PotC vs CoAS

Xiathorn

Landlubber
It's been a long while, and I'm surprised my account still exists, but : I recently got back into playing PotC w/ Build 13, and I remembered how much I love this game. How surprised I was, then, to discover a new kid on the block from 2009.

However, as money is tight, I'd like to ask for a community-based view on the advantages of the new game vs the beauty that was (and still is!) PotC w/ Buildmod. I tried the search function and have watched quite a few videos, but most of it seems very similar to PotC.

So, without further ado, would someone who loved the ship battles, loves corvettes, and enjoyed (but didn't love) the land-based stuff enjoy CoAS more than PotC?

My main questions are :

How is boarding handled? It wasn't great in PotC vanilla, was much improved in Build, but I'd be really happy if it was fleshed out more. Is it, in CoAS?

Is there as much reliance on land as there was in PotC? Can I save whilst at sea, and only go to port if I really need to?

Is there a notable difference in the damage models?

Finally, and this is perhaps redundant but my search-fu isn't all that great - will something as fantastic as the build mod be coming to CoAS?

I apologise if these have all been answered elsewhere - if they have, please yell at me (And drop link to where it was answered!)

I have not got CoAS yet (but it is on its way <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />)

We ran some polls and "generally" the community is of the thinking: We will finish Build 14 and then we will probably port it over to CoAS

This however will probably take over a year.

So yes we are going to move onto CoAS and when we do it will be very worthwhile <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I will try and answer your other questions when I have the game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Refer <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13604&st=0&start=0" target="_blank">here</a> for a thread already dedicated to the topic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Oh, wow. My search-fu really DOES fail! How I failed to see a post with almost the exact name as mine worries me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thank for for the reply!

I can offer you no proper information on CoAS, since I don't yet have it either.

From what I understand, CoAS is definitly the best unmodded pirate game there has been in a long while,
but from readin the forums I gather it is overly hard even on the lowest difficulty level
and there's a bunch of quests that are more annoying than fun.

AoP allowed for save-at-sea and I imagine that CoAS, being a successor of AoP, would allow for that as well.
I think boarding in CoAS is pretty much the same as in PotC: You're loaded on a deck with enemies for you to kill.
There's a bunch of nice ship vs. ship location models used there, which we have also included in our recent Build mod updates.
As far as I'm aware, there's no real updates to anything damage-related.

But there is a lot of gameplay value and I think it'd be worth getting it if ever the price and availability allow you to.
In my personal case, I could <i>afford</i> the game, but simply cannot <i>find</i> it for purchase anywhere! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

What I can tell you, and you might've noticed that already, is that we're still developing the Build mod and it keeps getting better and better.
Although it's a not-yet-finished work-in-progress version, Build 14 Alpha 9.5 Patch 2 seems pretty playable and adds a LOT of new features.
And since you've got PotC already, you can try that out for free.

We actually have a save-at-sea mod for the Build mod too, which will be released in an update some time soon.
But we first have to seperate it from our development version,
which still contains a bunch of bad bugs that we don't want to release to the general public.

Not quite. IIRC, in POTC you had to fight your way down the ship if you didn't manage to kill all the enemies right away on the deck, in AOP and COAS that is no longer the case. You simply fight one battle on the deck, then a one on one duel with the captain in his cabin, and that's it.

Not really sure if POTC had this, but you can break off stuff if you bump your ship into things. That's usually the case with the bowsprit, but I managed to dismast my ship when I tried to cut too close across the Bluebird's overhanging aft. Oopsie. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

My honest opinion: It's hard as hell to get started. Without the help from these forums I'd barely be able to trade, let alone get through the missions. The game crashes on me once or twice a day, not devestating, but it's annoying. Both minor annoyances because this is without a doubt one of the most fun games ever. I was "meh" toward AOP1, but this game is a HUUUGE improvement, and somehow it just sucks you in. Plus with mods, it will continue to be great for a long time I think.

My advice: buy it, buy it now, buy 10 copies! (ok just 1 copy, but tell your friends)

You won't be disappointed, seriously.

where and how can you get those Build's for POTC

I foundet it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

PotC Build Mod isn't exactly hard to find? Especially not on this site. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I wouldn't call it an improvement, but it is a difference. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I would sometimes call it an improvement, when you can't be bothered fighting through deck after deck.

But over all I wouldn't call it an improvement

It is different though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

As AOP1 definitely had multiple deck fights (which were great fun) I would expect AOP2 COAS to have them too, haven't got as far as a ship yet though with my copy of COAS as I had to do the Peter Blood intro quests all over again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I only played AOP for a little while, but I don't recall multideck fights in it.
