potc startup problem

palerider

Landlubber
hi there ,i have installed potc ok but when i start up the game the screen goes black a small icon comes up at the bottom right corner a short sound is heard and thats all i get .
i run ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 with vista.
what can i do to play this game.??
where can i get a good copy of this game???

You didn't install any mods yet, did you? Try using windowed mode instead of fullscreen and see what happens.
You can set this with Config.exe or manually change it in engine.ini using Notepad.
Also <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">enable error logging</a> and post the contents of system.log, compile.log and the possible error.log here after you tried to start the game.

Does it give you an error code? Or does it just lock up completely? One thing you might try is installing DirectX 9, if you don't have it already, it will install on vista just fine and it provides some older DirectX functions that aren't available, or are accessed differently in DirectX 10.

I might have to try that myself. Maybe I'll get my Bonaire waterfall back. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Do you get into the main menu at all? What if you move the files from RESOURCE\VIDEOS elsewhere?
Do you get any visuals then? A loading screen or menu or something?
From the Build Mod Files thread:<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><i>The game tends not to work if:</i>

Glad you got it working mate! I have had many problems with ffdshow and Vista, it doesn't like that codec at all. I ran across a handy little utility that makes disabling and re-enabling codecs quite simple, it's called InstalledCodec. It will give you a complete list of every codec on your system and allow you to disable them without uninstalling them, in case you need the codec that is causing problems later. It also makes tracking down the offending codec a hell of a lot easier!

You can read more about it and download it here:
