Realistic cannons idea

Merciless Mark

Build mod - Master Gunner
Storm Modder
I had an idea, its a theoretical possibility, but it would be a major project.
i came to think of somones post on how to make new more detailed cannons, after pondering i came up with a grand and perhaps quite possible idea

Cannon calibers and cannon types mod, yep we have that but not what im thinking, im thinking like seperate compleate models for each cannon type, a 6 pounder would for instance be the size and look like a 6 pounder, and a 32 pounder would be large and look like one.

So how does one accomplish this?
Remember the thread on lanterns? we came to the conclusion that adding lights may be possible with locators, wich we still need to figure out how to implement, but once we do that, we may be able to do a mod like this here.

The cannons on ships are defined by locators, so what if we rewrite the cannon system, apply one standard cannon locator to a cannon model, and then we could place special locators on the decks on the hull for the cannon models
As a result, each gun would be a seperate object of the ship, and we could even have visually cannons being lost.
And another idea may also be possible if this could be implemented, Recoiling cannons that roll back slightly when fired.

What is involed?
It would be a major undertaking, we would need to write a whole new chunk of code to the cannon managment system. that alone is a major undertaking
After that, we would have to edit every single ship released and strip them down of their guns
New cannon models may have to be made, there are some stock models in some of the scenes that we could work from, but there would still be a need for new models.

So... once again, im no good programmer or anything, just hatching another idea, is it a good or bad one? ill let you ppl be the judge of that <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

hmm, I really interested of it..
I think we could better make, the same ships bud with orther cannons on it.. like
all frigates are the same model!
frigate 1 -> 6ibs
frigate 2 ->12 ibs
frigate 3 -> 36 ibs
with some little help with locators and stuff, I would like to try this.

are you thinking, one model per cannon type? like for one ship it has multiple models but with diffrent cannon caliber and the model loaded depends on the armament?

i dunno, while that is probally easier to do it does have some setbacks,

1.) it would waste alot of space, the ships model folder is already over 50 megs
2.) it would take alot more work properly positioning the guns and relocating locators to match
3.) any possibility of recoil rollbacks would not exist
4.) visually destroyed cannons would not be possible

yeah thats true...
bud I dont know any orther solution <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />:modding

"You" dont know any solution, but others may

and did you even read the whole post? what i posted there is all theoretically possible

I somehow found this thread and it intrigued me.

How does one go about stripping the cannons off the ships and forts? Is there a way to do it in TOOL? Or does one have to open the model in Max (or whatever) and remove the models manually polygon by polygon?

I've already created a Long 6 pounder (It's not quite done yet) and it's a simple process to make the others....

Here is a picture of it with just dummy textures on it. I already have it in-game (using CCC's buildingset), but this is not the in-game picture.

That looks very nice. Bug perhaps too detailed. If you put hundreds of those in one scene, the polygon count raises to such high numbers that the game might not be able to handle it.

You can try opening the ship's GM files and see what you can do with Inez' tool. If you have no luck with that, you can try exporting the files to VRML and importing them into 3DS MAX and make the change. Then do the same, only in reverse to get the model back ingame.

Also: We don't know how to put a new model on a new locator. So I don't know how to make the cannon model be based on the current calibre of the ship... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Aye, I realize now that the models of cannons have nothing to do with how they are fired. It is all up to the locators in the scene. So in order to replace cannon models, I would have to import each scene into Max and exchange them there.

I made a gun too, but i have problems with realistic wooden texture. You have expierince with wood ?
My goal is not for a game engine <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Nice cannon! Somebody once showed my <a href="http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/ww_overview.htm" target="_blank">this</a> link. I haven't got the slightest idea what the program does exactly, but it has something to do with 3D modeling and wood textures. You might want to check it out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Oh thanks, i go now train with this tool =) .

I like your cannon too! Great modelling!
If I may make a suggestion though, the barrel of the cannon seems a bit too long for the carriage. It could just be the perspective of the picture you posted, but it looks like the barrel would probably tip the whole thing front-wise unless it was firmly roped down.

Nice texture too!
