Questions about the Automatic Skills Up System

How do you initiate the Automatic Skills System??

And booby traps do really insignificant damage. About 5% of my health at lvl 3, although I turned them off (put 34 in lock picking) just because it's not very realistic that you get enflamed when you open a chest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

The Auto Skill System is enabled by default in the Build 14 Alpha 5 version, but it's not in Build 13 at all.

When you play with it, can you still modify your skills the way you like? Can you explain me how does it work? It increases your skills at every level up depending what "profession" you've taken right?

no, your profession let's two skills increase faster than the others. which two depends on your profession. all the other skills increase according to what you are doing, such as combat skill increasing when you do damage in a sword fight.

i'd indeed recommend increasing the speed. i have it at 70 now, and it seems to be about right. of course, it could always go faster. if you turn up the speed, the level/skills comparison does get better.

By talking to people, playing quests and indeed gambling in taverns. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

pieter, i think it would be handy to post that list of skill increase activities you made here.

Leadership:
- Talking to people
- Playing quests
- Paying salary
Fencing:
- By swordfighting
Sailing:
- Storms and twisters
- Fighting sea battles
Accuracy:
- By firing your pistol (most effective)
- By firing your cannons (less effective)
Cannons:
- Fighting sea battles
- By firing cannons and hitting enemy ships
Grappling:
- By boarding
Repair:
- Repairing during sea battles
- Repairing at shipyards
Defence:
- By swordfighting
- By failing to open chests
- Repairing during sea battles
- Repairing at shipyards
Commerce:
- By trading
Luck:
- Talking to people
- Playing quests
- Playing tavern games

i think that accuracy increases pretty slowly while fireing you psitol. i haven't had even 1 percent increase so far!

does leadership really increase by paying salary or by deviding the plunder?

You can increase your Defense by failing to open chests???? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

And your Repair skill increases by repairing ships at the shipyard evn though you don't repair it by yourself then? (OK, forget this, I know there aren't any other ways to increase it except for Quick Repairs but they aren't very fast and common)

well, actually it isn't directly failing to open chests, but taking damage that gives you the defence.

yes, that's a bit odd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> but it has to increase in some way. i wouldn't be surprised if it would increase when you crew would be killed as well.

I was about to say it would be realistic if it increased when your ship takes cannon fire....after all...the more you get shot at the quicker you learn to cover up.....maybe also when you take pistol fire?

i'm certain that you already get defence from taking pistol fire. remember: ANY type of damage done to the player.

You don't get skill increases for any type of damage done for the player. Only for failing to opening chests. It might be weird, but that's how it is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

wha? pieter, that is one seriously messed up post. in case you didn't get my meaning, i figured out that you sometimes get an increase in defence by getting hit. it is calculated by a total of hitpoints substracted from the players health. the increase in combat skill once in a while occurs when the player has done a certain total amount of damage to the enemy. so if the player does a combined damage of 300, he gets 1% extra combat skill, after which the count to 300 starts over. at least, that's how i think it works.

Woops. Edited now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

This only applies to the Auto Skill System: You use your skills and you gain a couple of percent increases every now and then. Once you got up to 100%, you will gain a skill point.

if you choose to use this system, you will experience a very long loading time for a new game, and it will take much longer to increase your skills. it would be a good idea to turn up the skill increase rate in the buildsettings to at least double the original speed.

i found a bug with this system: every time you are about to level up, you wont. it is as if the transition to the next character level is an invisible wall for you XP increase. when one of your officers gets some XP on his own account, by killing somone for instance, the bug dissapears and you ge up a level. however, the bug is back again when you are about to go to the next level again.

NOTE: it does say that you get XP, but it isn't added to your character. i think that this might have something to do with not getting extra skill points when you go up a level. i know you shouldn't get them with RPG mode, but it might be causing the bug. as long as you know how to work around it however, it isn't a problem.
