Random crashes

Argh!! to all ya pirats!

I'm new to these forums, and in need of assistance! I get random crashes (to desktop) from Build 13 Final. Usually the crash occurs when there is an event change (like the Twister, or moving from the world map to sea view). But it sometimes occurs even when I have just loaded the game which starts, for example, in Greenwich port. Then I walk to the boat and enter the ship and... CTD!

This does not happen in the Vanilla game. Could someone have a resolution for this? My specs are above the minimum reqs (in case of someone puts that in question <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />, and I have been playing without BuildSet- and Gunpowder mod (in ships).

Best regards,
Elsilhe

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Elsilhe and welcome to the forum.

Since you are using Build 13 Final, I'm pretty sure this will work.
In your POTC\Program\WorldMap\worldmap.c file use notepad or other editor to change the
#define MAPSPEED setting at the top of that file from 0.6 to 1.0

Thank you for your rapid answer!

It almost seemed like it worked, but no. Same thing happened, when I was smuggling bricks from Redmond to Oxbay. I moored at Far Beach, and when swimming to the beach, I remembered: "Damn, I should have taken some rowdy men with me, never know about these smugglers..." And then, when I swam back to the ship (and the "event screen" popped up), the game crashed to desktop. And of course I had not saved for a long time, so... very fustrating!

Everything woks just nice and smooth, but this crashing is kind of a downer. I'm yet to see the twister :) So...any other suggestions?

You can try to <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">enable error logging</a> and show us the compile.log, system.log and possible error.log that is generated in the main game directory. Hopefully those might give a clue.

Welcome to the forum, by the way! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

those are things that just seem to happen. they did so in the stock game too, but far less. i'd recommend saving every time you enter and before you leave a port, and keep the save before as a seperate file to use as a backup, for when the save goes bad, which rarely happens now, but just in case. i've been using this system it works just fine.

I've gotta try this. I'm using B13 Final and all my crashes seem to happen when I'm on the world map. The game will just freeze for a second, then crash. It seems to only occur right after a battle, and more often after a battle in which I captured some ships.

Thought maybe I'd kick this back to the top for anyone else having this problem. I'll let you know if it works for me.

Does the crash happen at midnight? If so, try dumping a bit of the cargo aboard all your ships prior to going to the worldmap.

I'm not positive but I think it was still daytime. I did read another topic on this (somewhere on here...) but I'm 99% sure I wasn't over the cargo limit on my ships before I exited to the world map. And it's happened to me (twice now) where I captured ships and exited to the world map just fine, sailed around for a few days, had another combat, exited out to the world map without capturing any new ships or picking up cargo, and Bam! CTD. The only thing any different about exiting was that I had taken a few barrages so maybe my crew dropped below the minimum limit on one of my ships, causing an error?

I don't know but you can bet I'm going to start really paying attention to the details before exiting from 3D sail from now on, this error is getting very irritating and if I can help isolate the cause, I will.

One thing I have noticed for sure is that the ctd happens more often when I cap trade ships than when I cap warships. And it only happens from immediately after to shortly after exiting from an encounter (by encounter I mean 3D sail with ships present that are not under my command, I have not experienced the error after going to 3D sail just to change my flag for example.)

I only use a sloop or war schooner (although I cap anything with a good cargo and occasionally a class 1 or 2 warship), only fight in the daylight hours, have signed articles with my crew, do not autobuy, do not move cargo around when I capture ships, only crew (and occasionally cannon), and generally fly only the jolly roger.

I'm running a clean build 13 Final with no add ons, and my system is way over spec.

Is this still an issue for B14 or just a B13 Final bug? I don't remember this happening with B12, although that was a while back and my memory is a tad hazy.

Errrm... incidentally, I've been discarding a bunch of cargo to get the load down to less than 90% of what each ship SHOULD be able to hold before going back to the world map, and I haven't had a crash since.

So, once again, my hat is off to you Pieter. You were right.

It still doesn't make sense though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

It does make SOME sort of sense, but it's still a pretty bad bug that needs to be fixed then. Thanks for checking this. Please continue doing this so that we can be sure that this indeed IS the problem.
