Several small imperfections

Rad

Privateer
I found several small imperfections in the course of playing.
1. I sail at my MOW and when I try to shoot from the bow chasing cannons, no shoot is done only on the compas appears as those cannons shot and reloading will proceed. And this cannons on the bow would be really useful because these ships are quite slow and slowering any chased ships is good in this case and will be amusing too.

2. When I was at Conceicao´s smugglers lair and searched for Rheims there stood two guards in front of his house. I wanted to talk to them and some dialog windows appeared but they were completely blank. And the same happened when I found Rheims diary inside the house and before I was invaded by two men they tried to talk something and again coversation window appeared but it was blank again.

3. As I can remeber this bug or imperfection is in game for very long time . When I use the ability of fast turn of the ship she turns almost by 360 degress and not by 180 degress as it is supposed to be so as the ship could shoot from opposite side. I tried it several times and I always finished almost in the same position as I was before this fast turn. Could someone reduce this turn to about 180 degrees?

4. After boarding of surrendered ships there is a sentence in dialog with conquered captain. "I have time to decide your fate. However, I´d like to get 0 gold from your trunk."
There were always offered some money for getting from the trunk but for a quite long time there aren´t offered any. It impresses very strangely and unconvincingly. Do you know anybody why there aren´t offered any money anymore regularly ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

1. Not sure why that happens. Maybe the model file is missing the bow chasing cannon locators? Could you tell exactly which Manowar this occurs with? Does it happen with other Manowars as well?

2. Does that stop the game from continuing? Please enable <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5424" target="_blank">error logging</a>, then load the game at the point where this occurred. Once the errors occured, close the game again and show error.log, system.log and compile.log here. Perhaps that will give a clue about what's wrong.

3. I think it has always been like that, even in the stock unmodded game. I don't know if that can be fixed at all. It might be hardcoded. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

4. That is a known bug. It happens because there can't be more than 36 captured captains in the game. Every time you capture a ship, a new captured captain is generated. However, these captains are never removed again. Which means that after a while, you will go over the limit of 36 after which this bug will occur. A fix for this has been made by IncredibleHat and Mithrandir. This fix is in Build 13 Beta 2. Unfortunately, it apparently still doesn't work right. But that is probably a mistake of mine somewhere. I'll need to check it.

I have never seen that in any build/update I've used.
I haven't checked B13+Betas yet. (busy working on a new Caravel)

It may be related to the use of arcade sailing mode. How many of us use arcade sailing?

Hook

Pieter, I will try it at my second MOW I will tell you after some time. I use yellow decorated MOW.
What about absence of those trunk money concerns, I don´t want to occupy by that because it isn´t important for me. I wanted only to point out at it. And I regularly delete my older saves and as this problem arised a long time in my game I can´t find out anything about it more. The only think what I could do is I could send my last save or anythink else from my game to anybody from modders if some of them would want to look at it.
What about this fast turn concerns it worked good in the basic game as can remember. The ship really turned by 180 degree and was able in very short time to shoot broadside from the other site. But in the course of Nathan Kell modding something spoiled about it and from that time it worksthis way. And I turn and turn....and in the end I am practically in the same position as I start with my turning. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I am using arcade sailing because when I used "realistic saling" in this Build I couldn´t catch any ship even in case when I sailed faster then chased ship. And from that arised all my complaining about this issue as you can remember. So I switched off this realistic sailing and everything became OK again. I won´t be using it anymore in the future. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Rad, this realistic stuff is, well too realistic!
You can get old and gray playing it that way!
.....and I'm there allready!
I think playing it that way will save you a lot of
money because you don't have to buy another one
.....you never finish it!!? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

I am afraid Nosie I can´t understand exactly what you wanted to tell me this time. Maybe my English isn´t so good, maybe you mean something in your head but you write only part of it here, I don´t know. So, could you write here more detailed what do you mean exactly? If I could please, be patient with me. Maybe you could abandon even using quotations in some cases. I think it´s not necessary to use them every time. I hope I didn´t abuse you. I wouldn´t want to do that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> NO RAD i was just saying it takes a long time to finish the game
in realistic mode. I play arcade all the time and don't mind starting
a new one!! I've been playing this game for over 2 years now.
So that has to be some sort of record!!!
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I see Nosie now. And I prefer arcade mode too. You know I have played (tested) PoTC so many times when Nathan Kell was here yet that after some time I become somehow allergic already to play it only to some level and then to go to the another new or improved Build and start game anew. I did it for a very long time but in the end something exchange in me and I want to play it to the end at least now after quite long time. So, for that reason I was able to played out this game to the end I think only 4 times. In the absolute majority of cases I played it only partially and again and again.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> so I became tired by all that already. Anything shoud be done by taste and by free will and choice, don´t you think? In opposite case the joy from playing will disappear. Yesterday I even installed my old Sead Dogs so as remind myself this old great game. But this game is quite hard at least at the beginning. And what about your AoP? Did you try it? What do you think about it after several days? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

About the absence of trunk money: That is a known bug. A fix has already been made, but the fix is not in Beta 1. The fix is in Beta 2, but doesn't seem to work properly. If everything goes well, the fix will be working properly in Beta 3.

