Consider, if you will, an alternate game called Silent Hunter.
Although this game is not in our prefered Piratey theme, it has a great deal to
teach us on the subject of modding.

<b>First off</b>
Mods need readmes.
Every Mod needs to include helpful information for future users to discover.
Like:
a ) Who made the Mod <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />
b ) What program and version the Mod is intended for. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
c ) any notes to assist you in installing the mod <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />
d ) Copyright notice!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

<b>Secondly</b>
There is a clear, concise and maintained forum announcement on where to obtain and install the Mod. This post also details what the mod actually does. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

<b>Thirdly</b>
For pure polish and professional presentation, they have built an independent web page for their Super Mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Following this kind of example,
The AOP community could produce exceptionally well documented and presented mods
for the Pirate Playing Community. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Hmm, if I understand that correctly, then, speaking in AOP terms again, if I install a mod, which eg. changes the ships_init.c (inserting a new ship, or sth), I'm not allowed to touch it again, without asking the modding guy before? Stupid rule, if you ask me. No question, that some artistic work can be kept from changing but "any of the files"?... I don't know.

This is reasonable.
But it is not required.
That is the nature of any copyright statement.
You include what you see fit.

another popular copyright rider over at Silent Hunter is :
.... may not be used in any commercial product ....

It simply means what the original programmer felt was important to the work.

I have a request too: IF someone often upload files on the ftp, could they please make an own folder, other wise the ftp will be crowed with single files, and that will become a bit messy.

Aye, I second that motion. And I'd love to have my own folder on the FTP, I have plans for doing many new ships.

Working on a Junk right now. Thinking I may want to also do some really nice dragon headed cannons for it too.

whooo, sounds cool. But we need to make it a Pirate only ship (just like i have to make the British Brig anenglish only ship)

Well, I realize they aren't exactly period for the Caribbean, but am planning a whole string of different Junks. **grins** Just couldn't resist the idea of some nice Asian style vessels to scoot about it.

I'll keep you updated and get some screenshots out when I'm happy with how they are coming along!
