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

FOR ****'S SAKE!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
