Ok, I have POTC but I was wondering about Sea Dogs? Which game is better overall? Also, how are the loads in Sea Dogs, there are a lot of loads in POTC? I am mainly interested in open endedness and immersion but I would be interested in any and all feedback.

Also, what about Age of Pirates too?

I can't comment on Sea Dogs really. From what I've heard, it's really good, made even better by the mods that have been made. Pirates of the Caribbean is average (better graphics though), but is made excellent by the mods <i>still being made</i>. Age of Pirates has better graphics, but not much modding has been done on it to improve the game to what it could've been. As far as I'm concerned: Pirates of the Caribbean is BY FAR the best. But I am biased, having never played either Sea Dogs or Age of Pirates and having been involved in the modding of Pirates of the Caribbean for over three years now.

I have never played Sea Dogs, but I owned AOP before getting PoTC (which I got thanks to these forums!). Of the two, AOP has better graphics, a slightly better officer system, better sword fighting, and a few other features like the world map and autosave on boarding that are nice. But the modded PoTC is hands down the more immersive experience, better game play, more active modding community, and overall better storyline. That's my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I've played both POTC & Sea Dogs.

Sea Dogs was a good game which became awesome with the Mods. There were countless quests, awesome ships & many ways to make money.

POTC is made better, has better graphics & has become awesome with the Mods.

Overall POTC is way better than Sea Dogs.

Honestly : you should start with Seadogs, unmodded. Then modded if you want (Lib mods here : <a href="http://www.highnotez.com/hosemerc/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.highnotez.com/hosemerc/index.htm</a>, + modding tools).
I've been playing at this game during a long time. In my opinon, even now on some aspects modded PotC still cannot match unmodded Seadogs. You have 4 main quests (serving England, France, Spain or the Pirates - in order of difficulty from the easiest to the most difficult), and a lot of side ones. Many islands and ships. A very nice ambiant with good musics, menus, well-developped characters... If you chose Seadogs, watch out for the patch. Without the patch you'll have a lots of bugs (and big ones, like the Pirate main quest not being playable to the end.). But with the patch the game will be a lot more easier, so less atractive. I'll sugest you to first play the non-patched game (if you manage to find one), then the patched game when you'll have finished it several times.

If you choose to play first modded PotC (playing unmodded PotC is not very usefull, unless you really want to understand how much work have been done by the modding community since... ), you'll certainly find it hard to then switch to Seadogs. And you'll definitly loose something.

I started on Sea Dogs, loved it.
then Sea Dogs modified. Liked that even more, especially the option of choosing which mods to play or not play.
Both incredible games.
Then the Sea Dogs community (Ellabye) suggested PoTC because of the superior graphics.
Then came the PoTC mods,

... and now I'm HOOKED.

I still have Sea Dogs.

I still have Sea Dogs, but I rarely play it since I've been on POTC.

But if you need anything information on Sea Dogs here are some useful links.

I actually found an old copy of POTC I had! I ordered Sea Dogs and AOP through Amazon. AOP is pretty cool, I can see what you mean, I wish I could combine POTC and AOP for the perfect pirate game. The only thing I really miss in all these games is the ability to go to the captains cabin. I mean, you fight enemy captains there, what's the deal?

BTW, ARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh

You can do do that in the modded PotC. You can go to your own ship's captain's cabin and when the enemy captain surrenders on boardings, you go into parley with the enemy captain in his own cabin. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I wish I could have that real nice Class 1 ship cabin on my smaller fast ships! It'd be ideal for the proposed "Captain's Table" mod too.

You could, but it wouldn't be realistic. In Alpha 8 you'll be able to set the cabin for each ship specifically in ships_init.c.

I played all these games, and I must agree with Pieter. POTC + Build14A6 is the best Pirate Game (for me is the best game at all).

Sea Dogs was the first great Pirate Game, but today its graphics is really old.
AOP could be a great game with a story and less bug, but haven't a story and many bug.

I have just voted for PotC, and I agree that the poll will speak for itself.
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Why do I still need to explain my feed-back, I wonder?! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

I guess it is because I still play the Sea Dogs every once in a while. Even though out of date in terms of engine and graphics, the game is a treasure in terms of quest options and choice of play.
Plus that with the fact that ships and sea battles are not bad at all considering the age, and add to it the fact that the game is really difficult and challenging and you realize why they call it a game aging with grace.
My personal opinion is that Sea Dogs could provide with a lot of inspiration for quest writters specially in terms of small stories and sidequests like rendez-vous at sea, finding missing persons, searching or questing for very speciffic items and so on.
For whatever it is worth, my advice for anyone asking would be: If you don't have it: Get it ! You won't be disappointed and it would provide with a lot of fun.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> All this being said however, the PotC mods have brought this game to so high a level of implemented creativity that the development points to one direction only: Becoming the greatest pirate game ever, that is! With all the fun features imaginable being added to the game, it is only a matter of time before these mods will exceed in accomplishment everything else existing.

So all this fantastic work gets my vote ! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Happy Hollidays, everybody!

Right now my own site is down, but you can still get the files from our <a href="http://potc.moddb.com" target="_blank">ModDP Profile</a> and the <a href="http://www.pafiles.com/build" target="_blank">Build FTP</a>. I recommend you just get Build 13 Final; that's the most recent stable release.
