runtime error

Ahoy hoy,
I know loads of people have posted about this problem, but has anyone solved it?
the game loads as far as the spinning wheel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> then freezes, or says runtime error.

i tried the game on amd athlon with nvidia gforce 256 and on an intel 2.0 with 900+ graphics memory. same result on both.
I also tried all versions of the game including the mod and the 5 updates.

anyone have any hacks up their sleaves? any sneaky file tweeks people use to get the game going?

Is your GeForce 256 <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce256.html" target="_blank">this thing</a>? If so, it's ancient - it dates back to 1999! I would advise getting a graphics card which was actually made this century, preferably something less than 3 years old. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

You don't say what graphics hardware is in the Intel 2.0, but if it's similar vintage to the GeForce 256, it won't work either. If it's built into the motherboard, it probably won't work. My previous card, a <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce4ti.html" target="_blank">GeForce 4 Ti 4200</a>, did work, although it slowed down badly when certain details had to be shown. So I'd probably reckon on that being the absolute minimum you'd want to use.

its not that old! its a gforce6200 with 256mb ddr2 ram. but thats irelavant now as i got it working all on my own. Actually I installed the no dvd patch and that solved it - how daft do i look now. (i hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem) only trouble is, the text conversations dont work. DOH (i'll detail this new problem in a fresh post)

I thought that you might have meant a GeForce card of some sort with 256MB RAM, but went looking for a literal "GeForce 256" in case such a thing existed. The usual cause of "runtime error" is people using obsolete graphics cards, and the GeForce 256 is certainly in that category! The GeForce 6200 should be fine, though.

If you ran the game, had trouble, and <i>then</i> installed a NoDVD patch, it's likely that your machine has been infested with Starforce during the first run. Uninstall the game, then look at this web page to find out how to remove Starforce:
<a href="http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php" target="_blank">http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php</a>

(It won't take long doing either a search on this forum or a general Google search to find out why you don't want Starforce! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sick.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eww" border="0" alt="sick.gif" />)

Once you've cleaned up the PC, reinstall from DVD, then you have two choices. You can try the <a href="http://www.galaxyproductions.net/downloads/aopsupermod.html" target="_blank">Supermod</a> plus all five updates. (Supermod includes a NoDVD patch so, if you're going to use Supermod, you don't need to install a separate one.)

Or you can get the official <a href="http://www.playlogicgames.com/downloads/index.php?id=ageofpirates" target="_blank">version 1.50 patch</a>, plus a suitable NoDVD patch. Make sure you get a patch which is intended for version 1.50. I used the one from <a href="http://www.gamecopyworld.com" target="_blank">www.gamecopyworld.com</a>.

Out of interest, which NoDVD patch did you use?
