Stede Bonney Alias Captain Thomas had taken several prizes filled with, indigo, sugar, cotton, rum, provisions, clothing and money from Pinks, sloops, snows,etc. His sloop Revenge was renamed the Royal James following his new alias and after the taking of 13 prizes his sloop became leaky in which he robbed and ripped up a river Shallop to repair his sloop then sailed into Cape Fear River. Though it happend they stayed there too long for their safety for the loacal authorities heard of the corsair and they deployed 2 sloops: The Henry of 8 guns under command of William Rhet- Leader of the expedition, And The Sea Nymph of 8 guns- and 170 men between the two sloops. Also Charles Vane in the Ranger brigantine happend to be along the way causing Rhet to go after him losing him thenh returned to Cape Fear, where he found 3 pirate sloops The Royal James the Francis and the Fortune and 70 men. Bonnet ordered every single man onboard his sloop as he prepared to fight to the death,
in which he fired several broadsides at the Henry and fired all their small arms at the two sloops, soon Rhet's sloop the Henry ran aground and Bonnet's sloop too, leaving Bonnet completely defended at a good angle though leaving Rhet's crew exposed to their broadsidesand musket fire. Bonnet seeing Rhet's men cowering in fear tied a knot around the rope of his Jolly Roger- which was a challenge to board him, but the odds were not soon in his favor for Rhet's sloop was no longer aground and he boarded Bonnet who gave nol resistance at all. The battle went on for eight hours and soon Bonnet was hung.
