Slef-proclaimed silly question

Bill Bones

Landlubber
Well, it's a silly question.

I've noticed that Spanish ships in the game sport modern Spanish flags rather than the historical flag, and I was wondering...

- is that a stock game thing?
- is a mod?
- can they be changed for the true Spanish navy flag?

Here is the historical flag from 1690:

And this is the "plain" flag until 1785 (Borgogne cross on a white field)

Oooo, I like that flag from 1690, that looks like it would be fun to fly! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

It is possible to make and put new flags in the game. I don't know how to do it, but the British Flag and Nathaniel's peronal colors are not original.

I agree that Spanish flag is great. I would support an effort to make sure that all the flags are historically accurate to the 1690 -1700 period.

Can't remember what Spanish flag stock PotC used. But yours is certainly much more fitting for an Age of Sail game than the modern one.

I fear that fine details of the 1690 flag wouldn't really be visible ingame, so the "plain" one may be most suited.

isn't the spanish flag used now the same as the one in the stock game? it's the spanish flag from this time, by the way.

Meanwhile i prefer the 1690 flag. Tried it in the game (you have to change resource\textures\flagall.tga.tx for that) and it looks fine. And it has another advantage over the plain one: it contains the same colours (Yellow, white, red) as the stock/modern flag. So it will be easier for players to recognize the 1690 flag as Spanish.

You can download the new old flag from the PA FTP. Folder ccc, file FlagSpain1690.zip . Unzip that file into your PotC folder.

BTW, in the interfaces you will still see the stock modern flag. Don't think it's worth the effort to change that as well, eh?

well, they would know that the spanish fly that flag. otherwise they wont know that the new flag is that of the spanish. but maybe there's a different way for them to find out.

Hey, CCC, thanks for the new file! I just would need some more detailed instructions on how to download it ... like, where it is "PA fTP"... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

As for the flags, well, just was feeling weird to see the red-yellow-red flag along with the older-style flags of the other nations... the red-yellow-red flag was adopted in 1785 and sported a Navy crest until 1931, yet the older one, this time with a red borgogne cross on a yellow field, still was used as combat flag.

Of the flags I posted, the "ellaborate" one was the royal flag of Carlos II and was used during this king's rule, 1675-1700. Technically only ships serving king's duty (that is, Navy and other ships commisioned by the King) would use it whereas the older, plain flag would be used by everyone else. Ayway it's pretty cool and I'm going to put it in my POTC as soon as I find out how to download it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

you know, form a distance, the plain one looks like the flag of england. (note: ENGLAND, not great britain)

The detailed one looks very pretty. I wonder if I should add it to the Build 14 Alpha version. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

i think that you should, but the point is: which one? what i think you should try to do (which is prbably a bad idea, one of the reaons being that it's historically incorrect) is use the simple one as a flag, and the detailed one as an emblem for the sails.

or you could just use the detailed one for the flag of course.

I'm not going to mess around with emblemed sails; that is too much work to get right. CCC already did the flag, so the only thing I'll do is put that file into the Build 14 Alpha if people would like me to. I personally much prefer the detailed flag over the red cross one, so if I were to choose, I'd put the detailed one into the Build 14 Alpha. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I agree Pieter.

Thanks for the flag, it IS an improvement. The FTP server of Pirates Ahoy is the place to upload and exchange work-in-progress mods. The access details are in a sticky post "PotC FTP details". Though you need an FTP program...

The FTP doesn't work at the moment. Nor does my site. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
