Setting up the torrent

Expert torrenters, I need some help here <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

With the help from Mr. Cooper, I've set up a torrent for the pre-build13 base pack. This is my first time dealing with torrents, so it is still not very clear to me. Can someone help me in setting it all up?

So far, i created a torrent file, uploaded it to <a href="http://www.mininova.org/sub/136" target="_blank">http://www.mininova.org/sub/136</a> (look for "prebuild13..."etc. there are 2 of them, my mistake, but they both should point to the same file).
I have BitComet running, the 300MB file in my Downloads folder, the tracker is <a href="http://tracker.phogotorrents.com:2006/announce" target="_blank">http://tracker.phogotorrents.com:2006/announce</a>

When i filter the files for "seed only", i see the file there allright. That probably makes me a valid seed. However, in <a href="http://www.mininova.org/sub/136" target="_blank">http://www.mininova.org/sub/136</a>, the ammount of seeds is shown as zero (or rather as -- ).

Am I doing something wrong? Or does it simply take days on end for me to register there as a seed?

I've set this up to help the community, and I'd really like it to work in the end. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I am going to try seeding for a bit as well. See what happens...

@Den Dee: you should see the torrent in your BitComet as well
as any traffic (seed) listed there.if not, try setting the download path to the original torent files on your hdd ( rigth click on the torrent display) , then he'll do hash check , he'll see that it is complete and he'll seed.
Never tried it , that only my logic.

Which torrent programs are worth using? I had heard from more than a few people that most torrent programs give you bad viruses...

Azureus works fine for me.

BTW: I tried seeding, but it wouldn't work. I downloaded the torrent, then I replaced the file-to-be-downloaded with the pre_b13_base.zip file on my HD. Then I started Azureus again, but the file tried downloading again instead of seeding, even though it was complete. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

If you've downloaded it already then you should let it started , that will do "seeding".
but if you downloaded already then someone is already <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> seeding it.
so it worked.I guess, the trick with replacing the file will work only fo the uploader as it must be exactly the same file the torrent was created for ( there are some hashes generated).
LE:
Whatever , I've set it up and it seems to work : <a href="http://www.mininova.org/tor/391340" target="_blank">http://www.mininova.org/tor/391340</a>
shows seeds "1" (me).I've tried it 2 times - the first one was a failure due to mininova wrong "infos for uploaders".

I hadn't downloaded it already. I never downloaded the file, because I made the file myself. It should be exactly the same as the one the torrent would try to download though. But Azureus won't even check the file to see if it is already completed.

We should do the same for all the files & explain people that they can choose the files that they want to download from a specific torent & as such download only the files they are intrested in.
Would someone try to download it so that we can see if it works for real ?

I am currently downloading the file from you so that I will also be able to seed the file. It seems that I HAVE to download the file first, even though I already have it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

@Den Dee the tracker they given you is wrong
instead of
<a href="http://tracker.phogotorrents.com:2006/announce" target="_blank">http://tracker.phogotorrents.com:2006/announce</a>
you must put
<a href="http://tracker.prq.to/announce" target="_blank">http://tracker.prq.to/announce</a>

that settles it, I'll go hunt some ships <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I will now be seeding these files as well when I'm online. I got it to work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Strangely enough, the tracker is still only showing one seeder while there are two now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

i guess it takes some time, or your client hasn't advertise enough because he had no requests , I realy don't know, however I'll be seeding it for a while(enough time to spread it).we still must set up all the pack(hopefully Den Dee has all the info he needs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ).

So: Should we make a torrent for every file? Or should we make one torrent containing all files in a folder so that people can choose which ones they want? We could even make a torrent of the unzipped files.

a torrent for all files unzipped (@ >10000 files) - i think that's too much & it will confuse people very much.the files mentioned on
<a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/" target="_blank">http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/</a> section Downloads
should be there in a single folder and the y will choose between zipped files. This way we'll avoid bugs reports due to
wrong installation of files. Also the torent must have an id in his name containing something like "update_pack_[date here]".
we'll have to repeat the opration with each [major?] update,i.e. recreate the torrent on mininova ( only takes 5 min.).

I am giving up my attempts at torrenting. You folks should continue if possible, I realise it is a good way to spread the content.

As for me: never been a torrent fan - never will be, it seems - so there.

I am sharing it on p2p, have my ICQ open at all times so that people can request it direct... think I am pulling my share of duty.

P.S. This is my first post after a few of days of absence. I am happy to report that after about 20 hours in hospital and another couple of days in bed, my kid is alive and kicking. So now I have some time to devote to the forums yet again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have updated my site now and there are now multiple mirrors for all files except the music downloads(1), so downloading them shouldn't be a problem anymore. And there should always be a fast mirror available. I dare say the files will, from now on, remain available, because there should always be at least one mirror that works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

(1) I will give the music downloads some mirrors too in couple of days. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

It should now not be nescessary anymore for the files to be available anywhere else, so we don't really need the Torrents anymore.

To Den Dee: This means that you won't need to keep sharing the files anymore. And if anyone messages you through ICQ, you can simply give him a link to my site. Should save you some trouble. But you are welcome to keep sharing and sending the files if you like. Anyway: Thanks for all your effort! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Congratulations on your kid. I'm very happy to hear that he's in order! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Yeah, the wence gave us one hell of a time... me and my wench are still recovering... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> that's her in the red bandana, you know...

Thanks for your concern <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I am dropping the p2p too then. I am keeping my ICQ, just for the folks who use it and need to find something out quickly.

@Den Dee - great to hear everithing it's fine.

I would do the torrent thing but I'm already concerned about
having my computer(my only one,my precious <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) uptime of ~5 days(i.e. without shutdown).
I guess I will make a schedule like >16 h /day opened & ~2-3h
shutdown .sorry for that but I think it needs to be shuted down.
During the weekend I'll do the torent thing for all the files on
the "downloads" section.then it will spread by itself hopefully.
but that will be very confusing for many people in regard to different mod versions.

I don't think we really need the torrents anymore now that we have mutliple mirrors. Downloading from a HTML page is easier and faster than using a torrent, right? Depending, of course, on the server, but we now have several servers for the same file. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
