Quest proposal

v_Grimmelshausen

Landlubber
I posted a shorter version of this already in the Tips & Tricks section, but decided to make a new topic in the apprpopriate section as well.

If there´s one thing we´re a bit lacking in PotC is things to do after the Main quest (which, I hope is still playable with the new islands), as I have realized.
Now, remembering - don´t ask me how or why, perhaps because I remembered there´s a Hook skin in Pieters mod pack - there were pirates in Peter Pan, I reread the book online the other night <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> and ended up wondering "Now, what would happen if Hook and Sparrow ever were to meet?" I mean, they´re complete opposites (Hook seems to be modelled a lot after Bartholomew Roberts, and Sparrow, well, he´s the way he is), so it´s a great opportunity for getting hilaroius dialogues into the game. We already got a lot of those, but more won´t hurt, or would they? But just what might bring them together? The solution was simple - a really big venture, that no one could do on his own. And which one would be the grandest coup of them all? There my latest adventure playing Pirates! Gold came to my mind: Capturing the Treasure Fleet in the harbour of Havanna. As far as I know, Havanna is the only city in the Carribean that has not been plundered by pirates in the 17th century (it has been plundered in the 16th century, however). So, something really big has to happen. Of course, neither Hook or Sparrow would get the idea of joining forces to do something like that, here my vanity (and ego, without the "alter" prefix <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ) enters the stage in person of Captain John Jacob Christofer von Grimmelshausen, ex-mercenary of the Thirty Years War, at present captain of the 32-gun frigate (corvette) Beatrice (named after his wife Beatrice d´Orleon, daughter of the governor of Martinique) and plotting on a big venture to crown his buccaneerin career. He sits in the tavern of Tortuga while his ship is careened, smoking his pipe and enjoying his wine (he´s a wine drinker) as *Nathaniel Hawk* (or whatever the player´s name may be), accompanied by Danielle, steps in. Having heard of his - Nathaniel´s - adventures with Silehard, he decides to propose this guy a venture of such daring that no one ever thought about it, the said raid on Havanna. Even both of them are of course not in the position of attacking one of the most fortified strongholds of the whole Carribean, so Grimmelshausen gathers together the most notorious pirate captains of their time as companions, Sparrow and Hook. First I envisioned something like the preparations for the Maracaibo raid in "Captain Blood" (the book), the ships setting out to capture more ships to transfer troops, but as we can have no more than four ships in a fleet, I limit it to the three captains (Grimmelshausen, Hook and Sparrow) to join Nathaniel. Once landed in a bay a short distance from Havanna, Grimmelshausen leaves his ship and takes a good part of the crew to attack from the land side, while the other three attack from sea and prevent the treasure galleons from escaping. The Redmont harbour would be the perfect scenery for this, the fort on a land sprit outside, protecting a huge bay serving as a harbor. Now, imagine that harbour filled with a couple of galleons, with some battleships mixed in, protected by the strongest fort to be found in the whole area.

For the ships, well, Grimmelshausen uses his corvette (as mentioned above), Sparrow the Pearl (what else, after all?) and for Hook, I think something menacing would be in order, a frigate (in the book the "Jolly Roger" is a brig, but that´s a bit too small for my taste), like <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v94/markwalters/POTC/frigate.jpg" target="_blank">this one</a>, but a bit redone, the blue stripes on the sides away and the blue stern decoration changed to gold, perhaps (something I wanted to have done for quite some time, as a matter of fact).

I believe it could be done, in the essence of it it´s not different from the Clair Larouse and the "Capture of Greenford" quests.
So, what do you think? Shall I keep it in mind or dump it into the trash bin?

Well, as I mentioned before, I like this idea very much! It would be great to have some more quests in the game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> And the fact that you have another quest to model it after will help you in creating this one. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Very good, indeed!

Thanks a lot, Cat.

Hm, 28 readers, just one reply? Come on, I´d like your opinions. Should I choose other characters instead of Sparrow and Hook (Grimmelshausen stays, no chance he gets out)? Any ideas to expand it a little?

Well, I like the dichotomy of Sparrow and Hook, that would work well, I think. I've got a skin of Sir Francis Drake, but I think someone's using it for a quest so I can't promise him to you...

I've got that other "explorer" type - the blond Germanic type - I'd like to use him somewhere, eventually...

