Serious Modding Effort

A whole bunch of good, small modifications have been made for CoAS at this point,
but no serious effort has been made on either making a gameplay patch or a modpack combining everybody's work.
Having hany seperate mods is going to get confusing sooner or later, so getting this organised should be done before it gets too bad.

Additionally, since PotC, AoP and CoAS are so similar to begin with,
there is a lot of worthwhile modding information on the still-active PotC part of this forum.
There is also a lot of content in the freely available PotC Build mod that can serve as either inspiration
or source of new content for future modifications on CoAS.
As such, it would be worthwhile for people serious about modding CoAS to look into the PotC forums and possibly the game as well.

Pretty much all PotC Modders would be willing to help CoAS modders with their knowledge on the workings of this older game.
There is many similarities between the games indeed, so this knowledge can save you people from reinventing the wheel.
I would seriously encourage you to make use of this.

We actually have a <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?autocom=tracker" target="_blank">Bug Tracker</a> as part of this forum and would be very easy for us to add a "City of Abandoned Ships" project.
With that, people would be able to post bugs and fixes there, which can be put together into a future patch for the game.
If people are willing to work on this, I'll get the bug tracker set up for you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

The PotC Build Mod team has also discussed the idea of porting the Build Mod to CoAS. <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13287" target="_blank">See here</a>.
The final verdict is that we will finish Build 14 first and then we would be willing to try to port.
If you would want this to happen, you can help us by either getting to work on a port yourself or assisting us getting Build 14 finished.
After all, the sooner it's finished, the sooner we can all move over.

Once you get to work on putting together the mods, we can provide hosting for this work.
It would then also be a good move to create a profile on the <a href="http://www.moddb.com" target="_blank">ModDB</a>.
That site also provides hosting and is also a good way of generating publicity.

In short, make use of the resources available to you and do it as soon as possible! Get organized and get something done! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I'm already on it..

I love CoAS but hate that it lacks it's full potential, i want to see it expand so i have spent the last 3 days tring to make simply additions whilst i learn my way around it's source...

Now, i have just sucessfully ported the PoTC English Yacht and i am now sailing it in CoAS without problem, well excluding the low poly crew which is currently floating but i am working on it.

Indeed you've been doing some really good work from what I've seen the past couple of days.
In case you weren't aware of it, the PotC <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=11380" target="_blank">Tools, Tutorials and Information</a> thread contains a lot of useful information,
including on PotC vs. AoP/CoAS crew walk files.

If compared to what we've done to PotC, I would think that the full potential of CoAS is pretty much limitless.
My personal dream would be if we could take all good parts of CoAS, AoP, PotC and the PotC Build Mod,
AoP Supermod and various Russian mods and put them all together to become the best of them all.
Of course that would be a HUUUGE undertaking, for which we do not have enough people, but it's a noble goal. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I am not a modder but I do no how to convert salorpoints now and will help in getting the ships in if I can be of service. I just don't know how to upload the files due to the FTP being down and the forum not allowing me to add more then 500 or so K!

Show us that you're serious about modding and you'll be added to the "Modders" usergroup.
Then you can add 10 MB worth of attachments. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

This thread is meant for <i>coordinating an effort</i> of creating a modpack for CoAS. Ideas or help requests can be posted elsewhere.
I have moved CapnDan's request <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?s=&showtopic=13390&view=findpost&p=337287" target="_blank">here</a> and Edie's idea <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=14165" target="_blank">here</a>.

Then what am I doing in it? I only did two teeny weeny textures. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I've been slowly, SLOWLY editing the conversation files to be more piratey. So far I've made the smugglers sound like pirates and the whores sound more like whores. I even changed the 'shark' story so it doesn't sound so stupid and her reasons for turning you down make more sense. I've run into a few annoying limitations, however, like the madames in different factions using an identical 'woo' sequence, so beyond altering their greetings to have ethnic flavor they all end up sounding exactly the same.

I'm also willing to re-skin some of the models if people have requests (it's good practice).

Well if you finish them send them my way.. I'm putting together what i call "Age of Pirates 2 - CEP". CEP meaning Community Expansion Pack..

So far i have added some female playable characters, reimplemented the Secret Agent, Master and Inquisitor classes, ported the Yacht and Blackpearl into the game from PoTC. Aswell as tweaks found round the forum.

If so, you can either copy their dialog file and assign a different one for each nation,
or add some changes to the dialog.c file for nation-specific dialog options.
Maybe something like:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->switch(NPChar.nation)
{
    case ENGLAND:
        dialog.text = DLG_TEXT[12];
        link.l1 = DLG_TEXT[13];
    break;

    case FRANCE:
        dialog.text = DLG_TEXT[14];
        link.l1 = DLG_TEXT[15];
    break;

    case SPAIN:
        dialog.text = DLG_TEXT[16];
        link.l1 = DLG_TEXT[17];
    break;
}<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

It's the CoAS players and modders who should coordinate this effort, so it's also you people who should make such a to-do list.
And indeed that would be a good place to start. After you've decided exactly what the common aim should be, of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Hey Folks, I think Pieter is right. I couldn't be so active in the last few month, so know I don't have the slightest idea of all the modifikations or bugfix, which has already been done! It would be nice to have somekind of a complete List (maybe with downloadlinks) to combine them all to one patch, which could simply be filled with newer stuff.

Looks like we need a Cap'n to guide us all to a good port <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
Who's taking the job...

I say, you guys make a poll. And make a list of your wishes and you goals. To decide what kind of game you want to make of CoaS. Will it be an add-on which changes the gameplay and such, or will it only contain some graphical mods put together?

Kinda unoriginal, though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />

Your right we do need a to do list, but right now all i am doing is trying to port "Content" from the PoTC & it's Build 14 Mod so i can build up the CEP (Community Expansion Pack).

That being said i don't really know what need to be done, i just want to expand on CoAS content. I'll probably know more after i have ported as much content as possible and start to move onto more Code related tasks.

@Sordid - What do you suggest? A CEP is exactly what it is, it's straight to the point is it not? What would you have named it?

Maybe we should start by getting improvements to what exist, rather than adding new stuff, once we are happy with that, move on to creating original content...
I'm thinking that i can start remapping the textures on the original ships to get more detailed ones... wich is why i got here in te first place...

Sounds good mate, i'd like to see some nicer ship textures myself.

I hope any grand scale changes will be modular, so players can have as many options as possible when installing it. Maybe someone will only want the bug fixes and corrections, so that should definitely be separate. I realize it seems simple to go through the files and delete the ones you don't want, but not everyone will be that savvy. Just a thought.

Also, could we create a checklist at the top of the forums, sort of a "home base" which lists the projects and who is working on them? It could show the specific area being tackled and by which community members, and also an estimate of the progress toward completion. Rather than specifically assigning tasks, we can just list the things we'd like to see done and anyone who wishes may volunteer, adding their name to the project list. That should cut down on any redundancy, right?
