THE BEST VERSION OF PIRATES! WAS...

`C-64` rocks

I had to load the original game into my `C-64` from a tape (yes you youngsters, some really old farts used a tape recorder) It took ages to load. It was always an exciting trip, never knowing that by the end of side 2 of the tape the `C-64` would crash or not.
I also played Gunship, Airborne assault and that submarine game. I never forgave myself throwing it all away. :-(

I only played the Nintendo version and Pirates! Gold. In the Nintendo version you had to use a paper map and the Astrolabe for finding the position, but as far as I recall, the graphics were different from those of the Amiga or pc version.

I kinda miss that aspect, using an actual map to pinpoint your current location. The original Amiga version was great looking, the NES version (assuming that's the one you're talking about) is more like the C64 version. Pirates! Gold on the Amiga CD32 were cartoonish, like the Megadrive version. Pirates! Gold on the PC were more like the ordinary amiga-version - the version that I consider the absolute best.

Tough to say. I played the game on C-64 and Amiga 500/1200, but I think I was most hooked with the C-64 version. My Amiga, especially 1200, for which the game had not been designed, crashed way too often to make the game a pleasurable experience.

But as far as the best version goes, it would prolly be the Amiga version.

@JaMes®: You are not the only old fart here. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I remember well the old frustration of the C-64 tape drive and how you had to use the screwdriver to align the reading head (don't know the technical term in English) separately for almost every game tape that you used.

ARGH; even a hard head like myself, broke down and got a floppy drive for the ol' 64. As I recall they was a cupla hundred bucks.

An AMIGA!? I thought I was the only one to have an Amiga. Have never ever met anybody that had an Amiga . And yes , that was a great Pirates version....And there wasnt any damn dancing. Say, howcome theres fencing practice in the game, but no dancing practice. Youd think on of those barmaids would help out a young feller and show him some
steps.

Well, I did get the floppy drive eventually, but I fumbled with the tape drive for some time... I was only 12 at the time (it was in -85) and the money had to come from my parents... And they were more expensive in Finland, of course, like everything still is...

And, uh, the floppy drive was larger than the darn C-64 itself! How's that for retro!

There are a lot of old Amiga users/enthusiasts around... It just doesn't come up that often in these discussions...

Of course that drive was so overpriced; Commadore may even have sold it cheaper, so as to pull in more customers.

Say, were there many Vikings sailed out of Finland? Now, thats an idea for the next pirate game . Hmm, start from Scandavia and work through the Medaterranian.[and no Im not going search the dictionery for "Medaterrian".
