Somali Pirates Seize Up to Five More Ships in 48 Hours

Just when you thought it was safe to transport cargo again...   Funny that just a day after I post about how the war on piracy is being won, this pops up via the The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com).The pirates somehow eluded the armada of warships from more than a dozen nations, including the United States, patrolling Somalia’s seas. Kenyan seafarers are now talking about a “pirate surge.”“This hasn’t happened before,” said Andrew Mwangura, head of East African Seafarers’ Assistance Program (http://www.ecop.info/english/e-sap-net.htm) in Mombasa. “The pirates are taking the opportunity to be more aggressive. They are pushing more southeast. They are moving down. They are using this opportunity to do whatever they can.”Basically the article goes on about how the pirates are now moving further from the shore and capturing ships up to 400km off the coast.  This area, so far, has not been patrolled by the allied warships and the pirates are cleaning up.  Read it all HERE (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/world/africa/07pirates.html?ref=world)
