Ship editing/building

ok...i'm back from midterms... and i've just about had it with maya... i like the program but it definatly is a pain in the ass! i had my ship 3 quarters the way done and then maya decieded that it didn't like my save files and wouldn't save. and then eventually the program was terrminated. it sucks to, cause all i had to do was put locators on and add the cannons to it ( a simple copy and paste approach works well with maya) and then check to make sure the rigging and masts fit correctly. and i would have been done.

i think my problem was because of cross formatting or whatever tehy call it. the hull of the ship was obj and i was trying to save in a different format.

back to the drawing board for me though.

AH! THERE YOU ARE! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

And here's a suggestion for you to ease your pain what is in your ass: Think with your head not with your ass when using maya. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Since you know how to use Maya, could you possibly try to figure out how to export a properly working ship from Maya? It doesn't have to be a new ship. If you can take, for example, the Black Pearl, open it in Maya and save it to a usable file for the game, that could help us an incredible lot. Pretty please...? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I second it ..indeed Bassman7 could you do that? ..it would help our cool ships to get out of reversed lighting problem. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Exactly. Plus it might give Kazeite the final information he needs to make a ship in Maya as well. He's been trying for quite a while.

<a href="http://www.fraps.com/" target="_blank">Fraps</a> can indeed be used for taking fullscreen pics of whatever´s on the desktop. And unless you want to use the movie grapper thingy, its free! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

i have tried some moddeling too and GmViewer can convert .gm files into .obj files but how can i convert .obj files into .gm files? if thats inpossible you cant modify manowars, because they are to big for TOOL.

What do you mean by "too big for the TOOL"? I can open a Manowar just fine, then export to VRML without trouble. I think there are two ways of doing things:
1) Export to OBJ with GM Viewer, modify in Maya and export back to GM with the Maya plugin
2) Export to VRML with TOOL, modify in 3D Studio MAX and export back to GM with TOOL

Nobody here really knows how to use option #1, but option #2 causes the reversed lighting issue.

Meh? *farts* <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> ..s*** happens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />

Okay i'll put my 2 cents in maya and look how to export/import. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Thank you. I think Kazeite has got most of it figured out, except for a certain locator issue. Perhaps we should start a thread on the use of Maya for modifying ships so that we can all work together on this issue and share our knowledge and questions.

Indeed thats a right idea to do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

ow eh.. if i open a monowar with Tool it says: MoveUntransformedPoints: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index

an how do i export back with the Maya plugin?

I don't think this will work.
I don't see any way to import or export gm in Maya 5 with that plug-in.

I remember years ago, it was said that the plug-in only worked with Maya 4.5 and no other version.

Yep, and thus our present dilemma.

True. I heard that the Maya + Plugin from the FTP do work together; I think Kazeite has been experimenting with it, but I don't have enough knowledge on this at all. We need some info from the people who have been messing around with Maya lately, such as Kazeite and Heretik.

i wasnt talking about maya but Tool. i cant open any manowar with tool... but if you dont know i just stop editing monowars.

True, but this particular plugin is Maya 5 version. If you try to use Maya 4.5 plugins with Maya 5.0, it won't allow to load them, stating that they're obsolete.

To export ship to .gm format, you first need to enable plugins, then set entire scene properly, and then use <i>SD2GeoExport</i> format. The whole process is outlined <a href="http://forum.bestgamer.ru/showthread.php?t=984" target="_blank">in this particular thread</a> (which, unfortunately, is in russian, deals mostly with buildings, and isn't detailed enough anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> )

i've been messing around with it for a couple days, i've searched a couple sites on line that make reference to maya but i have no clue on the process of saving the files. after maya u end up trying to save a obj file into a ma or mb file (whatever they are i don't remember of the top of my head.) anyways i'm not finding any help on the support sites. i would think that we'd be able to take the file back the way we came when we started. meaning take the obj file back to gm viewer and then save as a gm file again. but the option isn't there so i don't know what to do.

<!--quoteo(post=218608:date=Oct 23 2007, 05:10 PM:name=bassman7)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bassman7 @ Oct 23 2007, 05:10 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->i don't know what to do.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Me neither.

If we kill ourselves (or at least break our necks) by doing it (doing the plugin able to make obj to gm)
then im going to do this: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ko" border="0" alt="ko.gif" />

blowing yourself up once is enough. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
