Sea Dogs Characters

Sea Dog
Think it was Nathan added Governur Brin from Seadogs to POTC,not quite sure how it was done,think he used a GM model close to Brin Maybe French Captain,and used textures from Seadogs which can be converted with SeaDogs CF converter to TGA files,thing is SD texture files for characters are a seperate file for each body parts,hat an such.rather than a single folder with a collage of body parts an clothing,than of course thar is the Head file as well,anyways I'd like some thoughts from anyone on how this was done as I'd like to see Beltrop as a pirate character added to the game would be neat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Only guessing as I don't have "Sea Dogs' and have never seen the characters.

He might have used the individual parts and just cut and pasted them into tha existing POTC texture.
Using layers, one can then chance the size & shape of these parts to better match the POTC gm model.

Another way is to just rework the POTC texture to match the SD character, comparing it to screen shots.
This I imagine would be harder and require more artistic talent.

Got any screen shots and SD textures of this Beltrop character?

I'd be intreasted in seeing a Sea Dogs TC <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Don't have a viewer like GM viewer so I will start a game and get a screenie,he's one nasty dude in SeaDogs

Skull,
Wouldn't Catalina have a line on this? I thought she used the Sea Dog file for Maurikio Camentata ( Not sure that's how you spell that....) to make Fred Bob. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I'm fairly certain that Nathan used the French officer model as you say above, and that he altered the French officer TGA file with the Sea Dogs files. I've had some fun experimenting with that myself. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Might have to load up the game again just to see if I can manipulate some files. I seem to recall the "Black" coat looking pretty sharp, maybe it would look good on Mings.

Here's Beltrop, kinda dark picture, on his way to a surprise party, his.
<a href="http://www.pcpointer.de/pics/seadogs/seadogs_big1.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.pcpointer.de/pics/seadogs/seadogs_big1.jpg</a>

Just found another, better, picture:

Aye SCM,Catalina did use SeaDogs textures as ye said as well as Nathan, 'ave ye had any luck with yer experiments ? models do look a lot better in POTC after their conversion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

mate. trust me. you need to buy sea dogs. it may be out dated to POTC. but WAY worth it with all the mods.

it's so much fun to miss. i think i still play sea dogs more then potc <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

again BUY IT, PLAY IT, LOVE IT.

anyone that remotely likes potc will love seadogs.

Aye H.A., it'd be game that got me started on pirate games <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Haven't had any luck getting onto the computer, it's being monopolised, so I have been indulging in XBox to get my fix.

I was trying earlier to afix some of the Voyage Century tga files, that Inez found, to POTC gm models with varying rates of success. It can take a bit more patience than I can often muster to get those pictures to look right. Hats off to Petros, Cat, Alan Smithee and Nathan, and others, who can make them look so good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

I'm trying to figure which POTC model is closest to Beltrop and I'm thinking a head swap might be needed unless we want to give him a hat.

I liked Sea Dogs, but until I found Scrogdog's "getting started" walkthru: <a href="http://www.highnotez.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=164#164" target="_blank">http://www.highnotez.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=164#164</a>
I found it pretty frustrating. (Or perhaps pretty and frustrating.) This frustration probably had a lot to do with me trying to chase down Galleons with my Pink. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

he he, sail'n a pink is definetly not me idear O' a sail'n ship te be sure <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> tuff gett'n anywhar on the map without gett'n sunk.I'd not mind take'n a crack at gett'n Beltrop in the game,don't know wahr te start,never mucked with textures before <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

and i know everyone here WILL!

Skull,
Loaded Sea Dogs and discovered the image files are in FT format, but thanks to Hosehead and Orzel, and all the other creative geniuses at Ellaybe Island, I got the FT convertor, and I'll see if I can get a look at the textures to see what I can do with them. I'm still trying to figure out who in POTC has a head that looks like Beltrop's and the closest I can find appears to be the Spanish Priest! I may use Inez' s tool to try a head swap with that head and Corsair1.gm to see what I get.

I may use your thread to post whatever progress I make as I fool around with this because I'm betting that if Petros, or some others see the way I operate they may be able to make some suggestions on easier ways to accomplish what I attempt, and save me and others from some headaches. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I'll be back! Someone get HellAngel_666 more rum! He deserves it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Once converted, could you put them on ftp?
Not that I have much time with the ships I'm reworking, but that way I can follow along.

