So frustrating....Layton Dexter quest

serpico17

Landlubber
what is the point of having a quest like finding the key that the Admiral lost in Layton Dexter quest when the latter is nearly impossible to find. It's two real days that I lost with no results. I know that the key is randomly placed and I know that most people who completed the quest had some difficulties so my question is: is the key noticeable to the naked eye? if not what method did you use to search for it? and third is the key placed exclusively to decks upper decks and bow of ships? Any help would be kindly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make a backup of the Key item models (3 of them, not sure what is fromt both of them):
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keygrand.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keymiddle.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keysimple.gm

Make 3 copies of blade1.gm and rename those copies as the 3 keys.
Enter the game and look for a sword on the floor
Once you get the Admiral´s key, save, exit and restore the backup of the 3 original key models.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Not very much FairPlay.... but on those frustrating moments this helps.

No, it is extremely small and nearly invisible on the blotchy wooden floors. I personally grew frustrated with it and cheated by replacing the key model files with that of a ladder. Much easier to notice a ladder standing upright all by itself than a tiny key.
Edit: Or a sword.

Tahlendorf did what you explained but for some reason it did not work or may be did not understand fully. I removed the three keys from the items file and replace them with a copy of blade1.gm renamed the 3 files as per instruction. In any case I will try again and let you know. Thanks any way.

If you didn´t find a sword on the floor, wich is 500 times easier than finding the key, then try Sordid´s strategy of putting the 3D of a ladder replacing the keys instead of a sword... in fact it will be the easiest way, a stand up ladder is something that catches your attention intantly.

Ok guys after three days of hell even with the nice advice given to me by Tahlendorf I did it. The only problem I was having, and the reason being that, may be, I had all the necessary keys in my inventory with the result that the little trick of Tah did not function I followed the instruction with a little correction. Instead of removing the 3 key files and replace them I renamed as follows:

RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keygrand_old.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keysimple_old.gm
RESOURCE\MODELS\Items\keymiddle_old.gm

I then followed the ınstructıon gıven to me by Thalendorf and all was fıne.I do not know why but I assumed that having all the keys in my inventory by simply removing and adding a sword or a ladder was not giving me results. In any case I am now able to carry on to the next difficult quest of getting the hell out of this place. Thanks kindly for your help.

Hopefully you have a savegame from close to when you first arrived. You only have 2 days to find the key!!! Then the admiral finds it. Nobody told me this, so I spent FOREVER, looking for a key that no longer existed. I'm also pretty sure that the 2 days starts from the moment you arrive, and not when you learn about the lost key. Therefore, talk to the people you need to talk to immediatly upon arrival before you do anything else.

I personally used the shipmap item file. Looks like a big white roll of paper. (I had to restart my game becuase I didn't have any early enough saves). When I spotted the shipmap, I saved my game and restored the key files. I wanted to see what it looked like as a key. I never would have found it. Its very small, same color as the wood, and blends in perfectly. Even when I knew it was there, I had a hard time seeing it.

Good luck!

You are wrong. Two days after writing the logbook. It is necessary to observe the "hand", not to try to see the key.

I suppose that is possible. I tried on day 5, immediatly after learning of the key and never found it, even with the dat swaps. Maybe I just got unlucky. Depending on where the key ends up, a large portion of the dat swapped item can end up under a barrel or inside of a wall.

Exactly, I left the keyhunt ofr days 6-8 because I preferred to do all the other sidequests and getting al the other keys to open the chests in the ships and collect its content to my chest in the Diffindur. So the keyhunt can be delayed to whenever you want, just control the rumour thingie. About the key, you´re totally right. The 2D/3D specialist should made better job on that, at least make it more metallic, with the shine of the blades of the swords that can be equipped... to find a key in reality the first thing that pop.up to your senses is the shine of the metal in refraction of light..... not a hand icon 2m above your head... same with jewels of the moneylenders... the textures must not be plain in this cases, and major chrome and specular map effects should be added on the materials used for texturing.

Is it really randomly generated? I recall someone in the forum mentioning that the key was found on the bow of Fury, and I got mine at the same spot too. I got it within an hour of the game time after receiving the quest.

Found it, too.
Finally - a few more minutes and I would have blown the whole place to kingdom come... <img src="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//style_emoticons/default/user_comment.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
And yes, it was indeed on the bow of the Fury...

Another one for your modding to-do list: make items easier to find. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

It appears to be random generated between some places, like if there´s a string of places the key can appear. The first one mention on this Forum was the bow of the Fury, if you found your key there is just coincidence, I found mine on the bow of the Eve, just before the ladder-passage to the Esmeralda.
If more people has found it at the same spots the theory of an array of possible locations for the key is getting stronger.

<b>BEST REGARDS</b>

The keys are probably generated on a random locator. You can probably set locators to be visible, so you can check.

turn on the locators from the debugger <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
