We're having a bit of a problem deciding on the colour scheme for Royal Navy ships in our game. This is mainly caused by the HMS Interceptor and HMS Dauntless being blue-and-yellow in the first PotC film as opposed to them being black-and-yellow as would be more historically accurate. This is clearly seen on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wperez/85067228/" target="_blank">this</a> photo. Realistically, RN ships should be black-and-yellow and EITC ships should be black-and-yellow with wider black stripes as seen <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=11220&view=findpost&p=232462" target="_blank">here</a>.

So that gives us several options:
<b>- All RN ships black-and-yellow, including Dauntless and Interceptor - All EITC ships black-and-yellow with wider black stripes</b>
<i>This would be the most realistic, but would run contrary to the colours of the Dauntless and Interceptor in the first film. Also it would make the Dauntless and Endeavour virtually identical.</i>
<b>- All RN ships black-and-yellow, excluding Dauntless and Interceptor - All EITC ships black-and-yellow with wider black stripes</b>
<i>This would still be realistic, but with an exception for the Dauntless and Interceptor to keep them looking as in CotBP and keep a clear difference with the Endeavour.</i>
<b>- All RN ships blue-and-yellow - All EITC ships black-and-yellow</b>
<i>This would not be really realistic, but there would be a very clear difference between the RN ships and EITC ships and would not run contrary to the films.</i>

Personally I'd vote gameplay and movie accuracy over historical realism here, so I'd go with the third option. Players will be able to clearly distinguish between RN and EITC ships and the colour scheme would be accurate to what is seen in the films.

I am on the contrary side on this matter, as I dont want to play PotC like in the movie, but as a realistic sailing game. Therefore, my vote goes for option 1. What a close run so far! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerbz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nerbz" border="0" alt="nerbz.gif" />

I agree with Pieter, a lot of players would probably prefer knowing which ships to shoot at (or not to shoot at) then historical accuracy.

Unrelated note: I finally decided on a name for my ship! ^^

My thoughts exactly. One thing I always loved about the Build mod is that I could play it like a (semi-) realistic pirate sandbox game and avoid the movie stuff as much as possible. Okay, ship colours is certainly small thing but it certainly belongs to the "movie stuff".

So, option number one for me. And for the "which ships to shoot at" thing: well, thats what flaggs are for. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The main problem I have with the first option is that the Dauntless and Interceptor would need to be changed from their film looks, which would again be annoying for those people who do want the film influence. So I think that if the poll remains as evenly balanced as it is now, we should go with neither of the main chosen options, but with #2 instead. Which I wouldn't particularly mind, because it'd mean the least possible amount of retexturing work, because that's how it is already. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

Ooops, didn´t read the 2nd option properly, sounds good to me, too.
We´ll meet these ships only in movie quest missions anyway, right?

Unless somebody intends to have them randomly encounterable as well. But that'd look really weird as only blue-and-yellow ships between the other RN black-and-yellow ships.

i'll wait for a while with my vote, seeing how the discussion turns out. convince me!

Well its dependant on several factors, including gameplay and personal prefrence.

There are people who use this mod because they like historical accuracy and realisim, however there are also those who play it as a game, using simmilar paintjobs for Royal Navy and East India Trading Company ships could hamper gameplay as it would make them difficult to discern from one another, assuming it is possible to be allies with one and not the other. Other wise that arguement just falls apart.

Of course there also people who will want this game because they believe it will be like the movie, I'm not sure whether these people are in the majority or minority, but I guess it's the latter rather than the former, so having the Dauntless and Interceptor as individual ships is purely a personal preference, perhaps a toggle in buildsettings?

As for the flags arguement, some may want to tell instantly, instead of having to fiddle with the zoom, or waste time going to spy glass view with all the fusses that follow.

So basically it's all up to what you want. (I tried to make this impartial, sorry if it isn't)

Yes that thing goes for me too like you said ..in other words - Persuade me (Jack's speak here). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I voted RN blue with yellow. But I think it is better if they are black with yellow, but with a blue stern and fore castle, just like the dutch ships have their green stern etc.

That sounds interesting. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I'm sorry I can't be of any help here.

Frankly I'd like to see them all barnacle and seaweed covered.
Not because the are cursed or magical, but because I will sink them all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

And i would like to see every ship's weak points marked with "X" because I will sink them all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

(lol <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />)

What if we went with option 1 and then made two additional versions of the <i>Dauntless</i> and <i>Interceptor</i>? This way, we'd keep the film influence (made optional through a toggle) and also have a nice RN first rate and brig to use as generic ships.

As long we're talkin' about realism, it is my understanding that PotC is set before any unified color scheme was decided for RN, right? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And I voted for RN ships bein' yellow&blue.

I think option 2, if we somehow make the film quests optional, then those who want historical realism don't ever see The Dauntless and The Interceptor.

Cant decide weather to take the gold or the silver eh?

My advice. Take both.

Make both and let people download what they prefer. More work but everyone is happy.

I'd love two so I can choose to play POTC movie or realistic sailing mod. Depending on my mood.

Savvy? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

That'd be double the amount of work though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The poll is being surprisingly evenly balanced for now. That doesn't really make things any simpler. I hope we get some more votes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Would you want a black-and-yellow reskin of the Dauntless as well? Because the Endeavour is also black-and-yellow, of course, and the same model.

Because those ships being quest-only is already some kind of toggle ensuring that people who don't want to see them won't see them.