Then there's my Armand character - I'd like to have him out on quests too - but I can't see him diametrically opposed like Sparrow and Hook, although I think Armand is more of a straightforward rascal than a sly dog like Sparrow. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Your idea opens up a whole new avenue for creating more piratical CHARACTERS for the game, people who are recurring (such as Danielle, or what I'd like to do with Estrella and Armand, for instance)... Makes me want to start fiddling about with mixing again. I had a few different guys, a priest's head on a merchant body, Ralph Fawn's head on another body... Haven't done anything more with them yet, but there's potential there...

There are a lot of ways this can go...

I think maybe you're not getting responses because most of us are REALLY BUSY working on our own projects...

I wonder what it would take to have each of the captains who join you EACH with their own fleet... I wonder if that could be done, stack the "AI" ships with a fleet of their own. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

And not just on our own POTC projects - some of us have to work for a living, too.
I like your quest idea, Grim, but I currently don't have the energy to come up with any witty suggestions.

I survive on an illusion - no visible means of support! (easy to do, just be an artist and you'll HAVE no support!) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I am for any new good quest but not with those known characters - Hook and Grimmelshausen, but with some complete anonymous devised names. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I'm all for Hook and Captain Sparrow. Going to cause lots of fun! And we can put some music from the Hook and PotC movie in there to highten the fun. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Why, Rad? I think it's really cool. And, I mean, who WOULDN'T recognise Sparrow? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Quest sounds fun, Grimm! <img src="http://img246.echo.cx/img246/4327/thumbsupgrin5cp.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I think Sparrow always belonged to these Pirates of Caribbean even though he isn´t present in the game. But Hook? For me, this figure from the film is too absurd, fairytale and profaned. And Grimmelshausen is name which is used by one of us, so generally, if any nicks of us don´t figure in Builds, I think this tradition should be respected and abided. I think by this precaution some discords, bickerings, envy and indesirable negative ego states can be prevented from in the future. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Ah, but we have Fred Bob! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> And to mangle a phrase, "Everybody Loves Fred Bob"! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Ah, but we have Fred Bob!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Thanks that you mentioned it, Cat, so I don´t have to. And since I´m going to make the quest (provided I´ll find time in the foseeable future), I don´t see why I shouldn´t include my alter ego in it. Call me vain, egocentric, whatever, I´ll agree, I am. Apart from that, it´s pretty unlikely somebody else is going to use the name Grimmelshausen as his own character´s name.

And as we have the Sparrow model kindly provided by Pieter <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> , I don´t see why we shouldn´t use it. As for Hook, well, his model still has both hands, so maybe we wouldn´t call him Hook, but model his character after him (or after Bartholomew Roberts, for that matter, so I could call him Bartholomew Roberts, which would be historically inaccurate and thus gets me the historians here on my neck). It´s just the oportunity of having two totally different characters joining together. I love the dialogues between Blaze and Danielle, but after the main quest there aren´t any more of that, so we need somebody else doing the verbal fighting <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> .

<!--QuoteBegin-v_Grimmelshausen+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(v_Grimmelshausen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And as we have the Sparrow model kindly provided by Pieter  <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->There was always one in the Build. I just added a better one made by Kodo Boon. So thanks to him! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

And we've got mentions of the godfather of the archipelago too, Rad. The notorious Nathan Kell. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

I know, but I met this Sparrow only once at tailor. I thought rather he doesn´t play in any quest a substantial role. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I haven´t ever met him ingame yet, I thought his was just a skin that can be bought a the tailor shop. But then again, so far I´ve only played with B12.0 installed on op of B11 without any other updates.

Yes, he is just a skin. Nothing else. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> I, personally, would welcome the addition of Sparrow in the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Well, the usual answer is: toggleability !
Make this quest for those of us who want to play it, and who doesn't like it can switch it off.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing anyone's alter ego in a quest - but Grim, you might want to give us some background on who Grimmelshausen is (not everybody will know Simplicissimus).

Toggleable? Do it if you want to, don't if you don't, I would say. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

By the way, I wrote about Grimmelshausen in the "Your Ship and Character" in the Gameplay section.

And I agree with Rico so far (please remember, this is still nothing more than a weird late-evening-after-long-day idea, I´m not even in the "blank paper" stage, just considering whether starting this is worth the trouble at all), it´ll go like the Claire Larouse quest, you can deny to pull it at a couple of points.
