PoTC crashes to desktop

Agamemnon74

Powder Monkey
Hello , having recently loaded Windows XP first edition. , PoTC has been crashing to desktop regularly whereas it ran 100% in win 98 second edition , wondering what likely causes might be ?

The processor is 1300 mhz , with Radeon 9600 video card. 500 mb ram. All worked ok with win 98.

The same occurs with build 13 as well.

The crashes occur randomly without warning normally when selecting open sea . sometimes it will run ok for quite a while , other times it fails more often. Another strange symptom is I am unable to visit Greenford at all, just crashes to desktop , sometimes it actually restarts the computer.

I have tried un installing and re installing, makes no difference. Could it be a conflict with the mainboard ? Any settings that may need adjusting ?

Any ideas ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Just for clarity's sake: You get those crashes with AND without the modpack?

Hello , yes oddly enough even after a clean install of the original game , it will crash unpredictably when selecting the open sea option , and also when going to moor at Greenford ! I can travel anywhere but Greenford. ( This is on my father's computer , he's 80 and has been playing POTC for the last year on an older computer, so I installed win XP series 1 for him but this is when these odd problems occurred ) Seems a pity to have to go back to win 98 again.

You can try to <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">enable error logging</a> and see what you get in the system.log, compile.log and possible error.log after the crash occurred. Sounds really quite weird though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

An interesting fix seems to be to visit the deck cabin before selecting open sea , no more crashes when using this path , also works for going ashore at Greenford ! Weird. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

With what modpack version is that again? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

It was with the original un modified game, and with build 13 . For some reason the error does not occur when visiting the deck cabin prior to selecting open sea. Strange <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Why Greenford ? It was possible to go ashore at any port except Greenford, visit the deck cabin first , then select the mooring icon to go ashore at Greenford and no problem, fail to visit the cabin first and mooring at Greenford means a crash to desktop ! Bizarre, but at least there is a fix!

Thanks for taking the time to look into it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

I really don't understand that bug, but seems like at least you found a work-around. That's something, I suppose. Could anyone confirm that this occurs on other computers as well?
