Rethinking the DeMasting Mod

As it stands now (I've been starting a lot of threads with that phrase) to bring down a mast you have to hit it with the required number of round, chain, or bomb shot, and it comes down. What I propose is that we look at a way to, instead of bringing down the entire mast, carry away a yard.

I assume that there could be a way to do it too, if you can tell the game to register hits to the yards, not just the masts. Once the yard has been hit the correct number of times (discussed later) the yard .gm could be replaced by the purse.gm. The purse.gm is a small model for the little bags of gold found around the archipelego. It is small enough, that is actually placed "inside" the mast, and cannot be seen. I doubt, however, that we could show the yard falling to the sea.

One requirement is that we would need to code the different running capabilities provided by each yard and sail. However, to link this idea to another thread concerning realistic sailing... once each individual sail is coded to affect the running of the ship, we would be closer to individually selecting which sails to set, rather than just heave to, battle sails, and full sail.

Possible? Thoughts? Let's brainstorm.

I like the idea! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

What would happen to the sail when the yard is carried away?

What if the yard has the sail furled or is in the process of raising or lowering sails?

If we can have the mast WITH the yard falling into the sea, can we eliminate the mast from that action to show just the yard falling into the sea?

Or could we do some kind of similar action like when you lose the bowsprit, only it would be the yardarm instead?

Well, I don't know what would happen. I think that since the locator is on the yard, the sail would go away. For example, if you replace the yard with a different .gm, the sail is gone. This would take someone a lot smarter than me to figure out.

Well, I was just asking in a theoretical sense - trying to bubble up the coding geniuses (i.e., not me, LOL!) to come forth with an answer or two! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The problem here is that I'm not sure we _can_ do `on-the`-fly GM swapping, let alone modify `mast-fall` code. But they're great ideas, and as we all learn more we may be able to implement them.
