Sea Dogs combat

Just started playing this and get sunk by just about everyone. How do I know if Im more than a match for my opponent and visa versa?

Go for the small fish first.

Most of us will just look at a particular ship or convoy and toss a coin from there.

Really you just need to locate trading ships going it solo and build up your cash for better boats or experience to capture better ships.

there are some exceptions though. if you're an experienced seadog, anything goes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> just try to learn what ships can do what, mainly by using your spyglass and the shipyard interface. also, boarding is the key. it is, however, extremely tricky to learn. i take great pride in boarding other ships with minimal boarding skill, just because i like the surgical maneuvering that you need to do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> but first, concentrate on sinking enemies and dodging shot. that's hard enough. then, if an enemy is running away, try boarding. if you're lucky they might surrender first, making your job even easier.

blazer-glory, as Keith suggested, go for the small fish first and build up experience and loot small merchant vessels first. The best way to board yer prey is to sail around the lubbers and pepper them first with knipples(bar shot) to rip their sails to hell so they can't sail away, and then load your cannon with grape shot! That will take out the crew. The smaller the crew that is left, the easier your prize will be to board. The problem with that strategy though, is it puts you in close for their cannon to rip you to hell! Be sure to not approach yer prey broadsides! You should also wander over to the Other & Older pirate games section of the main forum, there is some great Sea Dogs info there! Good hunting mate!

Yep, boardin' is what its all about. Its fun to sink 'em, but then all the plunder be at the bottom of the sea. Seriously though, when you say Seadogs do you mean the AoPct SuperMod one, or did I miss something..?

Ive manage to upgrade to a Sloop but still not have much luck with combat yet, ship to ship AND hand to hand.

Aye mate takes some practice but you will get the hang of it. SeaDogs brings back a lot of fond memories, topnotch game for its time. Spent many enjoyable hours playing with HoseHeads Add on mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aye Skull, that it does mate! Hosehead did a fine job with that mod. If I recall correctly, I think it also fixed a couple of bugs. blazer, I would suggest that you finish the original game first before you install the addon. Keep at it mate, it's well worth taking the time and learning just how things work in Sea Dogs!
