Does the new Pirates have a promotion system similar to the old one where you start out with military ranks and advance to titles such as Count & Baron??

Although I have never read anything which would directly answer your question, I would have to strongly assume the answer is yes, they will have such a system. For one thing Sid Meier said in a recent video interview that they were keeping all of the things that were fun abot the original and taking out what was not fun. The example he gave of something which would be taken out was the use of the sextant whereby mariners would track their (latitudinal or longitudinal?) position by the sun. It will not be in the new Pirates! (Actually it was taken out long before now and never made it into Pirates! Gold). Since the entire advancement system is so popular and integral to your lifelong success as a pirate/privateer, they will most certainly add it. Just to show you how certain I am of this I will provide an analogy that I think is comparable in scope and relevance:

I have not heard direct confirmation at this time that next year's NHL season will feature the use of wood and aluminum sticks, but we can say most assuredly that it will.

Don't sweat it. The new Pirates! is going to feature EVERYTHING that you love, NOTHING that you disliked and a whole lot more to make you fall in love all over again. Believe me.

Yes there is a system. You blast enemy ships who your country is at war with, and then you come back and get promoted ... meet the Governor's daughter ... "Do a little dance ... make a little love ... get down tonight!"

Were you able to change nationality in original Pirates? (dont remember)

Wil it be possible in Pirates 2?

I read a preview that said that when the governor likes you more he can assign you captain or commander (it’s even in my FAQ). So the system is there. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think was able to change your nationality in pirates.
And I also think that you can do it in pirates 2.

I'd imagine you could change your nationality, just start attacking ships that belong to enemies of the desired nationality and they'll like you <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" />

But what I want to know is can you become a governer after sometime? I wonder if when you successully attack a town you can rule it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

In the original game, once you had beaten down a town, you sometimes had the option to implant a governor with the nationality of your choosing. Of course, if you took out a Spanish town and placed an English governor, your popularity rating from the English went way up. You never had the option to actually rule the town though, and I don't see any indications that they have added that functionality to the game.

You never really changed your nationality in the original game, though you could decide to start fighting for a different country by obtaining a letter of marque from a different country. You could actually sail under multiple letters of marque. I usually tried to sail for whoever was at war with the Spanish and spent most of my time beating up on them. Of course, when you attained lots of rank for the other 3 countries and wanted to sail for the Spanish, you were so dispicable in the eyes of the Spanish, that it was usually impossible to obtain a letter or marque from them. Pick your poison I guess... you are always going to make someone mad, unless you choose the life of a trader.

I am intrested whether your rating can decrease.

If I dont remember right it was impossible to go down in rating in original pirates. say that you loose all your money etc. shouldnt your rating go down.

from Kings advisor to begger... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have no idea if you can go down the rank (although, why wouldn’t you be able to?) but I am pretty sure if you *were* successful at one time, and then you fail a few missions, your rep with him will go down.
