Running Lights

Admiral8Q

Troublesome Corsair
What ever happened to running lights mod for the ships at night? I remember back durring Build 7 people we're talking about adding them to the next mod. Was this ever decided against for any reason?

yeah, i noticed that some game has lights in the ship during the night and this game dont....it would solve our problems battling at night....

eh, what? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

PotC can't even do that due to engine limitations.

It's AoP and newer that have 'running' lights on the ships. They are supposed to actually be simulated lanterns/candles on the ships, usually on the tops of the masts, ends of the yards and at the bow and stern of the vessels.

Don't remember anyone ever even trying to add lights to the ships in PotC.

But then I could be very wrong about that.

I have no clue how to add lights to ships in PotC.
I think they're locators in AoP, but the AoP ships put in PotC don't have them.
Obviously the Storm 2.0 engine doesn't support it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
Haven't got a clue how the people working on Build 7 were planning to add it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

well, we cant loose our hopes yet....if you were able to create so many things for this game, im sure someone will discover a way to bring light to us <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/readon.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="readon.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Oh! That was pun'y! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I saw screenshots of the lights added to the ships. I would think it would not be any harder then adding a lantern in 1rst person mode.

The game engine doesn't support lights on ships as far as I know.
Storm 2.5 does though.
However, people have been doing things I would never have believed possible.
For example CCC's DirectSail mod and Pirate_KK's recent work on flags.
So I will not say it ISN'T possible, but I don't know of any way to do it.
And I think the same applies to our other modders right now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Personally I hated the night lights in the short time I played AoP. Since they couldn't be put out. Seriously, what merchant would have his lanterns shining like a beacon while a 42 gun frigate sent him to davy jones from 600 yards away? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Wow, that's what i call bad experience in the life....

but it doesnt matter if the lights were on or off, the AI of the frigate would find you anyway, am i not correct? (i never played AoP :p)

The lights look nice on the stern, but the ones in the masts look silly to me.
And indeed it'd be nice if they could be extinguished.
The AI can still find you in the dark and in the fog as if it were light in PotC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Thinking about that, is it possible to make the AI to have a limited vision like us in storms, fogs and nights?

I'm pretty sure most of the AI is hard-coded in the DLL's and the only way we'll get any of that is with permission from Akella unless one of our serious code-monkeys figures out how to open and modify them.
