i forgot about one particular piece of hilarity we hadwhile going down the river on our raft:

DM "suddenly, your raft stops, as if by magic."

me: "stupid keel!" (we had, for some reason, fitted a keel somewhere along the way which did nothing at all)

DM: "..."

"okay, you see the corpses of fallen warriors, lying eerily in the water below you" (which all our party members had COMPLETELY failed to notice)

"a thick fog rises around your raft, and from it come two ghosts, blocking your path. they tell you

"HALT! we are the ancient guardians of the cave ahead, and you must get past us or prove yourself worthy otherwise to proceed! if not, woe upon your bones."

paladin: "okay. can you get out of our way?"

DM: "what? just like that?"

P: "yeah. lemme roll a die."

DM: "um, okay."

P: "i got an 18!"

DM: "but... oh, allright, they let you pass."

Fighter: "hang on a minute. our dawrf here could use some new armour since he lost it from them rustmonsters back there."

P: "yeah, i want some new armor. plenty down there."

DM: "what!? you can't do that! you'll get into a massive amount of trouble if you fail that one"

P: "17!"

DM: "...okay, okay, you get your armor from the ghosts. now move on before i drop rocks on your head."
