sword fights on swashbuckler...

dafan

Landlubber
umm... well i'm new to this forum so i hope this isnt question that has been asked 100 times or even if it has, just bear w me this time.

this is the deal, after playing 30 mins on journeyman i went directly to rogue. i had an easy time on rogue and finished it without ever dividing the money until i retired. thing is i always thought swordfights were too easy on rogue. so i went on swashbuckler (whatever the spelling) and then i get into trouble in swordfights. i beat most of trade ship captains (i should beat em all though) and lose 95% of all fights w military captains or pirates, hell even the tavern molester. i tried playing defensively and offensively but the opponent always does the rope or back swings and ducks and jumps and then i die. there was even a time when he did all that consecutively without me hitting him ONCE.

i dont wanna go back to rogue since its too easy but i cant keep up in swordfights in swashbuckler. i need some help with swordfighting. any tips?

blast the ships with chain and grape until they surrender. do this until you have collected some items to help you with the dueling.

You can trick him by pressing another key quickly i.e. you press 7 and then
pressing 1 making him think you're gonna hit him high he have done one
of his fancy moves but on his return you hit him low instead.

I always hated that backjump your opponent does, it really throws you off and it's hard to counter with a block or time it so you can catch him. Try picking up the items like the bucket or the scythe (what is a scythe doing on board a ship, is there another name for this tool/weapon?) to throw at him.

Grape shot his boat to death, wait for alot of smoke to come out then board, I normally get a 3/1 ratio that way.

I know that game difficulty balance was something that we worked on in beta a whole bunch. And honestly, swashbuckler was always WAY too hard for me so I could never give much feedback on it - aside from the fact that it was too hard for me. Some people play only on Swashbuckler level... I dunno how you guys do it. I'd rather have a root canal!

I won quite a lot of fights on swashbuckler - I played with a defensive strategy. Dunno how I did it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Sword duels in swashbuckler mode..... uah! No way! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I guess canon skill is the best option you can have.... Shoot them until they surrender and everything is yours.

learn to jump and duck better and make sure you come out of each with a stab, not a low or high strike. The AI just dodges all the high and low strikes automatically and stabs you. Your best bet is to react to your opponent's moves, not trying to attack him directly. I know it sounds obvious, but still, ive found that if you are agressive on swashbuckler and you dont have pistols, armor, or perfectly balanced blades, your going to lose most of the time. Even with fencing skill taken.

Just sit back and learn the art of the quick dodge and striking before your feet have touched the deck again. You should already be stabbing forward before your character has even finished his duck or jump.

hey guys, thnx for the tips. they really did help me out. i tried the combo thing while playing defensively and it seems to work better although i still hate the taunts. anyways, thnx again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I've found the swordfighting is in essence very similar to the dancing, once you can pick their move early enough you can hit the right block or dodge early enough then you counter. If you jump early the moment hes half way through you can push stab and it thumps your feet down to the ground allowing you to jab in quickly. Likewise with ducking if you duck early enough and he swings over, you can be starting your own massive underswing before hes got his balance back. If hes prodding at you repetitvely, make sure you block and dodge long enough to have the advantage bar on your side before you launch your attack/his head has spiny dazed lines over it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Other than that, try to get your defensive move pushed as early as possible to initiate your own stylish defensive maneouvers. My swordfighting benefitted greatly by playing the level before the last one and on any fight I didnt have to worry about my crew dropping really playing with my opponent <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Do the options for defense and jumping not become available until Swashbuckle level? Is their a way to improve you fencing skills besides buying the items and practice?

i see one try it hard like me

i can tell you first you have to attack only not military ships
because you have less crewmen and less cannons

its right you can bomb his ship till he have np crew anymore
but seafight also much harder then in easy levels
so you always have to decide what you do to get money
best ways is to talk to the barmaid she tells you wich
cargo ship have lots of money thats for first enought and
always buy the tresure map but you have to know there
is no big town on it there are only the small one wich you dont
have on your map at the beginning
if you take this way you can survive
also dance with goveners daughter she give you positions
of mad men wich you can fight
if you win you get a lot of money but always save bevore fight
these guys also very hard in fencing
with time you get the better balanced swords and the better
fencing shirts if you have these tools you can fight against better
capitains or pirates
so enjoy the hard life of a swashbukkler and give you best
you will get 50% from all the money you can save so you get a
lot of points in history list

My Opinions on Swashbuckler Level:

- Its not as HARD as it seems since they just do things a litle faster and also employes feinting.

- Defensive fighting is the key, let him try to hit you, and dodge 2 to 3 seconds after he makes his move.

- Taunt him when you duck or jump to avoid incoming attack (especially rapier), DO NOT TAUNT him on a Thrust, he'll simply thrust you back and hit you when you taunt. Instead if he thrust and you out thrust him, hit him with thrust or slash or something you know is quick to hit him back

- Feints work well, and when you put him at a disadvantage, his reaction to your feint is really weak.

- Try fighting fiance at an old age, my tactics wont work here, dont know why :p, maybe there is a bug, I dont know.

But othre than that, it wont be so hard, its about timing and practice, reload if necessary.

Also crew sort of counts here since its dependant on advantage, but I defeated Montalban 300 crew with a 100 crew pretty easy since I kept taunting and made sure he was always disadvantage.

NOTE: If the guy hits you AND puts you at a disadvantage AND if your poor health, you lose, you are too slow even if you know what he is doing. You need to get the upper hand at the start.

I don't think it is a scythe. I think it is supposed to be a gaff hook. A ship tool used to pull fish and other things out of the water.

am i missing something? The only options I have when fighting is slash, thrust and the overhand chop (cant remember but its the 7 key). All the otherr ones like parry, jump etc. are X'd out. help?

You are correct, I sent her a link and a picture referring to a "boat hook". It puzzled me for a while also, until I realized, DOH! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yep, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> DOH! is the correct term! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

You mean you're not able to do these moves if you hit the keys? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

They're not Xed out because you can't use them, they're Xed out versions of the picture of the attacks. If a horizontal sword represents the thrust (4) then the parry for that (5) is a horizontal sword with an X through it as if to depict it being the opposite of 4.
