The game crashes when I try to start it

My version of Pirates! crashes when I try to start it. The safe mode doesn't work either. The cd winds up and then it "encounters an error and needs to close." Then I tried the no cd crack, and that didn't work. I do not endorse it, but I hate when games that I buy don't work. I updated my nVidiaGeForce4 gfx drivers and my AC97 audio drivers but to no avail. My specs:

WinXP - Toshiba Satellite
512mb ddr ram
32 mb GeForce4 420go
AC97 audio card

I turned all background apps off including my virus scanner. I've read somewhere that you can play with the sound off, but how do I turn the sound off.

just an outside chance here, but is a 32mb graphics card enough for a direct x9 game?

I think possibly a 64mb card would be a minimum for dx9 requirements.

as i say. no definite statements, just a feeling.

I have exactly the same problem <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> my specs are
Win Xp Pro service pack 2
512mb DDR ram
128mb Geforce 4 Ti x8 AGP
Soundblaster Audigy 2
1.6 intell cpu

All drivers updated, all xtra applications off.. i mean this machine chews on dawn of war and battle for middle earth and doom 3.. but cant run pirates ??

I find it ... <i>interesting</i> that both of us are using Nvidia based cards, the main rival to ATI (who's advertising material is all through the game box) and that we cant run the game in such a spectacular way but we can run other high end, high standard games.

After paying good money for this game its a profoundly agrivating and dissapointing experience to have it refuse to run, definately not a happy customer here.

Anyhow, if you'll excuse my ranting <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> , If anyone can help us out id apreciate it, although i have a feeling patches will be required in our cases <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Aye mate,a few other mates be have'n probs wid GF4 4600 card as well
