<b>Try using Radlinker to lower your Core and Memory speeds. This has stopped the crashing for me.
I noticed that everytime there was a crash, the VPU protector was kicking in and reseting the display unit. Something in Pirates! was giving a sudden burst of heat to the chip (this could be incorrect textures/TnL related loading during a particular sequence etc, i.e. the fight scene/land battles, or it could just be my card that is overheating, however I've never had any problems with my card in other games).
Radlinker is included with the Omega drivers, or you can download it independently of Omega.</b>

Now this has worked for me, I had to lower the the Core & Memory speed by over 50Hz. The game doesn't really suffer from slow downs when the video card is running 'underclocked' which is backed up by all the people running the game on lower spec' systems.
As I said, this has worked for me. It's not a real fix, only the patch will solve that, but at least it's a temporary workaround. If you're having problems with ATi Radeons and Pirates! then try it. What have you got to lose? It'll either work or it wont for you. It doesn't solve the flickering video/FSAA issue however, just the random crashes.
