THATS IT I GIVE UP!

Cap'n Cornish

Landlubber
I've just about taken all I can of my modifying attempts, I had all my new guns working by reinitialsing on a save game to test them, i then delete that and try starting a new game and it just gives me a blank bloody screen then when i press i to reinitialise it dumps out on me.

So i copied a save file from another potc folder and it loads the game but then when i press i it dumps out again ARGH! and I've not changed nothing from how i modified it all before and followed the rules why the hell is this?

ARGH!

Cap'n Cornish,

We ran into something similar to what you're experiencing while we were trying to put things together for the Devil's Island mod. If you tried to start a nwew game with the changed files you would get a blank screen. A new game had started, if you hit F1 or F2, you would get the various game screens, but you couldn't play the game. If you try this and get the same result, then it seems likely to be the same problem.

I think that Screwface was able to get around this by setting up a separate reinit file for the mod with coding in the Reinit C file directing the game to apply the new files.

You may want to read this thread, or see if Screwface comes along and maybe he can give you some ideas about this.

So we're his support group (Modders Anonymous) and we're here to help him over the rough spots.

Stick to the code, pirates! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> And have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

Awww thanx guys your great *picks his hair up from desk and glues it back on (a make shift wig whilst it grows back)*

I am gonna see how to get around it if someone has had this before so I need to turn on error loggin how is this done?

And I'll try pressing the buttons when it fires up and also check the forum thread I need to test these new weapons before i post the edits for ye all to try em.

Who would like to be my Beta testers for these before I release em to the world if i can get em to work that is.

Your right It is the same prob I trawled through that thread but being (as the thread mentions), a half arse code understander I didn't really understand what it was going on about other than that it needs some editing done to the reinit.c file.

Can someone help me with this please.

To turn error logging on:

You can either open Scheffnow's POTCModHelper (in POTC foldertools) and turn on error logging and then run POTC, or you open POTC Folderengine.ini and change it so tracefilesoff = 0
And then run POTC.

Then, post the contents of error.log and the last, oh, 20 lines of compile.log.

Okies I used the Scheffnow program and heres what it said...

Any ideas I don't?

Also, cap'n, what text editor do you use? I had to abandon Wordpad, for instance, since Cat says it inserts invisible characters that wreck your game. Something totally `lo-fi` like Notepad might work better, cleaner.

BOOM happened to mee when I was messing around with graphics by hand and misspeklled a file name... either the one you put down is wrong or it doesn't exist, if you're playing around with the statistics try using old gun skins, if you're going for the textures and such make sure it's in hte right folder (where the other guns are) hope that helps... if not... than <|/#*_" I "_*#|/> have no other advice for you, but others may...

For some reason my notepad decided to delete its self from existance on my pc ne ideas where i cn get it? as i have been using wordpad but i dont fink that is my prob.

Nathan where do the three log files live?

then i will send em to you.

Cap'n Cornish, Wordpad<span style='`font-size`:30pt;`line-height`:100%'><b><i>IS</i></b></span> the source of your problems!!!!!!!!!!!!

You cannot edit code in Wordpad. It puts in formatting you do not see when you are editing, even if you save in plain text format. It's probably causing most if not all of your troubles.

Notepad can be gotten back into your system if you go into Windows Setup and select it for reinstallation. You may need your Windows installation CD to put it back if the files have been corrupted, tho...

It may just be that the shortcut got deleted and you'll be just fine copying it out from your hard drive, tho.

Try that first. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Or, even better, get some sort of code editor (aka IDE). That will help immeasurably (I don't know how I survived when I used notepad...not syntax highlighting, no linking, no...)

The three logs are the *.log files in the main POTC folder that are generated when you start POTC in `error-logging` mode.
(Note that only System.log is assuredly generated; compile.log is only there if the script runs any trace() statements, and error.log is there only if there are script compile errors).

yep. i don't often use modhelper because it gives me an error message whenever i exit the game saying the some date information is invalid. i do use it when i want to start off somewhere except the tutorial deck though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

where would i obtain a code editor then?

and wordpad argh i hate it will kill it!

so if i copy my cannons stuff into note pad take out the editing bollocks and write it how it should look i shouldn't have probs yeah?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Theoretically, anyhow. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> There's no guarantee... But most likely, yes.

I use UltraEdit - <a href="http://www.ultraedit.com/" target="_blank">http://www.ultraedit.com/</a> - and I love it... The thing I think I appreciate about it more than anything is the `multi-file` SEARCH function. When I want to find something, I search `multi-files` and it gives me a report detailed enough so that I can find the correct context of the code I need FAST...

It's great... Free download, trial, and IMHO worth every penny of the money I spent to register it. Been using it daily for YEARS... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

If you don't want to eventually pay for an editor, you can go with Notepad2--<a href="http://www.`flos-freeware`.ch/notepad2.html" target="_blank">http://www.`flos-freeware`.ch/notepad2.html</a>. I've been using it ever since CrimsonEditor started doing weird things to my POTC files. It replaces Notepad quite nicely, and while it doesn't have some of the extra features of UltraEdit (like the `multi-file` searching that Cat mentioned), I've been very happy with it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
