Steam...Ironclad...

CSHM

Captain Sir Henry Morgan
GUI Developer
Storm Modder
I obviously haven't been around for awhile, so I wouldn't know what thoughts or ideas have been thrown around about these things.
After a quick search i didn't find much, some dead work from 2004, and some stuff from 2006, but nothing solid.

Steam and Ironclad. Not much really to say, but what are people's opinions? The old ones i could see were that they didn't fit with the PotC timeline, but now we've stretched that quiet far, i mean, we now have America for example.

Could be a pretty interesting addition to very late game. Being able to eventually get some steam, or even an ironclad. Could even be the extremely early ones, that were much more like ship of the lines and frigates.

Ironclads may be slightly OP, but extreme late game, if you were out being a pirate doing pirate things and attacked a ship (game then tells you its a warship flying the colours of France) and you discover your guns aren't doing much and your getting chased down by an ironclad, things could get pretty crazy. You would then put all available money into getting your own.

Don't know how possible steam would be, but being able to chase down your targets, without worrying about wind, would be sweet.

Btw, Might have a go at modelling an ironclad this weekend.

P.S. If anything doesn't make sense or is vague, it's cos i really need to go to bed now.

I thinkyou kinda missed Akella´s parallax to that lucifer-infested child in the Exorcist.
"Blue & Grey", I think it was called? Hehe not a big success and a mix of styles beyond my taste, but be sure to try it out. A least, it had steampowered ironclads.

Now that we have the Periods mod, steam-powered ships and iron-clads sounds very interesting indeed.
We can easily make it so that they appear only in the final period, just like the USA only appear in the last two periods.
So there won't be much anachronisms involved.

I'm just wondering how to make such a ship appear steam-powered. It appears that a ship MUST have a sail in order to be propelled in the game.
Somebody even tried to put a rowboat into the game and it wouldn't move unless they'd put a sail on her.
However, putting an <i>invisible</i> sail on there wouldn't be impossible at all,
and perhaps we can make the angle at which she can sail into the wind real small.

Actually, didn't most early steam-powered have masts and sails anyway?
We could just make such a ship faster than she should be for sails alone and with a lot of hit points.

Anyway, it sounds interesting to me and it's certainly worth a try as as far I'm concerned. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

steam powered ships only had masts and sails because of the early unreliability of the engines. if there would be a ship powered by sail and steam in the game, the steam should make up most of the driving force. however, what might be a good idea is this:

battle sails furls all sail. steam power only. the other half of the sails or more would be invisible. maybe the invisible sails should be placed more or less around the area of the engine to symbolise engine damage when hit, IF you can hit invisible sails.

on a sidenote, i'd just love to see a smokestack.

That sounds interesting. And I see no reason why you couldn't hit invisible sails if they're made invisible through textures.
I'd love to see a smoke stack too; no idea how to do it though. It IS possible to have smoke issuing from fires on the ships,
so maybe, just maybe, a smoke stack would be possible too.

So it seems quite possible then?
I'm going to have a go at making the CSS Virginia soon, for starters. Pretty nice boat.

Possible? Possibly. We'd have to do some experimenting.
"CSS Virginia" sounds interesting. That would be a rather different boat to what we've got in the game now.
Imagine if we forget to set her to "last period only"! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

that thing would be a floating tank. it's going to be so much fun. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> it should definately have more hp than any other ship. it's top speed shouldn't be that high though. look up some historical details on it. i'm sure it's top speed is listed somewhere.

17km/h for the win!!

9 knots is a little slow for some.

USS Merrimack (which the Virginia was built from) could do 12 knots and was steam and sail. Virginia has nothing to give an extra boost <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />.

Was a little busy today, ill start tomorrow, never made a boat before :p.

Edit: You know, if you wanted to start easier, the La Napoleon, could be a good ship to test out steam on. It also has sails, and was the first purpose built steam battleship and the first ever battleship to use a screw. 90 gun, ship of the line.

Btw, you thought how epic the HMS Warrior could be :p ? Might as well have a Star Destroyer, that thing went all out when it comes to all the fancy new tech it stuck together in one ship.

blue vs grey was ok, but i got stuck and there seems to be no cheats in the universe <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

CSS Whore? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

WT* is that supposed to be about, Deep One??? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

What program are you going to use to make the Virginia?

deepy thinks with his balls. get used to it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

9 knots is allright. it's basically a juggernaut-type ship (not the class, the association to the word). slow, but unstoppable. of course, in our case, the ship is stoppable, but you'll need one hell of a pounding to do it. i wonder how well it'll go against forts? it's armament isn't all that heavy. anyway, you'd basically have a situation where you'd have fragile speed and agility vs a near-unstoppable lumbering fort. bit of game balance. they both have an equal chance of winning, depending on situation. no wind, and the sailing ship is done for.

speaking of wind. it would effect the steam engine's power, while it shouldn't. any idea how to fix that?

What about CSS Married? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Anyways it would be cool to have steam powered ship-tanks in the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
