Well, my first post, might as well ask away.

I got AoP today, installed it and patched it, all ok.
Now, I had played Sea Dogs before so I thought, generally speaking, that sea combat would be the same but this is what happened:

I'm approaching a caravel, she's within my ship's range, my cannons are loaded, I press the space bar... nothing happens. I press again. Nothing happens. I check my key bindings, all okay, get back into the battle, i press the space bar, nothing happens. Then, a few seconds later, one of my cannons fires. I press the space bar a couple more times and with some delay (5-8 seconds) my cannons eventually fire.
Is this because I have no officer in charge of gunnery or my skills are too low or is this the way it's intended to be?

Cheers and thanks in advance for any replies.

Welcome aboard, Silva! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />
The answer to your question is probably "all of the above". If you have no gunnery officer and your own "Cannon" skill is low, then your guns will fire slowly and one at a time. Only if your "Cannon" skill has been significantly improved or you've hired a gunner with a good "Cannon" skill will you get concentrated broadsides. Basically, you don't know much about cannons other than they go "Bang" and neither do your crew. There's nobody to give them all a single order to "Fire!", so they all eventually finish loading, take what they think is some sort of aim at the target, and fire when they think they're ready. One of them might even hit something other than waves. This is how it's intended to be. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

There is a bug whereby even if the other ship is hostile, in range and in one of your firing arcs, pressing the spacebar while in 3rd person view occasionally won't fire the cannons at all. In this case you just have to go into 1st person view, imagine yourself giving the gunnery officer a smack, then take over personal command of the guns for a while. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/slap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":slap" border="0" alt="slap.gif" />

Nosie: why is the ship in your signature picture showing a distress signal? Take a close look at the Union Jack... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Thanks for the replies.
Still, compared to say, Sea Dogs, the auto aiming, when watching the ship from the outside, and even with a a higher skill at aiming and cannons, the guns tend to miss. ANd I do mean MISS, like 80% of the time.

Probably I just suck at it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I have had this problem before with auto firing, its actually rather irritating because another bug is that sometimes autofire will target a ship behind the one that your intending to shoot at!
