Strange... very strange issue

Xepolite

Landlubber
Hi folks!

My little brother is a PotC fan for a very long time now, recently he got a new computer;

Amd athlon XP 2100
Nvidia geforce 4 MX440
ECS K7s5a motherboard
512 Mb Sdram
Sound Blaster Live!

Running Windows XP Pro

Now, our problem is;

Some texts dont appear, like the text on buttons in the game menus and texts when speaking to a NPC. The strange thing is however, that not all the text disappears.

To fix this, we have tried the following;
- Reinstall PotC
- Update DirectX, Nvidia drivers, Motherboard drivers
- Installed Windows Service packs
- A `re-install` of Windows XP

Could someone help us with this annoying problem?

Thx in advance,

~~Xepolite~~

Yeah that computer really sucks. Can we trade? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Seriously, it sounds like a graphics card/settings/configuration/driver/compatibility issue. That's why I did away with XP. And believe it or not, they finally decided to do away with XP on every comp at work that had it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Hm, do you own a version for spain, french or german lanuage?
Did you(your brother) install any mod?

We have a English version of the game. The error occured without any mods, aswell with the Build 12 mod..

(real cool mod, as far as i could read things ^^ )

Please make sure, that in your engine.ini is written
tracefilesoff = 0

Then start the game and talk to someone who doesnt answers, close game and post error.log and system.log here, which should be located after this in your PotC mainfolder. (that are simple textfiles)

Ok... this is what the game came up with:

<b>System.Log:</b>

and btw... i really appreciate u guys are helping me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> [/b]

You can try to hit the "i"-key in game and post the logs again.

If it isnt work after hitting of that key i suggest to reinstall, but first build11 and in top of this build12.

Sorry, but the searchfunktion is mostly useless, so i cant search for similar problems and how the master solved the problem.
The only one i've fond this error in reinit.c on InitItems() was when someone changed the content of some files.

Do you have a localized version (even if in english language)? If so, try to set a function like Localversion = 1 in the buildsettings.c file. It´s right on top, one of the first functions in that file.

your nvidia drivers are too recent, download an older one at <a href="http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=10" target="_blank">http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=10</a> . Preferably one in the `50-series` range, or a low 60 series one. good luck

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Now, our problem is;

Some texts dont appear, like the text on buttons in the game menus and texts when speaking to a NPC. The strange thing is however, that not all the text disappears. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I just bought the game today and I am having the same problem.
Some, but not all, of the text is not visible in the textboxes; e.g. [Sailing Mode] is visible, but when pressed the two option buttons are visible, but the text in them is not! (i.e. [Realistic Mode] & [Arcade Mode])
Sliders are visible, but only the text above the first of the three soundsliders is visible.

Now, someone said:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->your nvidia drivers are too recent, download an older one at <a href="http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=10" target="_blank">http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=10</a> . And maybe that is the case, but I would like a second opinion on that. It just seems strange to my (technically inexpert) mind, that a problem of that nature, would lead to consistent, but inconsequent errors relating to text and not otherwise affecting graphics. (The rest of the game seems to be running aok, as far as I have looked).

I was wondering if it could be an error in the setup process on the disc?
I have the "Ubisoft Exclusive" discount disc and it has e.g. language options in the setup process, <i>and</i> the disc does not autorun on insertion. Could it be that they "sloppyed it up"?

At any rate. I have the older versions of the drivers on my harddisc. But I would rather not go back unless it is confirmed by someone else, that this might plausibly be the issue.

<b>AMD Athlon 1,33Ghz
512MB RAM
Windows XP Pro (SP2)
DirectX 9.0c
GeForce4 Ti 4600</b>

Any input would be much appreciated.

I guess that I am not that patient.
"He changed the display driver and he saw that it was good".

It works, apparently.

Yes, it does.
I reinstalled the game, which changed nothing.
I installed the build (13), which did not correct the problem.
Then at long last, I changed my drivers back to an older version (52.16), and that cleared up the problem like a charm.

Excellent. Glad to hear it's working now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Incidently, it also cleared up some texture problems I was having, when trying to play Severance: Blade of Darkness.
See; thats what you get from trying to make fancy 3d graphics. Planescape: Torment runs like a dream on my PC, regardsless of drivers, graphics card and directx version. It is all the fancy "look at me I am animated in really cool 3D" games that have all the problems.
I wager that 5 years from now it will take a lot of tinkering for anyone to run Oblivion without hickups, but Baldurs Gate will still run without incident.
Or maybe not; I just like to think so.
