Starforce lawsuite

I read yesterday that Ubisoft is being sue for $5 million dollar in class action lawsuite, over Starforce. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />
Has anyone else here of this? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
Will this change release of AoP? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

Thats old news <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> and thats one of the reason Ubi dropped SF. Guess UbiSoft understand that by using StarForce they lose more customers than win pirates.

As for PlayLogic, they will learn that too but WE the community will lose cuz of their misstake.

What makes starforce an effective anti pirateing software, at the same time why is it so ineffective that it screws up people's systems?

What kind of protection system is it if it acts like malware/trojan and does nothing to stop the game from being played? There isn't one SF game that hasn't been run from a backup NOT EVEN ONE.

I really hope that Ubisoft is going to loose that lawsuit since SF is really annoying, had lots of trouble with it when i bought Silent Hunter III.

Had problems with silent Hunter 111and SF as well,now I don't,and I really enjoy playing this great game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I thought SH3 had Starforce, I see I was correct. I never had any problems with either of the two. Then again, my old pc only had a DVD drive, my new PC has a DVD and burner and a few months ago I had Singles2 and I think it had Starforce.....needless to say my drives seem to act funny once in a while, but maybe it's just me.

Oh how I hate SF ... You guys remember when Akella released a russian patch for POTC and it required SF? .... Sucksville. Some of us had issues and we couldn't do anything about it ... then the C programmers came and ...

Corporations are truly a funny set of blokes. First and foremost the concern is profits. That's the game of business. However, they see something as a problem to them, and only when it COULD affect profits do we see them do something. Copy protect everything, issue licenses, install software (cough - Sony - cough) ... All to protect their interest ... but do nothing to grant the consumers just cause of their OWN interest.

I'm waiting for when I technically don't OWN my CD's I merely "licensed" them. Or my house, my car, my intellectual thoughts before and after they leave my brain ... That's when we go backwards to "1984" right? ...

1984: I get an increasing number of offers of software to rent for a monthly fee for example and there are hardware and software (os) changes underway to support this type of stuff even better. Once you can't buy your licence anymore and have to pay a monthly tax ... ummm fee ... then it's really going to get bad.

If starforce is so bad and now cost companies much money why do company like playlogic still use?
Is some other kind can be used that is not so damaging?

yes it's real, since I have SF installed on my system, I have probs that my DVD-Rom can't sometimes read his own cd or dvd's. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I was looking at a copy of Silent Hunter III in a store the other day, and no where on the package was there any mention of Starforce on the box. They don't tell you that you're getting this when you buy the game? That was so disturbing that I stopped thinking about buying a copy of Pacific Operations, (I think that was the title) simply because it was released by the same company. At least on the cigarettes I buy there's a warning on the package, I didn't see anything about Starforce on either of the game boxes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

No, they don't have to tell you when you buy the game - "Shrinkwrap License" as it is referred to.

However, they DO have to mention before you click YES to install EXACTLY what they will be putting on your PC and what it will do. This is where Sony ran into problems with those ECD's they released in a trial market several months back. They basically installed a licensing spyware that if you tried to remove would f-up your machine.

They use the software because they think they no better, and the bottom line is not how good your product is, but how many units you can sell.

Wouldn't surprise me if someone breaks this one wide open upon its release as well, or manage to get it to work with Daemon Tools.

This whole thing makes me think about the RIAA and how their pitiful judgement towards consumers fueled music piracy to all new hights. They refused to get on the internet bandwagon, raise CD prices ... and they don't see how they screwed up ... tisk tisk ...

Yep it tells you about Starforce if you read the licence before installing, also on 3 rd page in manual,I read neither before installing SH3 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> Now I keep an updated list of games with SF protection <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Silent Hunter 3 has been broken wide open already. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The trick to avoiding Starforce is to install the game, but not run it. Get a copy of of the no-cd hack from various sources, then run the game without the CD. It turns out that when you actually run the game from the CD is when Starforce is installed.

I bought the game, installed and ran it and ended up with Starforce. Afterwards I had a number of system crashes. After some research, I found the method described above. Then I went and deleted all the dll files installed by Starforce. Since then my system has been stable. I was not a happy camper, considering this was a brand new computer and my first experience with Windows XP.

Silent Hunter 3 requires XP to run. It wouldn't surprise me if the game would run just fine on Windows ME, but Starforce needs XP.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> Aye matey,thats how I'd be play'n the game ,the only way te play it

Im also bemused as to why they use it, if its for software protection, well , it's failed like all other protection. A day after a release if you know where to go you can find a way around it, then the only people your protecting agains are they users who paid for it, funny system

You know whats really ironic? Pirated SF <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I hope not. Since they droped SF now (finally a publisher listening to their fans). I wish other companies would follow.

If AOP=SF, then I'm not buying it. Simple as that.