Skull,
What do you know? I just happened to have a keg of vintage reserve Snakebite, brewed just last January, handy! Can't recall specifically how I acquired it, but there's probably no reason to go into details. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/8211.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Your initial suggestion reminded me of the time I was trying to hunt down the "missing mad monk" on Redmond Island, he sends his regards by the way, when you were able to convince him to get over his shyness and make an appearance in the game by manipulating the coding. The fun we had during that escapade convinced me that it might be fun to see what new mayhem we could conjure up by trying to accomplish this. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

Had some time at the computer this weekend and was able to see if I could add Beltrop to POTC. As I tinker with the model and TGA files I'll post whatever progress I make, hopefully to the end of a good looking model. I am not going to give directions about editing the files and what files are required because Catalina already wrote down an extremely comprehensive, (and extremely helpful) tutorial that you can be found here:
<a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=AddingSkinsToTailor&v=17ue" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...ToTailor&v=17ue</a>

My focus is going to be on transferring the textures of one model to another to create a new character that can be used as either a main character model or be hired as an officer. If I actually accomplish a decent looking model, I'm thinking that Beltrop might be a good candidate for replacing the Pirate Leader on Quebrada Costillas after the bald guy is either killed or captured in the story line of the game, similar to Nathan Kell's replacing the English Governor with the Brin model.

Petros, I'll see what I can do about getting the Beltrop TF files converted to TGA format files onto the FTP so they will be available there. I'll try to set it up so more Sea Dogs tga files can be added, there are some nice looking ones, but I'll start with Beltrop. If you can, I think you'd really like seeing the Voyage Century files that Inez found. The download is a tall order, and I haven't been able to successfully add a VC gm into POTC, but the tga files are awe inspiring. I'm a little surprised that Alan Smithee hasn't doubled the POTC population by converting VC tga files to POTC models by now.

To begin I determined upon getting Beltrop's coat onto the Corsair1.gm model and the Corsair1.tga.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809660.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

When I get a solid tga for this I'll post it, but my first effort turned out as follows:
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809661.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Here's a fore and aft view:
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809662.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

As you can see, the coat needs a little adjusting, but it's pretty good for a first try, and the file actually looks pretty good on a POTC model. Rather than just pasting the whole body tga into the corsair1.tga, I would have to cut out only the portions of the coat that I need rather than the whole image, (Like I did... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> ) and then use the transparency feature in photo shop to make sure that all of the features from the new image line up with the old one.

Also,
I tried using Inez's TOOL to see whether the Spanish Priest's head would work on the Corsair body, they don't always line up correctly, with the following results:
Corsair1 / Spanish Priest
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809789.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Corsair1 / Man2
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809790.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Corsair1 / Man6 (Vosey)
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809791.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Unfortunately the heads don't line up with the body well, they look like they are scrunching their shoulders, which might take away from Beltrop's imposing nature and effect.
In response to this, I'm thinking that the Searcher model might actually work out better overall, and I wouldn't necessarily need to do a head swap. I'll give it a try and see what I get.

Searcher
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809793.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

As those of you who haven't tried this, you can see that the process involves a lot of trial and error and should probably give everyone a greater appreciation for the quality and quantity of models (both human and ship) that the modders have made available in the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Finally, I fooled around a little with the Sea Dogs "Black Coat". I'm going to need to make a number of adjustments for this as Mings is looking like he's attending a Masonic ritual.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/809663.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Fortunately experimenting is half the fun. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Harrrr! SCM matey.I'd be bett'n ye been hang'n aroun' Catalina again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
Great work with textures,Silehard's look'n rather sharp, played with it on the weekend as well and it looked like a Dog's breakfast <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> I'd be check'n out Catalina's tutorial,but I'd be think'n tew 'ave better luck with code'n than textur'n <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

This is looking very nice indeed! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
BTW: Petros already made a replacement for the QC pirate leader, which is implemented in the Post Build 12 mods:
<img src="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/images/characters/boss1.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

However, now that there is also a new islands mod, we could add Beltrop as chief on Tortuga instead! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Fine look'n work Petros,didn't know that cause I'm still play'n an tinker'n older version build 12, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

Arrrr bringing back fond memories of ol Sea Dogs, atm it is still in my opinion the best pirate game out there.