About fast turn: I've always had the ship turn about 270 degrees. I don't remember it ever being 180. I always play at arcade sailing, so that might have something to do with it. I am not aware of any changes being made to the relevant code.

About always starting a new game: The Build 13 mod is still in beta stage and all people playing Build 13 are essentially beta testers. Once Build 13 is done, it should be a stable version in which you can play the game to the end. But until that time most new updates will require a new game to be started because of major changes to the code in each update.

I know it Pieter and I do it usually this way too but just now I want to play it to the end because, as I said already, I didn´t do that for a very long time. And I think it´s good and important to know what happens in late stadiums of the game and not only at its earlier stadiums. Many things behave diferently at the beginning and at end of the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Quite hard at the begining? You musn't be playing with the patch! With the patch you can flee all fights on the main map. So to my mind it's way to easy. I remember when I used to be attacked sailing the principio on the non-patched game ... 'We've been attacked by three pirates ships!' shit... click on 'OK'... Damn!!! A frigat, a corvet, and a shvinia !!! Not AGAIN !

As I said it´quite hard ( at least harder than PoTC) but maybe without patch 1.06 it´s harder yet. But I never played it without patch and it isn´t my intention to play it without it becase there was some bugs without using this patch. And I believe you that game was even much harder yet without patch. Maybe it was one of the many reasons why this patch was released. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

You never played without patch? Good for you, because some bugs WERE tiresome. Impossible to complete the pirate destiny for exemple, because of a game crash after sinking the british ships near Dead Island. The crash had something to do with the fith nation 'america' that owned Highrock at that moment of the game... You have a similar crash if you try to add another nation ingame (of course, dump as I am I tried...)

Do you want to test the game without the option of always fleeing? I've found the file that was responsible of the enemies starting too far of you, and change it. I could send it to you. But don't do that if you're playing with Hosehead adds-on, 'cause the news ships will blast your little principio in one shot.

Sailing "realistic" gets adjusted in two places in this build.
The Game's Option Screen gives you arcade vs Realistic sailing. I always use realistic sailing.

In Buildsettings.h you have the "#define USE_REAL_SAILING" setting.

When it came out right after B12 (or perhaps it was part of B12) I tried it and noticed that the only one punished by realism was me! The AI get's to play it cool.
I could barely maneuver my ship while enemy sailed around me like the center of a carousel.

Well you know I gave that up fast, and have never looked back, so for me it's:

No! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> to #define USE_REAL_SAILING in Buildsettings.h and
Yes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> to "Realistic Sailing" in the Options screen.

Virtual sailor, thanks for your offer but if I would play it would do it the way I am used to. Possibility without escaping don´t attract me at all. And we spent hundres and hundreds hours with Hosehead in testing his Add-on but unfortunately there is cardinal bug in it that always appears after many hours of playing and game stop working completely. And nobody, Hose, Me, CCC or anybody else didn´t find out what cause it and we were so disappointed by that that we stop to play this Add-on at least for the time when anybody will be able to remove this bug. And I think nobody except Hose is able to do it. Anyway I probably won´t be any time to play Sea Dogs because there will be several games issued in the close future that I want to play so that I will be glad if I will have time for playing this new games. At least I proved myself Sead Dogs still works on my newer computer and under Win XP <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Petros, what changes if I would switch this arcade selling in game menu to realistic selling? I am not any fan of reality in that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

The big difference I see is in the effects of wind on sailing. In realistic sailing:

1. you never sail as fast as the wind blows.

2. you never sail directly into the wind.
In fact if your sails are unfurled and you are pointed into the wind, your ship actually goes backwards, even thou the speed indicator remains positive (a bug, it should be negative).

3. you have ships that are designed to sail close hauled, like the lugger, sloop, schooner, actually doing better close hauled than corvettes, frigates and galleons.

4. Best point of sailing is a reality and some ships sail fastest when the wind is from the side an to the rear, rather than directly aft of the ship.

5. Acceleration and deceleration are much more moderate, not like driving the race cars of arcade mode.

At first you will find sailing somewhat slow, but you realize that the AI ships are having the same challenge. Changing the ships course through a head wind will be frustrating until you get the feel for railing and lowering sails at the right time and also relying on momentum to get through the turns.
After a while it becomes fun. It will also give a deeper appreciation for all the ship types and their sailing characteristics.

I've tried realistic sailing many times, but never really took to it. It seems that all the AI ships end up facing the wind going nowhere like its a big parking lot. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I do scale down speed and turning on arcade though, sometimes your flying so fast you don't even have time to fire at passing ships!

That happens when it's just you and them and you're smart enough to keep up-wind so they can't overtake you.
For so interesting, sailing, I join the 2 fleet battles in open ocean. Never a dull moment there as the AI does better against itself.

Hmm, thats a good idea, I will have to try that. The realistic sailing always seemed really cool apart from the AI ships stupidity. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
