Pixel Shader problems...

Hey everyone.
I recently purchased POTC and I have a bit of a problem. The water is distorted (black patches and sometimes it disappears totally) and it also causes occasional white lines across the screen and the game slows down considerably. I will try to post a picture soon. My specs are Athlon 700mhz, 512mb Ram and 64mb SiS Xabre 400. The rest of the surroundings like towns and sky and the main map are totally fast and keep a steady `15-20` FPS but when I look at the actual water, the FPS drop to `2-3`. Is there any way I can disable the pixel shaders? I know my video card supports it (on other games the pixel shader works) and on the game's box it says that a video card supporting PS is recommended (but it seems it's not required in the minimum requirements).

Any help is appreciated.

PS. I also tried to install the Nvidia whitewash patch to no avail and I am currently downloading Build 11, hopefully it will help.[/img]

I'm no expert on this but will take a stab at it... Have you tried turning off `anti-aliasing`?

You should also try making a search to see if you have the latest drivers for your vid card.

And if all else fails, the Omega drivers seem to help a lot of people with their video troubles. <a href="http://www.omegadrivers.net/" target="_blank">http://www.omegadrivers.net/</a>

Hope this helps! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Let us know! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Nope, AA is turned off and I have the latest drivers. Am I wrong in saying the Omega drivers are for Nvidia and ATI.

I tried setting mipmaps to 1 in the Whrsea.c but the game crashes.
I will try running the game with vertical synchronization but I doubt it will do anything.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Again, welcome aboard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Sounds like the Xabre 400 doesn't implement PS/VS right, perchance. Which wouldn't surprise me; SIS has done pretty terribly with graphics cards.
It may on the other hand be a driver /POTC interfacing problem, but I doubt that SIS bothers much with driver fixing and we know we won't get fixes from the other side.

So. For all those reasons: If I were you, I'd shell out $50 or so for a Geforce4 Ti4200. _Not_ an MX mind, those don't have pixel/vertex shaders. For slightly more, an ATI 9600 or X600, or a Geforce 6600.
Also, with that speed chip, you may want to think about upgrading that as well; I don't think that speed chip would cause visual _issues_, but it will play POTC kinda slow.

Thanks for your welcome and help. Unfortunately I currently don't have the means to upgrade my video card and besides, I'm going to stick with the good old Sea Dogs.
