stuck again

Yes, we were thinking approximativly the same thing : player could choose between some dates (= eras) at the begining of the game...
However, I don't really agree on how you describe the first era. That would be the installation of a strong Spanish power, in which you can serve Spain or be a corsair from another nation.
The other nations have not settled here yet, they don't have merchants or navies - just corsairs. On the opposite, Spaniards and Portugueses already have fleets. This means it's wouldn't be that easy for you, you would have to find place to re-supply your ship, etc. But there would be less ships on the sea, and a lot of desert or nearly desert island. If some disease mod is created for your crew and townpeople, the deathrate would be especially high in this era. There should be the oportunity to come back to Europe, or to install colonies otherwise the game wouldn't be very interesting. And of course, Akellani natives!

Goals possible in this era :
- to get rich, as a corsair
- to get rich and/or powerfull serving Spain - why not as a governor?
- special quest/ending : installing a French/Dutch Protestant colony somewhere
- special quest/ending : to capture the gold convoy as an English corsair
- special quest/ending : finding the Fountain of Youth !

The reason for me suggesting that game should be easy in the first era is to have a bit of an "easy" first era for first-time players. Then the game becomes progressively harder. At first the sea is basically the player's playground where the player can hyjack ships at his pleasure, then the other pirates come and you get competition between the pirates and the player and then the navy powers come in as well, making life particularly hard for the player. Having mainly Spanish in the first era would be a nice idea. As for your idea of nations coming to the Caribbean: It would be nice to somehow temporarily remove all settlements from the islands and to see that with the years, more and more settlements are created.

heck, i wasn't forced into piracy by silehard. i was a pirate already! i don't think the fort's commander liked the gov's decision of betraying me though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> those repairs will sure take a long time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

how's that supposed to be done? replacing the town locations by jungle locations for that difficulty? i think that wou,d be the easiest option. far easier than making an entirely new archipelago for each era.

Exactly. Just have the towns be replaced by jungles until the settlement is founded.

This sounds quite ambitious but it would add a whole new dimension to the game.

You are very much right. If we could so it, it'd be awesome though. But it is a lot of work and with our current manpower it might not get done.
