Ship of the Line

Sloopy

Landlubber
This new "Ship of the Line" is it going to be called "Ship of the Line" if it is can you seriously think up a more imaginative name, Ship of the Line looks out of place when listed with all the other ships, Sloop's, Brig's, Frigates, Sloop of War, Brig of War, War Galleon etc. Give it a cool name like "Man of War" (one of the best features of POTC was eventually getting your hands on one.) or Royal War Galleon but please don't call it "Ship of the Line"

The image that hits me with "Ship of the Line" is a rusty old bulk freighter shipping tennis shoes out of China. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

this is more of what I think of when I think of a "ship of the line"

Lets just hope the call it a "Battleship" and not a "Ship of the Line" which just doesn't sound right to me...

rumor has it will carry 48 guns...

Well, Sloopy, at least according to that Wikipedia article Toast referred to, "ship of the line" was the actual name for the types of ship it referred to. The battleship is a name that came later. I at least prefer a name that is historically more accurate than battleship...

Yeah, I prefer it to be called a ship of the line as well.

Hehe... I want to go watch Master and Commander all of the sudden!

Ah, I'd like to watch that movie again myself, but my Special Edition is back home in Finland and I will not get back to it until next August... :/

I got one of these when playing the beta of Pirates! - am hoping to get permission to post pics and stats here...

Any Betatesters should take a look at the Atari forum as I've posted links to pix... Just watch the NDA! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I saw the pics Cat - loved 'em! Can't wait to get one of me own <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

She is mighty fine, Cap'n Toast. I was SO SURPRISED to find out I had more men on my Brig and could actually capture her.

I hope Jeff allows me to post the pics, I want to get one showing the nice design of the figurehead... She's a pretty ship...

You are correct that "Ship of the line" is historically accurate, but then so is scurvy, eating rancid meat would be historically accurate for a pirates life.

Pirates is not a simulator and is designed around fun.

"Ship of the line = boring"
Man of War = exciting

The name "ship of the line" just doesn't do it for me, even though it is historically correct.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

dunno what to tell ya Sloop. Sorry you don't like the name I guess. To me, "Man of War" is a bit too generic. Ahhh.. no worries. I am sure that if they change it to something aside form Ship of the Line, I'll get over it. And if they don't, you'll get over it too. And once you play that game, I know you will! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

True once I get my hands on it , all will be forgotten...

How is the beta looking? , Are they on track to meet the Nov 16 deadline??? Less than a month to go, they will have to get a gold cut to the manufactures in around two weeks time if its going to be in stores in time <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The betatest is over, now. The version of Pirates! that we tested was immediately patched but patched only ONCE - and we tested a product that had a lot of the bugs already reported. So we were basically playing and reporting bugs that were pretty much taken care of already. I don't have the feeling that they're at all behind schedule, they kept saying, oh yeah, we've ironed that bug out already...

Aside from the bug reports, they were mainly interested in our reactions to the game, and whatever ideas or thoughts we might have. I think we did the most important work responding in the Betatester forum...

Don't ever thing they're not watching what's posted here, either - they have an eye on all the fansites - and they want to know our opinions and views... Believe me, they want to KNOW what we think! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

The version we tested was a complete game. From what they told us, there were plenty of additions to the version we had as well, so I am looking forward to being even more suprised when I get the final version. Can't wait!

I couldn´t think of a better name than Ship of the Line. I remember the many stories I´ve read about these giants and how they kicked ass back when Denmark was still a seafaring power to be reckoned with (well we still are but certainly not in the military sense).

Cat how about posting those pictures now? Maybe send them to Civ so he can add them to his article on the 'Ships of Pirates!" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" /> If I can find them! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I'll dig around... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Okay, here ya go:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/sd2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I was playing Adventurer level as a Count for the English, sailing a Brig with 177 men, and found this French SotL with only 75 men... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Sorry, I thought I had a better shot of her with her figurehead, it's nice, a lion, as I recall... She is NOT the biggest ship in the game, there is a merchant vessel that is 120 tons, I think... But I think this is the biggest warship. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Civrules, if you wish to use these for your article, you are welcome - but copy them and place them on your own server... Thanks! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Actually a Treasure Galleon of 140 ton is supposed to be the largest ship acording to this 'ere list:

<a href="http://www.cutlassisle.com/forwarder.html?http://www.cutlassisle.com/articles/ships/" target="_blank">http://www.cutlassisle.com/forwarder.html?...articles/ships/</a>

Nice pics Cat;-)

Hmm it's strange how the hull's all look the same but the sails are the only differences. To me that hull looks exactly the same as the frigate and galleon etc.

Shouldn't it have three levels of guns? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Yeah a ship of the line is supposed to have three decks with guns. Atleast that´s what they had back in the day....
