Sailor's Stories

Luke159

Buccaneer
Storm Modder
I managed to take 2 war ships and was doing some nice trading but it wasn't to last, a group of pirates attacked me, it was a fleet of 8 ships. 4 Brigs, 1 war ship, 1 Corvette and 2 Luggers. I sank the 2 Luggers easily and damaged one of the Brigs but the other ships was busy attacking my other ship which they sunk. I fired at the damaged Brig but didn't do as much damage as i would have liked. I needed to increase the cannoneers skill which i was trying to do till these pirates came a long.

In the end i had lost half my crew and boarded one Brig which i sank due to the amount of damage it had taken from the battle already, i sailed as fast as i could away from the ships, the wind was with me for a change and i was making good distance, the pirates war ship was the only ship able to keep to my speed and we traded a few shots at one another but in the end the pirates gave up, i had lost half my gold due to the lose of that war ship which was full of cargo. I will have to make sure i remain in a fast ship like the Corvette

That was the biggest amount fleet i've come across in this game so far, anyway with this been the latest pirate game on the market and with it looking to be one of the best base games around i was woundering if you think this is the best pirate game since POTC or if your going to wait till the moders get hold of it and improve it?

I'm playing this game and i like the game but i wish there was more cannoneers around it seems i can never find enough to really effect the speed of my reload times, its faster but not fast enough or it was faster till i lost half my crew in that battle with those damn pirates.

For me i liked the fact that you could take on any crew and still give the enemy a good battle, the new feature of cannoneers, sailers and fighters is a nice addition and adds more strategy to the game, what i don't like about this game so far is the fact that its darker than POTC, and the ships in the distance are alway's white shapes not like how they should be seen, i know its not my computer specs because this computer easily meets recomended requirements.

8 ships? That's totally unfair cause you can only have a maximum of 5 ships!
Luckily, I use a bug to flee from enemies.
If one of those bastards is following you on the world map, wait till he gets close enough untill you see the grappling hook and immediately press space to start the battle.
If you've done it right, the enemy should be far away (more than 850m) so you can press space to get back to the world map. The enemy has vanished and you can continue travelling.
Another option is to flee to a friendy fort which hates your follower. Then they will give them a warm welcome. Those guys in the fort also need some target practicing.

Oh yeah, luring enemies to forts is one of my favorite pastimes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I let them get hammered for a while, then move in for the kill. Or capture, rather.

Also, ships are only white in misty weather conditions. Granted, these are rather unrealistically common, but I've seen crisp clean ships on the horizon in COAS. But not often.

That's my favorite tactic too. Especially in the beginning where i don't stand a chance

I should have taken a screenshot of the ships, i was shocked the message said 2 ships so i wasn't too bothered but it was a long line of ships coming out of the fog, in the end i counted 8 ships, i didn't hang around for more to arrive.

I will try that bug out thanks, and if that fails then i will try to make them follow me to a fort, then i can fire grape shots at them and then move in for the capturing of which ever ship(s) take my fancy lol.

If the mist is what makes the ships appear white and as you said its more common to see mist than to see clear day's which is unrealistic, is there a way to reduce the way the weather is produced so that misty weather is more like POTC is seen more commonly first thing on a morning than in the middle of the day, also i have noticed in every storm i've been in a tornado is somewhere around, i'm yet to find out what happens if one hits you but still thats unrealistic aswell. If we could some how reduce the chance of mist and storms been generated we should end up with a much more polished weather system, if that can't be done then perhaps fixing the way we see ships in bad weather.

I think that best thing for trading in begining, until u improve your and officers skills, is finding short route with exp-imp prices...U can find/pay for price lists...And when u improve skills try to capture few manowars, and make a strong fleet, cose manowars scares off enemy most off the time, and they have enormus cargo space so 1 route can make a VERY good proofit...
it also helps to find Rat god trinkets and share it among your captains

I'll tell you what happens if you are caught by tornado.
You meet davy jones locker <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/328_skull.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":328_skull:" border="0" alt="328_skull.gif" />

I had the sloop and then storm caught me, and now i don't have sloop any more <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

There be many people visiting davy jones i'll not be one of them i hope.

Thanks, i'll try to do some small time trading with the close posts till i can start to build my fleet then so that i can start improving my trade routes before improving my ships, would it be best if i use a Corvette myself and have the other ships in my fleet use the MOW's?

Does anybody have some tips on trading in the beginning??

