Need Help question bout "trinkets"

the trinkets in the old game of AoP CAS like:
totems, idols, green emerald, cross, ring, and those that gave you + in your stats of luck, stealth, ect. those are worthless now, except to just sell to the traders? the new ones are in the "books" you find that increase your skills?

Yes finding books will increase your skills- It doesnt make sense to look at a ruby and feel 10 times stronger.

TY ok another question, how come my reputation stays in the toilet, i do gov, church, shipyard missions, and im still stuck @ swindler. i dont go overtime on gov's ive killed robbers/skeletons, (BTW them skeletons arent as wimpy as the non upgrade, and kicked my a$$ bout 6x's before i was able to defeat them once.) and the crew loyalty hardly tends to rise, so what do i do?
