I can see what they were going for, and it coulda been sweet, but this part of the game is @#$! annoying, and dull to boot. They should have either worked on it longer, or dumped it over the side. It looks very sweet, it's just that there's no GAME to this particular mini game.
C'mon, I'm the Dread Pirate Roberts, sacking and pillaging my way across the Carribean, but I'm helpless before a handful of pudgy town guards? You're 90% helpless, it's slow as molasass, and it all basically comes down to luck anyway.
I doubt that some of the obviously random configurations are even winnable. And besides, who wants to spend ten minutes of real life time fixing and drinking a cup of coffee while your guy is hiding behind a hay bale, waiting for `6-8` guards to sllloooowwllllyyyy shuffle away so you can continue?
I realize there should be some cost, penalty, or challenge to sneaking into a place where you're not wanted. How about this? Let me bribe someone, say a semi random range of 1 to 10k, depending on my notoriety and the size of the town. For example, getting into St. Augustine would be no big deal, but getting into Panama or something would cost huge.
I would GLADLY pay up, rather than suffer through endless repeats of this insipid mini game just to find out where Baron "evil spaniard fancypants" has sailed on to."
And that's another thing- in the old SMP, you might have caught up to those evil spaniards in a tavern here and there. Now, I ONLY find 'em on the high seas. Don't those guys ever stay put anymore?
