Sea battle sounds

That is so cool! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Well done! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/monkeydance.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mi" border="0" alt="monkeydance.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/monkeydance.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mi" border="0" alt="monkeydance.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/monkeydance.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mi" border="0" alt="monkeydance.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/shoot.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shoot:" border="0" alt="shoot.gif" />

Very cool! I seem to have some trouble actually playing the file though. NO idea why. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Please continue your great work! I can't wait to test your ring-a-bell code! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Thank you all for your support!

Pieter: I can't really say why that sound did not play for you, unless you are missing some browser plugin. It is not, however, very much of a sound: it just plays ship bell ringing two times like this: "bling-bling"; you can very well imagine it! It's just there to show you that besides the coding, I really am working with the sounds, too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I must say, this is really rewarding work, as I can hear all the changes I make instantly by ear, so I definitely will continue (at least for my own satisfaction! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Now that ASVS mentioned it, I myself have stuck with the Build13 Final, which I'll probably use until the new build is ready <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />. What should I do when - in time - I want to publish all my work for public use? Could I just send the changed code files and the new sounds to someone who compiles the new Build so (s)he can put it in the current Build code, or what?

I very much want to give something back to you that you would enjoy, after all you've given to this game and to my own enjoyment! So please, let me hear your ideas of what would be cool to be heard while sailing, and I'll try my best to make it happen! Even if it would take some time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

PS. I'm still working on that "Ready to Board" sound...

I added you to the "Modders" usergroup now. I think you deserve as much. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

If you have something that is done, just put it up on the <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=10288" target="_blank">FTP</a> and we'll include it in the Build. It's a bit harder to add Build 13 code into the Build 14 Alpha, but as long as the code changes are simple, that shouldn't be much of a problem. In any case I would very much want to have your new sound work included. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Pirate_KK is the official modpack compiler now, but he'll be gone until half August. I used to be the Build 13 modpack compiler, but will be gone next week and will also be gone for six months starting this August. But by that time, Pirate_KK will be soon to return. So your work is sure to find it's way into the Build. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Thank you very much! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

I also have a holiday coming fast, and that means I can spend more time with the mod... at least if it's raining <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> (Finland's summer is very unpredictable) When I'll send stuff, I want it to contain at least something which could be called "a mod". I just hope I'll fill your expectations. But now that you compilers are gone for a holiday, I may have something to provide to you when you're back!

Best regards,
Elsilhe

PS. What do modders - especially Build compilers - prefer? Sending a one huge "mod package" or small changes in code at the time?

That way we can compare the whole game folder with your mod and make them compatible using WinMerge.

Very well. Thanks, Pieter!

This (attachment) is the latest version of the "Prepare for Battle" sound. Please tell me what you think!

Sounds good. The only thing I wonder about is what if the player is not playing as a British military officer? Do other militaries do the whole drum "beat to quarters" thing as well? And how about when the player is a pirate/privateer?

Yea thats what i'm wondering because I like playing as a Spanish naval officer. Other then that thou It sounds really good, the only thing that I don't like Is that the quality sounds a little bland. Good work thou we really need more modders on the team <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Yes, at the moment they certainly do. I have no idea what the other nations did on the sight of an enemy. This is the thing why I would love to know your thoughts of what SHOULD be heard! I'm a Finnish man, and I don't know much about traditions of any navy. But in any case, I believe all things you suggest can be done, as long as it not anything grotesque "Iwannaseeyourbloooooodcominoutofyourveinsblaaaah!"

I compressed the original sound file .wav to .mp3 to make it fit as attachment, but I hope it's not the original what makes it bland... in that case I'll have to move back to my workshop! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I came up with a thought that when <u>neutral or friendly</u> ships pass by each other at sea (when not in battle), they would salute each other by playing a national anthem of the neutral or friendly ships in question. My question is, what should these "anthems" be? I doubt that the current national anthems were in use back in the 17th-18th century. Perhaps some military/naval marches would be appropriate?

I think you could use British Grenadiers for the British and I think the Wilhelmus is already used in that period so you can use that for the dutch.

Thanks for the suggestions, Thomas!

If I'll just expand my vision... There wasn't a band in small ships; they were usually aboard higher ranking officers and bigger ships. So... if the Player ship class < let's say 2, it would only play a salute by drums and whistles; if the class is higher, THEN we'll play a salute with "the band", aka national anthem. What do you think?

I was thinking of such thing too, would be a bit weird if you get a whole band on your lugger <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

MAN!!!! I LOVE IT!!! YOU ARE DOING AN AMAZING JOB! AND WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!

I will try to place those sounds in my game aswell and try.

By the way, i guess the movie Master and Commander has a lot of good quotes that could and should be used for the British Navy ships.

The bell sounds and the "Beat to quarters" sound are all that i needed to kill the boredom here.

Coincidentaly, im now playing in the Royal Navy side, fighting for the British Crown with my character Captain Jack Aubrey and my beloved frigate, HMS Surprise.

It would be nice to have your command "Fire!" when you fire the guns. As far as i know, there are two or three different types of sounds when you fire the canons, one of them the crew yells, for some weird reason. But if you had some sounds of commands, like "All hands to your stations" and "Beat to quarters" it would turn the battles more cool. Ands event sounds during long trips call the boredom. I cant stand the background music anymore during my trips.

I was thinking that "Fire" -thingy myself; It would be realistic to have an officer shouting "Fire!" before the cannon blow.
But I realize now why there is no vocals in this game; It must be because it is very time-consuming work to do the vocals for <u>every</u> nation that is represented in the game! But I don't think that would stop us, right? I just need the sound files to every situation I work on in all languages, and - with your help - it will be done.

Now, im quite hopeless when i enter in different waters. I mean, i have no idea how to make the bell sound work every half hour as it is said. Can anyone guide me, please?

Well you shouldn't hear anything yet, unless you have made some coding and sounds by yourself <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I mean to say that I haven't published anything yet, all things that are discussed here reside only on my computer at the moment. Patience! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
