Maybe a little less common, weak and uninteresting though.

That's the reason why I had problem with Horatio it's because of this when you recruit by questing the hp of the officer go up only by 2 per rank and not by 10 as a normal random officer do.

Maybe it's my game that is bug to been playing a lot with those file that it won't impress me but even with a fresh install of the game and the build 13 I still got that problem. Anyone notice that?
....<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I wasn't aware of that ! That is most interesting! Now I'm really curious, so I'll do some file reading as soon as I get home.
I have always "flanked" this issue by defining the characters to my liking in "Fred Bob" stile. When they came with sufficient HP to be really usefull in the first boardings and sufficient skills to man the first prizes, the subsequent development went unnoticed once the main character developed itself... and enemies surrendered.
Good with this heads up!

A lot of loose ends are still in the mods exactly the way they were in the abruptly released stock game.
As Morgan also told you the reference of Rys promissing to introduce you to somebody is a dead end example of this unfinished and unpolished stuff.
I wouldn't know what the correct way is. It may even show up to be yours.
Besides any work on these issues is most welcome

Very well then,
I'll submit to your examination!
Rys has been banned from a ship because he slap an officer over a girl.
Considering Rys' skills, abilities and hitpoints, it is almost beyond belief... that he dared and still be walking afterwards... but never the less that's the story from a reliable source, if we consider the harbormaster a trustworthy man... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

So yes, fight, girl, the mysterious introduction ( maybe to the unused intriguing character with the wooden leg, back at the bridge to the jail inside town... now that's an offered idea , sorry:)), there is an entire reference left unused.

Hope I passed the test!

Besides, what's wrong with offering ideas.
Keep them coming, says I!

Rys goes out on another quest to get his girl back. there are several options here:

getting her back by sea, a bit like the Toff's daughter quest.

getting her back at another island, at the officer there. maybe FDF, though the officer there is already used in two quests, so it may not be the best character to use.

getting her back from a port that is hostile towards england, and requires sneaking into town. now that i think of it, FDF also fits this, but two quest with such girls are also already based upon FDF. another would really be over-using the island. i'd prefer to use an island now unused for any quests, such as guadeloupe.

getting her back on the island itself. being in an argument with a commander could most certainly create issues, quite possibly with you as well instead of Rys. also, if the fort would be acessable, the fort's commander could be an interesting option, because of the danger involved.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

This isn't bad at all either!

An extended Rys Bloom quest? Sounds good to me! All new and improved quests are welcome. I don't particularly care about the story, as long as it's interesting and makes some sense. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

my ideas are pretty rough though. they really need some tweaking, so tweak away, i'd say! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I pretty much agree with creating a Rys Bloom quest. As it is it sure looks unfinished and frustrating for the player.
However, I don't think we should focus on the 'girl story', and we shouldn't make it look like 'Taugh's daughter' or 'the girl won in a cardgame' quests. I wouldn't want Rys to become an in-love romantic hero who've lost his beloved. I would prefer that event to be the conclusion of a long issue between him and the officer : they couldn't stand each other for a mysterious reason that could be the key point of the quest, the officer being hierarchicaly superior was abusing of his power knowing Rys had no rights to fight back, and the day that officer tried to bully a women that Rys liked, in front of him and just because he knew that Rys liked her, Rys just lost his nerves.

There are three aspects that could be developped :
- what buisness Rys had to settle at land with 500 gold
- the good deal he tells you about
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I know someone who'll pay very good money to anyone who can spare him certain chores. \nIf you help me I'll introduce you to him. He trusts me and I'm sure you'll suit him perfectly.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
- the bad story with the officer

Vasn't Rys banned from shipping after beating an officer? Maybe we should have a quest where the officer comes with some strong brutes and arrest Rys? At least have that officer a parto of the quest <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

The officer comes for revenge, and Rys is just going to use the money for something special, maybe a treasuremap, or gun. Then the officer with his bullies come along and beat Rys up, WHILE the girl is watching. Rys challenge the officer for a duel outside the townwalls. Rys gets injured during the fight, and you take over from him, dueling the officer and slaughter him. Rys is nursed by the girl he loves, says goodbye and you can set sail.

(maybe the girl should be the Redmond barmaid?)

@ttt: it doesn't really sound like the player actually takes part in the story. it's a good story, but the player mostly watches, which can make the quest a bit dull.

Is there a reason why you can not modify Rys Bloom characteristic in the Officers.c file?

This is Rys Bloom original coding:

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    makeref(ch,Characters[n]);            //Rys Bloom
    ch.old.name = "Rys";

In my Hornblower quest I decide to use Rys and as you see I give him a few things and fix is skills for the incoming quest. But the problem is that I got an error and I don't see what's causing it.

When I start a new game the loading screen freeze, I don't even have the chance to see Malcolm. When I look at the error log I found those:

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->COMPILE ERROR - file: characters\init\officers.c; line: 736

and this is the line 736 in Officers.c file:

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->ch.name                 = LanguageConvertString(tmpLangFileID,"Rys");<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

for the monks.c and characters.h those error are the repercussion of the error in the Officers.c file but I don't see what's the error if you compare both codes they are the same the only thing I could think of is that there another code elsewhere that prevent to modify Rys.

You should be able to change that just fine. I recommend you reset the original file, start the game to check if it works again, then make your changes again manually. There is no reason why it shouldn't work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Yea I know, I done that to. I change a single line and start the game. I did that until all the line are in place in my code and now it's ok. It's like the game didn't like the sudden change in the code and force me to input line by line. Man my PC is 'cocky' and you guys were saying that your pc was acting weird sometime well can I join the club???

Sure you can join. Do you still have the original changed file that caused the problem? Might be interesting to perform a WinMerge on the version that wasn't working and the one that does work so that you can see the differences and figure out why it didn't work. There must be some sort of reason. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

They are the same, that's the 'cocky' side of my PC. That's the reason why I was wondering how come it didn't work. So now the code in the file is the same as the code that were not working but now it's work. Strange isn't it?

Very strange indeed. There MUST be a difference SOMEWHERE though. There MUST BE!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Is it possible that I corrupt the file somehow?