Thats why im looking forward to AoP, alot of the ships look so much like they did in sea dogs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> the same kind of feel to them.

That captain looks so good, Petros, I'm going to eventually have to breakdown and follow Pieter's advice and load another version of POTC so I can check out the updates. I'd be loath to lose my Build 12 version, but this way I can have my cake and eat it too! Has anyone put a captain on the mysterious black ship that kidnaps children? See below to see why I ask.
Petros, also, I put the Beltrop tga's on the ftp, try saying that three times fast! I also set up a file for Sea Dog Ship tga's, but there is nothing in it at this point. Sea Dogs tf files are, unfortunately, not like POTC files, which are broken up between characters and ships, so I may add more of the files at a later date, but I have to go thru them first and break them up.

<i>Queen: More matter, with less art.
Polonius: Madam, I swear I use no art at all.
That he is mad, ’tis true; ’tis true ’tis pity;
And pity ’tis ’tis true: a foolish figure;
But farewell it, for I will use no art.</i>
<b>Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Act II, Sc. II</b>

Well, on to round two. I'll try to actually demonstrate more of what I'm doing so others like myself, but less willing to take the plunge on modifying tga files, will be encouraged to try it. Keep in mind that as long as you make backups of any files that you are attempting to edit, there's only a limited amount of damage you can do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

Not satisfied with the prospects yielded by the Corsair 1 model I determined to try the searcher model instead. I copied the searcher .gm model, renamed it Beltrop1.gm, hexedited the file so it points to the tx file, yet to be made, of Beltrop1.tx. I like this model because it looks close enough to the Sea Dogs Beltrop model, and I think I can get by without having to do a head swap. (And thereby avoid both work and complication... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" /> )

Here is the tga for the searcher model:
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/811227.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Slapping Beltrop's coat on the model yields what I feel is a promising result:
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/811217.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

I have to point out here that I had to lighten the pictures that I'm posting here. The models can be pretty dark in the game, and I'm thinking I may have to do some serious brightening to make an even darker Sea Dogs model look right in a POTC world. Also, I'm not working especially carefully at this point, this is basically cut and paste fast and loose because I don't want to put a lot of careful effort into something that I may not even use, I just want to see how it looks.

I'm also learning things as I go, you'll notice that in the second picture Beltrop's shirt collar is black. This is because the collar on the original tga is located in the area below where the belt would go (go figure..) and pasting the coat over the original coat covered it up. This is why I'm getting to like Sea Dogs, and also Voyage Century, tga's over POTC tga's; because they are often cut up into specific body areas, and it can be sometimes difficult on POTC tga's to identify what you are actually changing.

Encouraged by the results with the coat I decided to mess with Beltrop's head.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/811229.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
This serves as a sort of before/after picture for the tga file. Comparing this picture to the first one you can see where I have pasted the Beltrop tga's onto the searcher tga.

Here is the searcher tga with Beltrop's coat and head. Interestingly, both Sea Dogs and Voyage Century use half head and face tga's, where with POTC you get a complete face. It is a simple matter to copy the one side and flip it to get a complete face, but you have to be careful when you are lining up the eyes to make sure that they are in the right place or you'll cover the eyeholes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blink:" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/811226.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Look out Oxbay! Desmond Ray Beltrop is in the archipelago! <!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
(I used paintshop pro to darken the pants and smooth out the line down the middle of Beltrop's face. I also adjusted the color on his hands so it was closer to the color of his face.)

<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/811225.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
<!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->"Dang! that Snakebite is good stuff!"<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Looking at this I'm thinking that with the available POTC models this is about the best adjustment that I'm going to get, and so I may focus on fixing the details that will eventually finish the model. I'm not sure that this will create a model that anyone will want to use as a character model, but with his current undead pallor, he strikes me as a good figure to use as the captain of the dark ship that kidnaps children for the Animist cult. He might be a fun opponent to encounter if you try to take the black frigate after dealing with the head of the cult. Either that or this model could be used to replace the head of the cult, who knows? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
One of the things that I will definitely attempt is to lighten up his complexion to something closer to human, and also tailor the coat to make it fit the model better.
Let me know what you think!