I'm around level 5, ship is sloop. I have treasurer with both commerce and advanced commerce and trade skill around 50.
And still i can't make even one gold piece profit with trading.
Just for the example let say i'm to buy gold.

Port is exporting gold: price buy=600/sell=350
Most of other ports which imports gold have this price: b=1000/s=550.

This number are fictional because at the moment i don't have acces to the game.
I just can't seem to find some profitable trade route

Yeah, don't. Early on you just don't have the skills, and even if you had your small ship won't take enough cargo to make it worth the trip anyway. Later on you can actually make a tidy profit hauling stuff, but in the beginning it's exceedingly tedious and inefficient.

I understand that i don't have cargo hold large enough but that doesn't explain the trade prices.
As i said i have treasurer with skill 50 and both commerce and advanced commerce.
I would expect some better prices than that.

Yeah, well, obviously that's not enough, is it. Trade skill is very easy to build by capturing ships, stripping them bare, and selling them, though. You could also try and find some trade boosting trinkets.

and brandier needs a serious nerf, my ai captains always have this uncanny habit for closing in on ships with the brandier skill and lost the dog of war and the dutchman in one fight and the they were both near 100% armor plus the dutchman was a decent ways out and both got sunk.

otherwise they happily circle far out and pound ships if they do not have that annoying skill.

Ooch i guess you angry at loosing those two ships then? i know i would have been.

So the topic question, which game do you like the most, POTC or COAS? i don't know which i like the most, i find COAS to be some what darker but more graphical than POTC, while POTC is more action based meaning you can go out in a Sloop or as seen in this topic <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=11219&hl=" target="_blank">Captains Log</a> a Gunboat. I'm one that likes to be able to have fun right from the outset and POTC does in my opinion offer a longer play ablity factor.

COAS though adds more of a strategy eliment to the game, and as said already better graphics, i haven't got far enough into COAS yet to really make to many comments i could end up saying its better than POTC but for now i will save my judgement till i'm better aquipped with enough game play to make the right choice.

lol i reloaded the last save, but still kinda bugs where when ai ships dont have the skill my ai ships are shooting from way out from them, but if the ships have the imma blow up the powder room skill then my guys come rolling into boarding range even at times to get pwned.

then i was doing a port defense last night. and i notice the ai ships sails getting obliterated, which is cool and all except i want to sink them not board them and they heavy slow ships anyway, they had 2 manowars a battle ship or 2 and a few frigates. so i pull out my spyglass to see what my ai ships are shooting..round shot ok, round shot ok, chain shot.......my manowar 102 42 lb guns is using chain shot.......*facepalm*. i never seen any of my ship use anything but round shot unless they were out of it then they load whatever. but i had stocked him up with 3k rounds 4 k bombs 5k powder and maybe 1k of chain and grape and he is using the chain shot.

would not be nearly so bad if i did not have my manowar blow merchant ships from under me while i was trying to board with round shot, now when i want him to blow ship to davy jones locker he decides to use chain shot.

same battle 1 manowar down, my manowar is demasted to hades, but things are not going bad my dutchman is kicking some butt, my dog o war is doing nicely. but then my dog of war get dillusions of uberness and decided he is going to park broadside to broadside with the remaining manowar. at this point i am thinking oh crap that manowar is low and going to blow the powder room cause the entire time my dog was getting closer and closer, but instead he shoots a full broadside into the side of the dog and take off about 60% of its armor and sets the ship on fire in like 3 different places huzzah lol. so spamming the "sail away" command my dog seems none too bothered by this recent development and more of less sits there, ok maybe he was busy fighting the fires and tending to the ripped apart hull/ship/sailors but still point your ship away and set sails already....especcialy since the manowar is down to like 15% and could just decide to blow the powder room and wipe you and possibly my dutchman that had closed in from at less not the broadside to pound the manowar.

i loving the game lol but your ai ships just make wish you had a plank to walk some of their captains off of.

Since this talk doesn't have much to do with the thread title, is there anything you want me to change it to? Just to prevent any possible confusion.

threats! where! lol topic has kinda gone off on a tangent tho.

Threat? Woops... let's make that "thread". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
We can rename this thread to something like "Sailor's Stories" or something like that and start a new seperate CoAS vs. PotC Build Mod THREAD. ( <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" /> )
Having a listing of the CoAS positive and negative points and the ones of the Build Mod would be most useful,
both for developing the Build and also for a possible future port.
